(九) 15. Teaching Disillusionment

如是我聞: Thus I have heard:

一時,佛住舍衞國,祇樹,給孤獨園。 One time, the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Jeta’s Grove of Śrāvastī.

爾時,世尊告諸比丘: It was then that the Bhagavān addressed the monks,

「色無常。 “Form is impermanent.

無常即苦,苦即非我,非我者亦非我所。 What’s impermanent is painful, what’s painful is not self, and what’s not self doesn’t belong to self, either.

如是觀者名眞實正觀。 Such an observation is called a true and correct observation.

如是,受⋯想⋯行⋯識無常。 Thus, feeling … perception … volition … consciousness is impermanent.

無常即苦,苦即非我,非我者亦非我所。 What’s impermanent is painful, what’s painful is not self, and what’s not self doesn’t belong to self, either.

如是觀者名眞實正觀。 Such an observation is called a true and correct observation.

「聖弟子如是觀者厭於色。 “Noble disciples thus observe and become disillusioned with form.

厭受⋯想⋯行⋯識。 They become disillusioned with sensation … perception … volition … consciousness.

厭故不樂。 Because they’re disillusioned, they don’t enjoy it.

不樂故得解脱。 Because they don’t enjoy it, they attain liberation.

解脱者眞實智生: For someone who’s liberated, this true knowledge arises:

『我生已盡,梵行已立,所作已作。 ‘My births have been ended, the religious practice has been established, and the task has been accomplished.

自知不受後有。』」 I myself know that I won’t be subject to a later existence.’”

時,諸比丘聞佛所説歡喜,奉行。 When the monks who heard what the Buddha taught, they rejoiced and approved.
