(三五) 147. Three Gentlemen

如是我聞: Thus have I heard:

一時,佛住支提,竹園精舍。 One time, the Buddha was staying at the Bamboo Park Monastery in Cedi.

爾時,有三正士出家未久。 At the time, there were three upright gentlemen who had left home not long before.

所謂尊者阿㝹律陀,尊者難提,尊者金毘羅。 They were Venerable Aniruddha, Venerable Nandika, and Venerable Kimbila.

爾時,世尊知彼心中所念,而爲教誡: Knowing what they were thinking in their minds, the Bhagavān then instructed them:

「比丘,此心,此意,此識。 “Monks, this is mind, this is reasoning, this is consciousness.

當思惟此。 This should be contemplated.

莫思惟此。 Don’t contemplate that.

斷此欲、斷此色,身作證具足住。 Stopping this desire and stopping this form, a person fully abides in realization.

比丘,寧有色若常、不變、易正住,不?」 Monks, could there be form that’s permanent, unchanging, and a correct abode?”

比丘白佛: The monks said to the Buddha,

「不也,世尊。」 “No, Bhagavān.”

佛告比丘: The Buddha told the monks,

「善哉,善哉。 “Good, good!

色是無常、變易之法。 Form is impermanent and liable to change.

厭,離欲,滅,寂,沒。 Tiring of and parting with desire [for form], it ceases, become tranquil, and disappears.

如是,色從本以來一切無常、苦、變易法。 Thus, since the distant past, all forms have been impermanent, painful, and liable to change.

如是知已,縁彼色生諸漏害、熾然、憂惱。 Known in this way, the conditioning of those forms produces the contaminants, which are harmful, burning, and grievous.

皆悉斷滅。 Destroy them all.

斷滅已,無所著。 Once they are destroyed, there’s no attachment.

無所著已,安樂住 Once there’s no attachment, you’ll live in well-being.

安樂住已,得般涅槃。 Once you live in well-being, you’ll attain parinirvāṇa.

受、想、行、識亦復如是。」 Feelings, perceptions, volitions, and consciousness are likewise.”

佛説此經時,三正士不起諸漏,心得解脱。 When the Buddha spoke this sūtra, the contaminants didn’t arise in those three upright gentlemen, and their minds were liberated.

佛説此經已,諸比丘聞佛所説歡喜,奉行。 After the Buddha spoke this sūtra, the monks who heard what the Buddha taught rejoiced and approved.
