(一五六) 46-48.
如是我聞。 Thus have I heard:
一時佛住舍衞國祇樹給孤獨園。 One time, the Buddha stayed at Anāthapiṇḍada Park in Jeta Grove in Śrāvastī.
爾時世尊告諸比丘。 It was then that the Bhagavān addressed the monks,
何所有故。何所起。何所繋著。何所見我。令諸衆生作如是見如是説。 “What is it that exists, that arises, that ties, that’s an attachment, and that’s viewed as self and causes sentient beings to create such views and such statements?
諸衆生此世活。 ‘Sentient beings are alive in this world.
死後斷壞無所有。 After death, they are destroyed and become non-existent.
四大和合士夫。 The four elements combine to form a man.
身命終時。地歸地。水歸水。火歸火。風歸風。根隨空轉。 When his life ends, earth returns to earth, water returns to water, fire returns to fire, wind returns to wind, and his faculties turn into space.
輿床第五。四人持死人。往塜間。乃至 The bier bed being fifth, four people carry his dead body to the graveyard …
未燒可知。 he’s recognizable before he’s burned.
燒然已骨。白鴿色立。 After he’s burned, his bones are made white as a dove.
高慢者知施。黠慧者知受。 The conceited know generosity, and the intelligent know acceptance.
若説有者。彼一切虚誑妄説。 Those who say [its fruit] exists are all vain and speaking falsely.
若愚若智。死後他世。倶斷壞無所有。 Whether foolish or wise, in the other world after death, they are both destroyed and become non-existent.’”
諸比丘白佛。 The monks said to the Buddha,
“世尊是法根法眼法依。 “The Bhagavān is the Dharma root, the Dharma eye, and the Dharma refuge …”
如是廣説。次第如上三經 It’s thus explained in detail and in the sequence of the three sutras (35.7-9) above.
