(七二四) 21.
如是我聞。 Thus I have heard:
一時佛住舍衞國祇樹給孤獨園。 One time, the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada Park in Jeta Grove in Śrāvastī.
爾時世尊告諸比丘。 It was then that the Bhagavān addressed the monks,
若比丘持戒修徳慚愧。成眞實法。 “If a monk observes precepts and cultivates virtue, conscience, and modesty, he’ll achieve the true teaching.
見此人者。多得果報。 Seeing this person will often be fruitful.
若復聞者。若隨憶念者。隨出家者。多得功徳。 If he’s also heard, followed in memory, and followed into homelessness, it will often bring virtue.
況復親近恭敬奉事。 It’s even more so to associate with, honor, and serve him.
所以者何。 Why is that?
親近奉事如是人者。時時得聞深妙之法。 Associating with and serving such a person, a monk can hear the profound and subtle Dharma from time to time.
得聞深法已。成就二正。身正及心正。 After hearing the profound Dharma, he’ll achieve the two ways of being correct: correctness of body and correctness of mind.
方便修習定覺分。 He’ll skillfully cultivate the awakening factor of concentration.
修習已修習滿足。乃至 After cultivating it, he’ll cultivate its fulfillment …
捨覺分修習滿足。 he’ll cultivate the fulfillment of the awakening factor of equanimity.”
佛説此經已。諸比丘聞佛所説。歡喜奉行 After the Buddha taught this sutra, the monks who heard what he taught rejoiced and handed it down.
