雜阿含經 Related Discourses 14

(八一〇) 17.

如是我聞。 Thus I have heard:

一時佛住金剛跋求摩河側薩羅梨林中。 One time, the Buddha was staying at Vṛji on the bank of the [Vaggumudā] River in a cedar forest.

爾時尊者阿難獨一靜處。思惟禪思。 It was then that the Venerable Ānanda was alone in a quiet place, reflecting and meditating.

作如是念。 He had this thought,

頗有一法。修習多修習。令四法滿足。四法滿足已。七法滿足。七法滿足已。二法滿足。 “Could it be that there’s one thing that when cultivated and cultivated often will cause the fulfillment of four things, that will fulfill seven things after it fulfills those four things, and that will fulfill two things after it fulfills those seven things?”

時尊者阿難從禪覺已。往詣佛所。 Venerable Ānanda then roused from his meditation and went to the Buddha.

稽首禮足。退坐一面。白佛言。 He bowed his head at his feet, withdrew to sit at one side, and said to the Buddha,

世尊。我獨一靜處。思惟禪思。 “Bhagavān, I was alone in a quiet place, reflecting and meditating.

作是念。 I had this thought,

頗有一法。多修習已。令四法滿足。乃至二法滿足。 ‘Could it be that there’s one thing that when cultivated and cultivated often will cause the fulfillment of four things … and that will fulfill two things?’

我今問世尊。寧有一法。多修習已。能令乃至二法滿足耶。 Now, I’d like to ask the Bhagavān, is there one thing when cultivated often can cause … the fulfillment of two things?”

佛告阿難。 The Buddha told Ānanda,

有一法。多修習已。乃至能令二法滿足。 “There is one thing that when cultivated often … can cause the fulfillment of two things.

何等爲一法。 What’s that one thing?

謂安那般那念。 It’s mindfulness of breathing.

多修習已。能令四念處滿足。 When it’s cultivated often, it can cause the fulfillment of the four abodes of mindfulness.

四念處滿足已。七覺分滿足。 After fulfilling the four abodes of mindfulness, the seven factors of awakening are fulfilled.

七覺分滿足已。明解脱滿足。 After fulfilling the seven factors of awakening, insight and liberation are fulfilled.

云何修安那般那念。四念處滿足。 “How does cultivating mindfulness of breathing fulfill the four abodes of mindfulness?

是比丘。依止聚落。乃至如滅出息念學。 Suppose a monk depends on a village … mindfully trains according to cessation as he exhales.

阿難。如是聖弟子。入息念時如入息念學。 “Ānanda, when he’s mindful of inhaling, the noble disciple mindfully trains as he inhales.

出息念時如出息念學。 When he’s mindful of exhaling, he mindfully trains as he exhales.

若長若短一切身行覺知。 Whether it’s long or short, he perceives his whole body’s activity.

入息念時。如入息念學。 When he’s mindful of inhaling, he mindfully trains as he inhales.

出息念時如出息念學 When he’s mindful of exhaling, he mindfully trains as he exhales.

身行休息。入息念時如身行休息。入息念學。 When he’s mindful of his body’s activity calming as he inhales, he mindfully trains while the body’s activity calms as he inhales.

身行休息出息念時。如身行休息出息念學。 When he’s mindful of his body’s activity calming as he exhales, he mindfully trains while his body’s activity calms as he exhales.

聖弟子。爾時身身觀念住 At that point, the noble disciple is mindfully abiding in contemplation of body as body.

異於身者。彼亦如是。隨身比思惟。 Whatever body it is, he also thus reflects according to that body.

若有時聖弟子。喜覺知。 “If there are times the noble disciple perceives joy …

樂覺知。 perceives happiness …

心行覺知。 perceives his mind’s activity …

心行息覺知。入息念時如心行息入息念學。 perceives his mind’s activity calming, then when he’s mindful of inhaling, he mindfully trains while his mental activity calms as he inhales.

心行息出息念時。如心行息出息念學。 When he’s mindful of his mind’s activity calming as he exhales, he mindfully trains while his mind’s activity calms as he exhales.

是聖弟子。爾時受受觀念住。 At that point, the noble disciple is mindfully abiding in contemplation of feeling as feeling.

若復異受者。彼亦隨受比思惟。 Whatever feeling it is, he also reflects according to that feeling.

有時聖弟子。心覺知心悦 “If there are times the noble disciple perceives his mind and perceives his mind’s gladness …

心定 mind’s concentration …

心解脱覺知。入息念時。如入息念學。 mind’s liberation, then when he’s mindful of inhaling, he mindfully trains as he inhales.

心解脱出息念時。如心解脱出息念學。 When he’s mindful of his mind’s liberation as he exhales, he mindfully trains in the mind’s liberation as he exhales.

是聖弟子。爾時心心觀念住。 At that point, the noble disciple is mindfully abiding in contemplation of mind as mind.

若有異心者。彼亦隨心比思惟。 Whatever mind it is, he also reflects on it according to that mind.

若聖弟子有時觀無常 “If there are times when the noble disciple observes impermanence …

無欲 the lack of desire …

滅。如無常 cessation, then he trains in the observation of impermanence …

無欲 the lack of desire …

滅觀住學。 cessation.

是聖弟子。爾時法法觀念住。 At that point, the noble disciple is mindfully abiding in contemplation of principle as principle.

異於法者亦隨法比思惟。 Whatever principle it is, he also reflects on it according to that principle.

是名修安那般那念。滿足四念處。 This is called cultivating mindfulness of breathing and fulfilling the four abodes of mindfulness.”

阿難白佛。 Ānanda said to the Buddha,

如是修習安那般那念。令四念處滿足。 “Thus does mindfulness of breathing cause the fulfillment of the four abodes of mindfulness.

云何修四念處。令七覺分滿足。 How does cultivating the four abodes of mindfulness cause the fulfillment of the seven factors of awakening?”

佛告阿難。 The Buddha told Ānanda,

若比丘。身身觀念住念 “Suppose a monk mindfully abides in contemplation of body as body.

住已繋念住不忘。 After mindfully abiding, he fixes his attention and doesn’t lose it.

爾時方便。修念覺分。 At that point, this is the method of cultivating the awakening factor of mindfulness.

修念覺分已。念覺分滿足。 After cultivating the awakening factor of mindfulness, he fulfills the awakening factor of mindfulness.

念覺滿足已。於法選擇思量。 “After fulfilling the awakening factor of mindfulness, he discriminates and deliberates on qualities.

爾時方便。修擇法覺分。 At that point, this is the method of cultivating the awakening factor of discriminating qualities.

修擇法覺分已。擇法覺分滿足。 After cultivating the awakening factor of discriminating qualities, he fulfills the awakening factor of discriminating qualities.

於法選擇分別思量已。得精勤方便。 “After discriminating, discerning, and deliberating on qualities, he attains the method of diligence.

爾時方便。修習精進覺分。 At that point, this is the method of cultivating the awakening factor of effort.

修精進覺分已。精進覺分滿足。 After cultivating the awakening factor of effort, he fulfills the awakening factor of effort.

方便精進已則心歡喜。 “After the method of effort, then his mind is joyous.

爾時方便。修喜覺分。 At that point, this is the method of cultivating the awakening factor of joy.

修喜覺分已。喜覺分滿足。 After cultivating the awakening factor of joy, he fulfills the awakening factor of joy.

歡喜已。身心猗息。 “After rejoicing, he becomes calm in body and mind.

爾時方便修猗覺分。 At that point, this is the method of cultivating the awakening factor of peace.

修猗覺分已。猗覺分滿足。 After cultivating the awakening factor of peace, he fulfills the awakening factor of peace.

身心樂已。得三昧。 “After his body and mind are comfortable, he attains concentration.

爾時修定覺分。 At that point, this is the method of cultivating the awakening factor of concentration.

修定覺分已。定覺分滿足。 After cultivating the awakening factor of concentration, he fulfills the awakening factor of concentration.

定覺分滿足已。貪憂則滅。得平等捨。 “After fulfilling the awakening factor of concentration, his craving and sadness cease, and he attains the levelness of equanimity.

爾時方便。修捨覺分。 At that point, this is the method of cultivating the awakening factor of equanimity.

修捨覺分已。捨覺分滿足。 After cultivating the awakening factor of equanimity, he fulfills the awakening factor of equanimity.

受心法法念處。亦如是説。 The mindfulness of feeling … mind … principle as principle are likewise explained.

是名修四念處。滿足七覺分。 This is called cultivating the four abodes of mindfulness to fulfill the seven factors of awakening.”

阿難白佛。 Ānanda told the Buddha,

是名修四念處。滿足七覺分。 “This is called cultivating the four abodes of mindfulness to fulfill the seven factors of awakening.

云何修七覺分。滿足明解脱。 How does cultivating the seven factors of awakening fulfill insight and liberation?”

佛告阿難。 The Buddha told Ānanda,

若比丘。修念覺分。依遠離依無欲依滅向於捨。 “Suppose a monk cultivates the awakening factor of mindfulness depending on seclusion, the lack of desire, and cessation and heading towards equanimity.

修念覺分已。滿足明解脱。 After cultivating the awakening factor of mindfulness, he fulfills insight and liberation.

乃至修捨覺分。依遠離依無欲依滅向於捨。 … cultivates the awakening factor of equanimity depending on seclusion, the lack of desire, and cessation and heading towards equanimity.

如是修捨覺分已。明解脱滿足。 After thus cultivating the awakening factor of equanimity, he fulfills insight and liberation.

阿難是名法法相類法法相潤。 “Ānanda, these are called the mutual categories of things and the mutual enrichment of things.

如是十三法。一法爲増上。一法爲門。 Thus, these 13 things are developed by one thing, and one thing is their entryway.

次第増進。修習滿足。 Advancing sequentially, they are cultivated and fulfilled.”

佛説此經已。尊者阿難。聞佛所説。歡喜奉行 After the Buddha taught this sutra, Venerable Ānanda heard what he taught, rejoiced, and approved.
