1. Mahāmohatamonaddhe, loke lokantadassinā; Yena saddhammapajjoto, jālito jalitiddhinā.The world is shrouded in the great delusion of darkness, seeing to the end of the world, he lighted up the True Dhamma, blazing forth with his psychic power.{1.1} marks page 1 of volume 1 of the Pāli Text Society Pāli text. 2. Tassa pāde namassitvā, sambuddhassa sirīmato; Saddhammañcassa pūjetvā, katvā saṅghassa cañjaliṃ.After revering the feet of the illustrious Sambuddha, and worshipping the True Dhamma, I pay respects to the Saṅgha.
3. Taṃ taṃ kāraṇamāgamma, dhammādhammesu kovido; Sampattasaddhammapado, satthā dhammapadaṃ subhaṃ.For this or that reason, skilled in Dhamma and adhamma, come to the true state of Dhamma, the Teacher (taught) lovely Dhamma Verses.
4. Desesi karuṇāvegasamussāhitamānaso; Yaṃ ve devamanussānaṃ, pītipāmojjavaḍḍhanaṃ.He taught with his mind uplifted by the surge of compassion, surely increasing the joy and gladness of Devas and of men.
5. Paramparābhatā tassa, nipuṇā atthavaṇṇanā; Yā tambapaṇṇidīpamhi, dīpabhāsāya saṇṭhitā.Nurtured by the lineage, there is a subtle commentary on the meaning, in the Tambapaṇṇi island, written in the island’s language.
6. Na sādhayati sesānaṃ, sattānaṃ hitasampadaṃ; Appeva nāma sādheyya, sabbalokassa sā hitaṃ.But it is not successful for the welfare of other beings. May it perhaps bring welfare to the whole world.
7. Iti āsīsamānena, dantena samacārinā; Kumārakassapenāhaṃ, therena thiracetasā.Such was the hope of the virtuous Elder Kumārakassapa, who is trained, and of steady mind.{1.2} marks page 2 of volume 1 of the Pāli Text Society Pāli text.
8. Saddhammaṭṭhitikāmena, sakkaccaṃ abhiyācito; Taṃ bhāsaṃ ativitthāragatañca vacanakkamaṃ.He respectfully made a request desiring that the True Dhamma should endure; therefore the diffuse language and the way of the words
9. Pahāyāropayitvāna, tantibhāsaṃ manoramaṃ; Gāthānaṃ byañjanapadaṃ, yaṃ tattha na vibhāvitaṃ.I put aside, and translating into the language of the texts, which is pleasing; and whatever in the verses is not explained in the letter or in the words,
10. Kevalaṃ taṃ vibhāvetvā, sesaṃ tameva atthato; Bhāsantarena bhāsissaṃ, āvahanto vibhāvinaṃ; Manaso pītipāmojjaṃ, atthadhammūpanissitaṃ.having explained everything, all according to its purpose, I will speak a different language, bringing to those who have wisdom joy and gladness in their minds, depending on meaning and Dhamma.
