Āsaį¹sasutta Hopes

ā€œTayome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. ā€œThese three people are found in the world.

Katame tayo? What three?

Nirāso, āsaį¹so, vigatāso. The hopeless, the hopeful, and the one who has done away with hope.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave puggalo nirāso? And what, mendicants, is a hopeless person?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo nÄ«ce kule paccājāto hoti, caį¹‡įøÄlakule vā venakule vā nesādakule vā rathakārakule vā pukkusakule vā dalidde appannapānabhojane kasiravuttike, yattha kasirena ghāsacchādo labbhati. Itā€™s when a person is reborn in a low familyā€”a family of corpse-workers, bamboo-workers, hunters, chariot-makers, or scavengersā€”poor, with little to eat or drink, where life is tough, and food and shelter are hard to find.

So ca hoti dubbaį¹‡į¹‡o duddasiko okoį¹­imako bavhābādho kāį¹‡o vā kuį¹‡Ä« vā khaƱjo vā pakkhahato vā, na lābhÄ« annassa pānassa vatthassa yānassa mālāgandhavilepanassa seyyāvasathapadÄ«peyyassa. And theyā€™re ugly, unsightly, deformed, sicklyā€”one-eyed, crippled, lame, or half-paralyzed. They donā€™t get to have food, drink, clothes, and vehicles; garlands, fragrances, and makeup; or bed, house, and lighting.

So suį¹‡Äti: They hear this:

ā€˜itthannāmo kira khattiyo khattiyehi khattiyābhisekena abhisittoā€™ti. ā€˜They say the aristocrats have anointed the aristocrat named so-and-so as king.ā€™

Tassa na evaį¹ hoti: It never occurs to them:

ā€˜kudāssu nāma mampi khattiyā khattiyābhisekena abhisiƱcissantÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Oh, when will the aristocrats anoint me too as king?ā€™

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo nirāso. This is called a hopeless person.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo āsaį¹so? And what, mendicants, is a hopeful person?

Idha, bhikkhave, raƱƱo khattiyassa muddhāvasittassa jeį¹­į¹­ho putto hoti ābhiseko anabhisitto acalappatto. Itā€™s when some person is the eldest son of an anointed aristocratic king. He has not yet been anointed, but is eligible, and has been confirmed in the succession.

So suį¹‡Äti: He hears this:

ā€˜itthannāmo kira khattiyo khattiyehi khattiyābhisekena abhisittoā€™ti. ā€˜They say that the aristocrats have anointed the aristocrat named so-and-so as king.ā€™

Tassa evaį¹ hoti: It occurs to him:

ā€˜kudāssu nāma mampi khattiyā khattiyābhisekena abhisiƱcissantÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Oh, when will the aristocrats anoint me too as king?ā€™

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo āsaį¹so. This is called a hopeful person.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo vigatāso? And what, mendicants, is a person who has done away with hope?

Idha, bhikkhave, rājā hoti khattiyo muddhāvasitto. Itā€™s when a king has been anointed.

So suį¹‡Äti: He hears this:

ā€˜itthannāmo kira khattiyo khattiyehi khattiyābhisekena abhisittoā€™ti. ā€˜They say that the aristocrats have anointed the aristocrat named so-and-so as king.ā€™

Tassa na evaį¹ hoti: It never occurs to him:

ā€˜kudāssu nāma mampi khattiyā khattiyābhisekena abhisiƱcissantÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Oh, when will the aristocrats anoint me too as king?ā€™

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Yā hissa, bhikkhave, pubbe anabhisittassa abhisekāsā sā paį¹­ippassaddhā. Because the former hope he had to be anointed has now died down.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo vigatāso. This is called a person who has done away with hope.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. These are the three people found in the world.

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā bhikkhÅ«su. In the same way, these three people are found among the mendicants.

Katame tayo? What three?

Nirāso, āsaį¹so, vigatāso. The hopeless, the hopeful, and the one who has done away with hope.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo nirāso? And what, mendicants, is a hopeless person?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo dussÄ«lo hoti pāpadhammo asuci saį¹…kassarasamācāro paį¹­icchannakammanto assamaį¹‡o samaį¹‡apaį¹­iƱƱo abrahmacārÄ« brahmacāripaį¹­iƱƱo antopÅ«ti avassuto kasambujāto. Itā€™s when a person is unethical, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitionerā€”though claiming to be oneā€”rotten inside, festering, and depraved.

So suį¹‡Äti: They hear this:

ā€˜itthannāmo kira bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜They say that the mendicant named so-and-so has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.ā€™

Tassa na evaį¹ hoti: It never occurs to them:

ā€˜kudāssu nāma ahampi āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharissāmÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Oh, when will I too realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with my own insight due to the ending of defilements.ā€™

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo nirāso. This is called a hopeless person.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo āsaį¹so? And what, mendicants, is a hopeful person?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«lavā hoti kalyāį¹‡adhammo. Itā€™s when a mendicant is ethical, of good character.

So suį¹‡Äti: They hear this:

ā€˜itthannāmo kira bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜They say that the mendicant named so-and-so has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.ā€™

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu arahaį¹ hoti khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo. Itā€™s when a mendicant is a perfected one, who has ended all defilements.

So suį¹‡Äti: They hear this:

ā€˜itthannāmo kira bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜They say that the mendicant named so-and-so has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.ā€™

Yā hissa, bhikkhave, pubbe avimuttassa vimuttāsā sā paį¹­ippassaddhā. Because the former hope they had to be freed has now died down.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo vigatāso. This is called a person who has done away with hope.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā bhikkhÅ«sÅ«ā€ti. These are the three people found among the mendicants.ā€
