Äsaį¹sasutta Hopes
āTayome, bhikkhave, puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. āThese three people are found in the world.
Katame tayo? What three?
NirÄso, Äsaį¹so, vigatÄso. The hopeless, the hopeful, and the one who has done away with hope.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave puggalo nirÄso? And what, mendicants, is a hopeless person?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo nÄ«ce kule paccÄjÄto hoti, caį¹įøÄlakule vÄ venakule vÄ nesÄdakule vÄ rathakÄrakule vÄ pukkusakule vÄ dalidde appannapÄnabhojane kasiravuttike, yattha kasirena ghÄsacchÄdo labbhati. Itās when a person is reborn in a low familyāa family of corpse-workers, bamboo-workers, hunters, chariot-makers, or scavengersāpoor, with little to eat or drink, where life is tough, and food and shelter are hard to find.
So ca hoti dubbaį¹į¹o duddasiko okoį¹imako bavhÄbÄdho kÄį¹o vÄ kuį¹Ä« vÄ khaƱjo vÄ pakkhahato vÄ, na lÄbhÄ« annassa pÄnassa vatthassa yÄnassa mÄlÄgandhavilepanassa seyyÄvasathapadÄ«peyyassa. And theyāre ugly, unsightly, deformed, sicklyāone-eyed, crippled, lame, or half-paralyzed. They donāt get to have food, drink, clothes, and vehicles; garlands, fragrances, and makeup; or bed, house, and lighting.
So suį¹Äti: They hear this:
āitthannÄmo kira khattiyo khattiyehi khattiyÄbhisekena abhisittoāti. āThey say the aristocrats have anointed the aristocrat named so-and-so as king.ā
Tassa na evaį¹ hoti: It never occurs to them:
ākudÄssu nÄma mampi khattiyÄ khattiyÄbhisekena abhisiƱcissantÄ«āti. āOh, when will the aristocrats anoint me too as king?ā
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo nirÄso. This is called a hopeless person.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo Äsaį¹so? And what, mendicants, is a hopeful person?
Idha, bhikkhave, raƱƱo khattiyassa muddhÄvasittassa jeį¹į¹ho putto hoti Äbhiseko anabhisitto acalappatto. Itās when some person is the eldest son of an anointed aristocratic king. He has not yet been anointed, but is eligible, and has been confirmed in the succession.
So suį¹Äti: He hears this:
āitthannÄmo kira khattiyo khattiyehi khattiyÄbhisekena abhisittoāti. āThey say that the aristocrats have anointed the aristocrat named so-and-so as king.ā
Tassa evaį¹ hoti: It occurs to him:
ākudÄssu nÄma mampi khattiyÄ khattiyÄbhisekena abhisiƱcissantÄ«āti. āOh, when will the aristocrats anoint me too as king?ā
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo Äsaį¹so. This is called a hopeful person.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo vigatÄso? And what, mendicants, is a person who has done away with hope?
Idha, bhikkhave, rÄjÄ hoti khattiyo muddhÄvasitto. Itās when a king has been anointed.
So suį¹Äti: He hears this:
āitthannÄmo kira khattiyo khattiyehi khattiyÄbhisekena abhisittoāti. āThey say that the aristocrats have anointed the aristocrat named so-and-so as king.ā
Tassa na evaį¹ hoti: It never occurs to him:
ākudÄssu nÄma mampi khattiyÄ khattiyÄbhisekena abhisiƱcissantÄ«āti. āOh, when will the aristocrats anoint me too as king?ā
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
YÄ hissa, bhikkhave, pubbe anabhisittassa abhisekÄsÄ sÄ paį¹ippassaddhÄ. Because the former hope he had to be anointed has now died down.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo vigatÄso. This is called a person who has done away with hope.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. These are the three people found in the world.
Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ bhikkhÅ«su. In the same way, these three people are found among the mendicants.
Katame tayo? What three?
NirÄso, Äsaį¹so, vigatÄso. The hopeless, the hopeful, and the one who has done away with hope.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo nirÄso? And what, mendicants, is a hopeless person?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo dussÄ«lo hoti pÄpadhammo asuci saį¹
kassarasamÄcÄro paį¹icchannakammanto assamaį¹o samaį¹apaį¹iƱƱo abrahmacÄrÄ« brahmacÄripaį¹iƱƱo antopÅ«ti avassuto kasambujÄto. Itās when a person is unethical, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitionerāthough claiming to be oneārotten inside, festering, and depraved.
So suį¹Äti: They hear this:
āitthannÄmo kira bhikkhu ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharatÄ«āti. āThey say that the mendicant named so-and-so has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.ā

Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ bhikkhÅ«sÅ«āti. These are the three people found among the mendicants.ā
