Vajirūpamasutta Like Diamond

ā€œTayome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. ā€œThese three people are found in the world.

Katame tayo? What three?

Arukūpamacitto puggalo, vijjūpamacitto puggalo, vajirūpamacitto puggalo. A person with a mind like an open sore, a person with a mind like lightning, and a person with a mind like diamond.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, arukūpamacitto puggalo? And who has a mind like an open sore?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo kodhano hoti upāyāsabahulo Itā€™s a person who is irritable and bad-tempered.

appampi vutto samāno abhisajjati kuppati byāpajjati patitthīyati kopaƱca dosaƱca appaccayaƱca pātukaroti. Even when lightly criticized they lose their temper, becoming annoyed, hostile, and hard-hearted, and they display annoyance, hate, and bitterness.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, duį¹­į¹­hāruko kaį¹­į¹­hena vā kaį¹­halāya vā ghaį¹­į¹­ito bhiyyoso mattāya āsavaį¹ deti; Theyā€™re like a festering sore, which, when you hit it with a stick or a stone, discharges even more.

evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo kodhano hoti upāyāsabahulo In the same way, a person is irritable and bad-tempered.

Itā€™s a person who truly understands: ā€˜This is sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the origin of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the cessation of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā€™.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, cakkhumā puriso rattandhakāratimisāyaį¹ vijjantarikāya rÅ«pāni passeyya; Theyā€™re like a person with keen eyes in the dark of the night, who sees by a flash of lightning.

evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadāā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. In the same way, a person truly understands: ā€˜This is sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the origin of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the cessation of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā€™.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Itā€™s a person who realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, vajirassa natthi kiƱci abhejjaį¹ maį¹‡i vā pāsāį¹‡o vā; Itā€™s like a diamond, which canā€™t be cut by anything at all, not even a gem or a stone.

evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo āsavānaį¹ khayā ā€¦peā€¦ upasampajja viharati. In the same way, a person realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. ā€¦
