Jigucchitabbasutta You Should be Disgusted

ā€œTayome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. ā€œThese three people are found in the world.

Katame tayo? What three?

Atthi, bhikkhave, puggalo jigucchitabbo na sevitabbo na bhajitabbo na payirupāsitabbo. There is a person who you should be disgusted by, and you shouldnā€™t associate with, accompany, or attend them.

Atthi, bhikkhave, puggalo ajjhupekkhitabbo na sevitabbo na bhajitabbo na payirupāsitabbo. There is a person you should regard with equanimity, and you shouldnā€™t associate with, accompany, or attend them.

Atthi, bhikkhave, puggalo sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupāsitabbo. There is a person you should associate with, accompany, and attend.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo jigucchitabbo na sevitabbo na bhajitabbo na payirupāsitabbo? Who is the person you should be disgusted by, and not associate with, accompany, or attend?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo dussÄ«lo hoti pāpadhammo asuci saį¹…kassarasamācāro paį¹­icchannakammanto, assamaį¹‡o samaį¹‡apaį¹­iƱƱo, abrahmacārÄ« brahmacāripaį¹­iƱƱo, antopÅ«ti avassuto kasambujāto. Itā€™s a person who is unethical, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitionerā€”though claiming to be oneā€”rotten inside, festering, and depraved.

EvarÅ«po, bhikkhave, puggalo jigucchitabbo na sevitabbo na bhajitabbo na payirupāsitabbo. You should be disgusted by such a person, and you shouldnā€™t associate with, accompany, or attend them.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

KiƱcāpi, bhikkhave, evarÅ«passa puggalassa na diį¹­į¹­hānugatiį¹ āpajjati, atha kho naį¹ pāpako kittisaddo abbhuggacchati: Even if you donā€™t follow the example of such a person, you still get a bad reputation:

ā€˜pāpamitto purisapuggalo pāpasahāyo pāpasampavaį¹…koā€™ti. ā€˜That individual has bad friends, companions, and associates.ā€™

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ahi gÅ«thagato kiƱcāpi na daį¹sati, atha kho naį¹ makkheti; Theyā€™re like a snake thatā€™s been living in a pile of dung. Even if it doesnā€™t bite, itā€™ll still rub off on you.

evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, kiƱcāpi evarÅ«passa puggalassa na diį¹­į¹­hānugatiį¹ āpajjati, atha kho naį¹ pāpako kittisaddo abbhuggacchati: In the same way, even if you donā€™t follow the example of such a person, you still get a bad reputation:

ā€˜pāpamitto purisapuggalo pāpasahāyo pāpasampavaį¹…koā€™ti. ā€˜That individual has bad friends, companions, and associates.ā€™

Tasmā evarÅ«po puggalo jigucchitabbo na sevitabbo na bhajitabbo na payirupāsitabbo. Thatā€™s why you should be disgusted by such a person, and you shouldnā€™t associate with, accompany, or attend them.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo ajjhupekkhitabbo na sevitabbo na bhajitabbo na payirupāsitabbo? Who is the person you should regard with equanimity, and not associate with, accompany, or attend?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo kodhano hoti upāyāsabahulo, Itā€™s a person who is irritable and bad-tempered.

appampi vutto samāno abhisajjati kuppati byāpajjati patitthīyati, kopaƱca dosaƱca appaccayaƱca pātukaroti. Even when lightly criticized they lose their temper, becoming annoyed, hostile, and hard-hearted, and they display annoyance, hate, and bitterness.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, duį¹­į¹­hāruko kaį¹­į¹­hena vā kaį¹­halāya vā ghaį¹­į¹­ito bhiyyoso mattāya āsavaį¹ deti; Theyā€™re like a festering sore, which, when you hit it with a stick or a stone, discharges even more.

evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave ā€¦peā€¦ In the same way, someone is irritable and bad-tempered.

seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, tindukālātaį¹ kaį¹­į¹­hena vā kaį¹­halāya vā ghaį¹­į¹­itaį¹ bhiyyoso mattāya cicciį¹­Äyati ciį¹­iciį¹­Äyati; Theyā€™re like a firebrand of pale-moon ebony, which, when you hit it with a stick or a stone, sizzles and crackles even more.

evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave ā€¦peā€¦ In the same way, someone is irritable and bad-tempered.

seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, gÅ«thakÅ«po kaį¹­į¹­hena vā kaį¹­halāya vā ghaį¹­į¹­ito bhiyyoso mattāya duggandho hoti; Theyā€™re like a sewer, which, when you stir it with a stick or a stone, stinks even more.

evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo kodhano hoti upāyāsabahulo, In the same way, a person is irritable and bad-tempered.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo sÄ«lavā hoti kalyāį¹‡adhammo. Itā€™s a person who is ethical, of good character.

Evarūpo, bhikkhave, puggalo sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupāsitabbo. You should associate with, accompany, and attend such a person.

Nihīyati puriso nihīnasevī, A man who associates with an inferior goes downhill,

Na ca hāyetha kadāci tulyasevÄ«; but associating with an equal, youā€™ll never decline;

Seį¹­į¹­hamupanamaį¹ udeti khippaį¹, following the best, youā€™ll quickly rise up,

Tasmā attano uttariį¹ bhajethāā€ti. so you should keep company with people better than you.ā€
