CÄtuddasiį¹, bhikkhave, pakkhassa catunnaį¹ mahÄrÄjÄnaį¹ puttÄ imaį¹ lokaį¹ anuvicaranti: And on the fourteenth day of the fortnight, the sons of the four great kings wander about the world, thinking:
ākacci bahÅ« manussÄ manussesu matteyyÄ petteyyÄ sÄmaĆ±Ć±Ä brahmaĆ±Ć±Ä kule jeį¹į¹hÄpacÄyino uposathaį¹ upavasanti paį¹ijÄgaronti puƱƱÄni karontÄ«āti. āHopefully most humans are paying due respect to their parents ā¦ and making merit.ā
Tadahu, bhikkhave, uposathe pannarase cattÄro mahÄrÄjÄno sÄmaƱƱeva imaį¹ lokaį¹ anuvicaranti: And on the fifteenth day sabbath, the four great kings themselves wander about the world, thinking:
ākacci bahÅ« manussÄ manussesu matteyyÄ petteyyÄ sÄmaĆ±Ć±Ä brahmaĆ±Ć±Ä kule jeį¹į¹hÄpacÄyino uposathaį¹ upavasanti paį¹ijÄgaronti puƱƱÄni karontÄ«āti. āHopefully most humans are paying due respect to their parents ā¦ and making merit.ā

Tamenaį¹, bhikkhave, cattÄro mahÄrÄjÄno devÄnaį¹ tÄvatiį¹sÄnaį¹ sudhammÄya sabhÄya sannisinnÄnaį¹ sannipatitÄnaį¹ Ärocenti: the four great kings address the gods of the thirty-three, seated together in the Hall of Justice:
āappakÄ kho, mÄrisÄ, manussÄ manussesu matteyyÄ petteyyÄ sÄmaĆ±Ć±Ä brahmaĆ±Ć±Ä kule jeį¹į¹hÄpacÄyino uposathaį¹ upavasanti paį¹ijÄgaronti puƱƱÄni karontÄ«āti. āOnly a few humans are paying due respect to their parents ā¦ and making merit.ā
Tena kho, bhikkhave, devÄ tÄvatiį¹sÄ anattamanÄ honti: Then the gods of the thirty-three are disappointed, thinking,
ādibbÄ vata, bho, kÄyÄ parihÄyissanti, paripÅ«rissanti asurakÄyÄāti. āThe heavenly hosts will dwindle, while the titan hosts will swell!ā
Sace pana, bhikkhave, bahÅ« honti manussÄ manussesu matteyyÄ petteyyÄ sÄmaĆ±Ć±Ä brahmaĆ±Ć±Ä kule jeį¹į¹hÄpacÄyino uposathaį¹ upavasanti paį¹ijÄgaronti puƱƱÄni karonti. But if many humans are paying due respect to their parents ā¦ and making merit,
Tamenaį¹, bhikkhave, cattÄro mahÄrÄjÄno devÄnaį¹ tÄvatiį¹sÄnaį¹ sudhammÄya sabhÄya sannisinnÄnaį¹ sannipatitÄnaį¹ Ärocenti: the four great kings address the gods of the thirty-three, seated together in the Hall of Justice:
ābahÅ« kho, mÄrisÄ, manussÄ manussesu matteyyÄ petteyyÄ sÄmaĆ±Ć±Ä brahmaĆ±Ć±Ä kule jeį¹į¹hÄpacÄyino uposathaį¹ upavasanti paį¹ijÄgaronti puƱƱÄni karontÄ«āti. āMany humans are paying due respect to their parents ā¦ and making merit.ā
Tena, bhikkhave, devÄ tÄvatiį¹sÄ attamanÄ honti: Then the gods of the thirty-three are pleased, thinking,
ādibbÄ vata bho kÄyÄ paripÅ«rissanti, parihÄyissanti asurakÄyÄāti. āThe heavenly hosts will swell, while the titan hosts will dwindle!ā
BhÅ«tapubbaį¹, bhikkhave, sakko devÄnamindo deve tÄvatiį¹se anunayamÄno tÄyaį¹ velÄyaį¹ imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi: Once upon a time, Sakka, lord of gods, guiding the gods of the thirty-three, recited this verse:
āCÄtuddasiį¹ paƱcadasiį¹, āWhoever wants to be like me
yÄ ca pakkhassa aį¹į¹hamÄ«; would observe the sabbath
PÄį¹ihÄriyapakkhaƱca, complete in all eight factors,
aį¹į¹haį¹
gasusamÄgataį¹; on the fourteenth and the fifteenth days,
Uposathaį¹ upavaseyya, and the eighth day of the fortnight,
yopissa mÄdiso naroāti. as well as on the fortnightly special displays.ā
SÄ kho panesÄ, bhikkhave, sakkena devÄnamindena gÄthÄ duggÄ«tÄ na sugÄ«tÄ dubbhÄsitÄ na subhÄsitÄ. But that verse was poorly sung by Sakka, lord of gods, not well sung; poorly spoken, not well spoken.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
Sakko hi, bhikkhave, devÄnamindo avÄ«tarÄgo avÄ«tadoso avÄ«tamoho. Sakka, lord of gods, is not free of greed, hate, and delusion.
Yo ca kho so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu arahaį¹ khÄ«į¹Äsavo vusitavÄ brahmacariyo katakaraį¹Ä«yo ohitabhÄro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱÄvimutto, tassa kho etaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno kallaį¹ vacanÄya: But for a mendicant who is perfectedāwith defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenmentāit is appropriate to say:
āCÄtuddasiį¹ paƱcadasiį¹, āWhoever wants to be like me
yÄ ca pakkhassa aį¹į¹hamÄ«; would observe the sabbath,
PÄį¹ihÄriyapakkhaƱca, complete in all eight factors,
aį¹į¹haį¹
gasusamÄgataį¹; on the fourteenth and the fifteenth days,
Uposathaį¹ upavaseyya, and the eighth day of the fortnight,
yopissa mÄdiso naroāti. as well as on the fortnightly special displays.ā
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
So hi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vÄ«tarÄgo vÄ«tadoso vÄ«tamohoāti. Because that mendicant is free of greed, hate, and delusion.ā
Sattamaį¹.
