Pabbatarājasutta A Mountain The King of Mountains
“Himavantaṁ, bhikkhave, pabbatarājaṁ nissāya mahāsālā tīhi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhanti. “Monks, the great Sal trees that live in dependence on the Himalayas, the king of mountains, prosper in terms of three kinds of prosperity. “Mendicants, great sal trees grow in three ways supported by the Himalayas, the king of mountains.
Katamāhi tīhi? Which three? What three?
Sākhāpattapalāsena vaḍḍhanti, tacapapaṭikāya vaḍḍhanti, pheggusārena vaḍḍhanti. They prosper in terms of branches, leaves, & foliage. They prosper in terms of bark & shoots. They prosper in terms of softwood and heartwood. The branches, leaves, and foliage; the bark and shoots; and the softwood and heartwood.
Himavantaṁ, bhikkhave, pabbatarājaṁ nissāya mahāsālā imāhi tīhi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhanti. The great Sal trees that grow in dependence on the Himalayas, the king of mountains, prosper in terms of these three kinds of prosperity. Great sal trees grow in these three ways supported by the Himalayas, the king of mountains.
Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, saddhaṁ kulapatiṁ nissāya anto jano tīhi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhati. “In the same way, the descendants who live in dependence on a clansman of conviction prosper in terms of three kinds of prosperity. In the same way, a family grows in three ways supported by a family head with faith.
Katamāhi tīhi? Which three? What three?
Saddhāya vaḍḍhati, sīlena vaḍḍhati, paññāya vaḍḍhati. They prosper in terms of conviction. They prosper in terms of virtue. They prosper in terms of discernment. Faith, ethics, and wisdom.
Saddhaṁ, bhikkhave, kulapatiṁ nissāya anto jano imāhi tīhi vaḍḍhīhi vaḍḍhatīti. The descendants who live in dependence on a clansman of conviction prosper in terms of these three kinds of prosperity. A family grows in these three ways supported by a family head with faith.
Yathāpi pabbato selo, Like a mountain of rock Supported by the rocky mountain
araññasmiṁ brahāvane; in the wilderness, in a mighty grove, in the wilds, the formidable forest,
Taṁ rukkhā upanissāya, dependent on which there prosper the tree grows
vaḍḍhante te vanappatī. lords of the forest, great trees— to become lord of the forest.
Tatheva sīlasampannaṁ, in the same way, So too, when the family head
saddhaṁ kulapatiṁ idha; those who here live dependent on is ethical and faithful,
Upanissāya vaḍḍhanti, a clansman of conviction supported by them, they grow:
puttadārā ca bandhavā; —consummate in virtue— children, partners, and kin,
Amaccā ñātisaṅghā ca, prosper: wife & children, colleagues, relatives,
ye cassa anujīvino. friends, dependents, & kin. and those dependent for their livelihood.
Tyāssa sīlavato sīlaṁ, Seeing the virtue of that virtuous one, Seeing the ethical conduct of the virtuous,
cāgaṁ sucaritāni ca; his liberality & good conduct, the generosity and good deeds,
Passamānānukubbanti, those who are perceptive those who see clearly
attamatthaṁ vicakkhaṇā. follow suit. do likewise.
Idha dhammaṁ caritvāna, Having, here in this world, followed the Dhamma, Having practiced the teaching here,
maggaṁ sugatigāminaṁ; the path to a good destination, the path that goes to a good place,
Nandino devalokasmiṁ, they delight in the world of the devas, they delight in the heavenly realm,
modanti kāmakāmino”ti. enjoying the pleasures they desire.” enjoying all the pleasures they desire.”
