Dutiyadvebrāhmaṇasutta Two People (2) Two Brahmins (2nd)
Atha kho dve brāhmaṇā jiṇṇā vuddhā mahallakā addhagatā vayoanuppattā vīsavassasatikā jātiyā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te brāhmaṇā bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: On one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Then two brahmans—feeble old men, aged, advanced in years, having come to the last stage of life, 120 years old—went to the Blessed One. On arrival, they exchanged courteous greetings with him and, after an exchange of friendly greetings & courtesies, sat to one side. As they were sitting there, they said to him: Then two old brahmins—elderly and senior, who were advanced in years and had reached the final stage of life, a hundred and twenty years old—went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“mayamassu, bho gotama, brāhmaṇā jiṇṇā vuddhā mahallakā addhagatā vayoanuppattā vīsavassasatikā jātiyā; “Master Gotama, we are brahmans—feeble old men, aged, advanced in years, having come to the last stage of life, 120 years old. “We brahmins, worthy Gotama, are old, elderly and senior, we’re advanced in years and have reached the final stage of life; we’re a hundred and twenty years old.
te camhā akatakalyāṇā akatakusalā akatabhīruttāṇā. And we have done no admirable deeds, no skillful deeds, no deeds that allay our fears. And we haven’t done what is good and skillful, nor have we made a shelter from fear.
Ovadatu no bhavaṁ gotamo, anusāsatu no bhavaṁ gotamo yaṁ amhākaṁ assa dīgharattaṁ hitāya sukhāyā”ti. Teach us, Master Gotama. Instruct us, Master Gotama, for our long-term benefit & happiness.” Advise us, worthy Gotama, instruct us! It will be for our lasting welfare and happiness.”
“Taggha tumhe, brāhmaṇā, jiṇṇā vuddhā mahallakā addhagatā vayoanuppattā vīsavassasatikā jātiyā; “Indeed, brahmans, you are feeble old men, aged, advanced in years, having come to the last stage of life, 120 years old. “Indeed, brahmins, you’re old, elderly and senior.
te cattha akatakalyāṇā akatakusalā akatabhīruttāṇā. And you have done no admirable deeds, no skillful deeds, no deeds that allay your fears. And you haven’t done what is good and skillful, nor have you made a shelter from fear.
Āditto kho ayaṁ, brāhmaṇā, loko jarāya byādhinā maraṇena. This world is on fire with aging, illness, & death. This world is burning with old age, sickness, and death.
Evaṁ āditte kho, brāhmaṇā, loke jarāya byādhinā maraṇena, yo idha kāyena saṁyamo vācāya saṁyamo manasā saṁyamo, taṁ tassa petassa tāṇañca leṇañca dīpañca saraṇañca parāyaṇañcāti. With the world thus on fire with aging, illness, & death, any restraint of body, speech, & intellect practiced here will be one’s shelter, cave, island, & refuge after death in the world beyond.” But restraint here by way of body, speech, and mind is the shelter, asylum, island, refuge, and final haven for the departed.
Ādittasmiṁ agārasmiṁ, When a house is aflame, When your house is on fire,
yaṁ nīharati bhājanaṁ; the vessel salvaged you rescue the pot
Taṁ tassa hoti atthāya, is the one that will be of use, that’s useful,
no ca yaṁ tattha ḍayhati. not the one left there to burn. not the one that’s burnt.
Evaṁ āditto kho loko, So when the world is on fire And as the world is on fire
jarāya maraṇena ca; with aging & death, with old age and death,
Nīharetheva dānena, you should salvage (your wealth) by giving: you should rescue by giving,
dinnaṁ hoti sunīhataṁ. What’s given is well salvaged. for what’s given is rescued.
Yodha kāyena saṁyamo, When you’re restrained here The restraint practiced here—
Vācāya uda cetasā; in body, speech, & awareness; of body, speech, and mind—
Taṁ tassa petassa sukhāya hoti, when you make merit while still alive: leads the departed to happiness,
Yaṁ jīvamāno pakaroti puññan”ti. That will be for your bliss after death.” as the good deeds done while living.”
