Atha kho dve brÄhmaį¹Ä jiį¹į¹Ä vuddhÄ mahallakÄ addhagatÄ vayoanuppattÄ vÄ«savassasatikÄ jÄtiyÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnÄ kho te brÄhmaį¹Ä bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: Then two old brahminsāelderly and senior, who were advanced in years and had reached the final stage of life, being a hundred and twenty years oldāwent up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:
āmayamassu, bho gotama, brÄhmaį¹Ä jiį¹į¹Ä vuddhÄ mahallakÄ addhagatÄ vayoanuppattÄ vÄ«savassasatikÄ jÄtiyÄ; āWe brahmins, worthy Gotama, are old, elderly and senior, weāre advanced in years and have reached the final stage of life; weāre a hundred and twenty years old.
te camhÄ akatakalyÄį¹Ä akatakusalÄ akatabhÄ«ruttÄį¹Ä. And we havenāt done what is good and skillful, nor have we made a shelter from fear.
Ovadatu no bhavaį¹ gotamo, anusÄsatu no bhavaį¹ gotamo yaį¹ amhÄkaį¹ assa dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitÄya sukhÄyÄāti. Advise us, worthy Gotama, instruct us! It will be for our lasting welfare and happiness.ā
āTaggha tumhe, brÄhmaį¹Ä, jiį¹į¹Ä vuddhÄ mahallakÄ addhagatÄ vayoanuppattÄ vÄ«savassasatikÄ jÄtiyÄ; āIndeed, brahmins, youāre old, elderly and senior.
te cattha akatakalyÄį¹Ä akatakusalÄ akatabhÄ«ruttÄį¹Ä. And you havenāt done what is good and skillful, nor have you made a shelter from fear.
Äditto kho ayaį¹, brÄhmaį¹Ä, loko jarÄya byÄdhinÄ maraį¹ena. This world is burning with old age, sickness, and death.
Evaį¹ Äditte kho, brÄhmaį¹Ä, loke jarÄya byÄdhinÄ maraį¹ena, yo idha kÄyena saį¹yamo vÄcÄya saį¹yamo manasÄ saį¹yamo, taį¹ tassa petassa tÄį¹aƱca leį¹aƱca dÄ«paƱca saraį¹aƱca parÄyaį¹aƱcÄti. But restraint here by way of body, speech, and mind is the shelter, protection, island, refuge, and haven for the departed.
Ädittasmiį¹ agÄrasmiį¹, When your house is on fire,
yaį¹ nÄ«harati bhÄjanaį¹; you rescue the pot
Taį¹ tassa hoti atthÄya, thatās useful,
no ca yaį¹ tattha įøayhati. not the one thatās burnt.
Evaį¹ Äditto kho loko, And as the world is on fire
jarÄya maraį¹ena ca; with old age and death,
NÄ«haretheva dÄnena, you should rescue by giving,
dinnaį¹ hoti sunÄ«hataį¹. for whatās given is rescued.
Yodha kÄyena saį¹yamo, The restraint practiced hereā
VÄcÄya uda cetasÄ; of body, speech, and mindā
Taį¹ tassa petassa sukhÄya hoti, leads the departed to happiness,
Yaį¹ jÄ«vamÄno pakaroti puƱƱanāti. as the good deeds done while living.ā
