Nibbutasutta Quenched

Atha kho jāį¹‡ussoį¹‡i brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho jāį¹‡ussoį¹‡i brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then the brahmin Jānussoį¹‡i went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:

ā€œā€˜sandiį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ nibbānaį¹ sandiį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ nibbānanā€™ti, bho gotama, vuccati. ā€œWorthy Gotama, they say that ā€˜extinguishment is apparent in the present lifeā€™.

Kittāvatā nu kho, bho gotama, sandiį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ nibbānaį¹ hoti akālikaį¹ ehipassikaį¹ opaneyyikaį¹ paccattaį¹ veditabbaį¹ viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ā€ti? In what way is extinguishment apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves?ā€

Ratto kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, rāgena abhibhÅ«to pariyādinnacitto attabyābādhāyapi ceteti, parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, cetasikampi dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹­isaį¹vedeti. ā€œA greedy person, overcome by greed, intends to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They experience mental pain and sadness.

Rāge pahÄ«ne nevattabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na cetasikampi dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹­isaį¹vedeti. When greed has been given up, they donā€™t intend to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They donā€™t experience mental pain and sadness.

Evampi kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, sandiį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ nibbānaį¹ hoti. This is how extinguishment is apparent in the present life.

Duį¹­į¹­ho kho, brāhmaį¹‡a ā€¦peā€¦ A hateful person ā€¦

mÅ«įø·ho kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, mohena abhibhÅ«to pariyādinnacitto attabyābādhāyapi ceteti, parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, cetasikampi dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹­isaį¹vedeti. A deluded person, overcome by delusion, intends to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They experience mental pain and sadness.

Mohe pahÄ«ne nevattabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na cetasikaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹­isaį¹vedeti. When delusion has been given up, they donā€™t intend to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They donā€™t experience mental pain and sadness.

Evampi kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, sandiį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ nibbānaį¹ hoti. This, too, is how extinguishment is apparent in the present life.

Yato kho ayaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, anavasesaį¹ rāgakkhayaį¹ paį¹­isaį¹vedeti, anavasesaį¹ dosakkhayaį¹ paį¹­isaį¹vedeti, anavasesaį¹ mohakkhayaį¹ paį¹­isaį¹vedeti; When you experience the ending of greed, hate, and delusion without anything left over,

evaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, sandiį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ nibbānaį¹ hoti akālikaį¹ ehipassikaį¹ opaneyyikaį¹ paccattaį¹ veditabbaį¹ viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ā€ti. thatā€™s how extinguishment is apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.ā€

ā€œAbhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! ā€¦

upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
