Ayaį¹ khvajja, bho gotama, rÄjantepure rÄjapurisÄnaį¹ sannisinnÄnaį¹ sannipatitÄnaį¹ antarÄkathÄ udapÄdÄ«āti. This is what came up in the conversation among the kingās retinue today, while sitting together in the royal compound.ā
āTÄ«į¹i kho imÄni, brÄhmaį¹a, pÄį¹ihÄriyÄni. āBrahmin, there are three kinds of demonstration.
KatamÄni tÄ«į¹i? What three?
IddhipÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹, ÄdesanÄpÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹, anusÄsanÄ«pÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹. A demonstration of psychic power, a demonstration of revealing, and a demonstration of instruction.
KatamaƱca, brÄhmaį¹a, iddhipÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹? And what is the demonstration of psychic power?
Idha, brÄhmaį¹a, ekacco anekavihitaį¹ iddhividhaį¹ paccanubhoti: āekopi hutvÄ bahudhÄ hoti, bahudhÄpi hutvÄ eko hoti; ÄvibhÄvaį¹, tirobhÄvaį¹; tirokuį¹į¹aį¹ tiropÄkÄraį¹ tiropabbataį¹ asajjamÄno gacchati, seyyathÄpi ÄkÄse; pathaviyÄpi ummujjanimujjaį¹ karoti, seyyathÄpi udake; udakepi abhijjamÄne gacchati, seyyathÄpi pathaviyaį¹; ÄkÄsepi pallaį¹

Itās when someone wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unobstructed through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. They control the body as far as the realm of divinity.
Idaį¹ vuccati, brÄhmaį¹a, iddhipÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹. This is called the demonstration of psychic power.
KatamaƱca, brÄhmaį¹a, ÄdesanÄpÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹? And what is the demonstration of revealing?
Idha, brÄhmaį¹a, ekacco nimittena Ädisati: In one case, someone reveals by means of a sign:
āevampi te mano, itthampi te mano, itipi te cittanāti. āThis is what youāre thinking, such is your thought, and thus is your state of mind.ā
So bahuƱcepi Ädisati tatheva taį¹ hoti, no aƱƱathÄ. And even if they reveal this many times, it turns out exactly so, not otherwise.
Idha pana, brÄhmaį¹a, ekacco na heva kho nimittena Ädisati, api ca kho manussÄnaį¹ vÄ amanussÄnaį¹ vÄ devatÄnaį¹ vÄ saddaį¹ sutvÄ Ädisati: In another case, someone reveals after hearing it from humans or non-humans or deities:
āevampi te mano, itthampi te mano, itipi te cittanāti. āThis is what youāre thinking, such is your thought, and thus is your state of mind.ā
So bahuƱcepi Ädisati tatheva taį¹ hoti, no aƱƱathÄ. And even if they reveal this many times, it turns out exactly so, not otherwise.
Idha pana, brÄhmaį¹a, ekacco na heva kho nimittena Ädisati napi manussÄnaį¹ vÄ amanussÄnaį¹ vÄ devatÄnaį¹ vÄ saddaį¹ sutvÄ Ädisati, api ca kho vitakkayato vicÄrayato vitakkavipphÄrasaddaį¹ sutvÄ Ädisati: In another case, someone reveals by hearing the sound of thought spreading as someone thinks and considers:
āevampi te mano, itthampi te mano, itipi te cittanāti. āThis is what youāre thinking, such is your thought, and thus is your state of mind.ā
So bahuƱcepi Ädisati tatheva taį¹ hoti, no aƱƱathÄ. And even if they reveal this many times, it turns out exactly so, not otherwise.
Idha pana, brÄhmaį¹a, ekacco na heva kho nimittena Ädisati, napi manussÄnaį¹ vÄ amanussÄnaį¹ vÄ devatÄnaį¹ vÄ saddaį¹ sutvÄ Ädisati, napi vitakkayato vicÄrayato vitakkavipphÄrasaddaį¹ sutvÄ Ädisati, api ca kho avitakkaį¹ avicÄraį¹ samÄdhiį¹ samÄpannassa cetasÄ ceto paricca pajÄnÄti: In another case, someone comprehends the mind of a person who has attained the immersion thatās free of placing the mind and keeping it connected. They understand:
āyathÄ imassa bhoto manosaį¹
khÄrÄ paį¹ihitÄ imassa cittassa anantarÄ amuį¹ nÄma vitakkaį¹ vitakkessatÄ«āti. āJudging by the way this personās intentions are directed, immediately after this mind state, theyāll think this thought.ā
So bahuƱcepi Ädisati tatheva taį¹ hoti, no aƱƱathÄ. And even if they reveal this many times, it turns out exactly so, not otherwise.
Idaį¹ vuccati, brÄhmaį¹a, ÄdesanÄpÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹. This is called the demonstration of revealing.
KatamaƱca, brÄhmaį¹a, anusÄsanÄ«pÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹? And what is a demonstration of instruction?
Idha, brÄhmaį¹a, ekacco evamanusÄsati: Itās when someone instructs others like this:
āevaį¹ vitakketha, mÄ evaį¹ vitakkayittha; evaį¹ manasi karotha, mÄ evaį¹ manasÄkattha; idaį¹ pajahatha, idaį¹ upasampajja viharathÄāti. āThink like this, not like that. Focus your mind like this, not like that. Give up this, and live having achieved that.ā
Idaį¹ vuccati, brÄhmaį¹a, anusÄsanÄ«pÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹. This is called a demonstration of instruction.
ImÄni kho, brÄhmaį¹a, tÄ«į¹i pÄį¹ihÄriyÄni. These are the three kinds of demonstration.
Imesaį¹ te, brÄhmaį¹a, tiį¹į¹aį¹ pÄį¹ihÄriyÄnaį¹ katamaį¹ pÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹ khamati abhikkantataraƱca paį¹Ä«tataraƱcÄāti? Of these three kinds of demonstration, which do you consider to be the finest?ā

Idaį¹ me, bho gotama, pÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹ mÄyÄsahadhammarÅ«paį¹ viya khÄyati. This seems to me like a magic trick.
Yampidaį¹, bho gotama, pÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹ idhekacco nimittena Ädisati: And the demonstration where someone reveals something by means of a sign,

YaƱca kho idaį¹, bho gotama, pÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹ idhekacco evaį¹ anusÄsati: But as to the demonstration where someone instructs others:

Idameva, bho gotama, pÄį¹ihÄriyaį¹ khamati imesaį¹ tiį¹į¹aį¹ pÄį¹ihÄriyÄnaį¹ abhikkantataraƱca paį¹Ä«tataraƱca. I prefer this demonstration, worthy Gotama. Itās the finest of the three kinds of demonstration.
