Saį¹…gāravasutta With Saį¹…gārava

Atha kho saį¹…gāravo brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Saį¹…gārava the brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho saį¹…gāravo brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

ā€œmayamassu, bho gotama, brāhmaį¹‡Ä nāma. ā€œWorthy Gotama, we who are called brahmins

YaƱƱaį¹ yajāmapi yajāpemapi. make sacrifices and encourage others to make sacrifices.

Tatra, bho gotama, yo ceva yajati yo ca yajāpeti sabbe te anekasārÄ«rikaį¹ puƱƱappaį¹­ipadaį¹ paį¹­ipannā honti, yadidaį¹ yaƱƱādhikaraį¹‡aį¹. Now, worthy Gotama, both of these peopleā€”the one who sacrifices and the one who encourages others to sacrificeā€”are doing good for many people on account of that sacrifice.

Yo panāyaį¹, bho gotama, yassa vā tassa vā kulā agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajito ekamattānaį¹ dameti, ekamattānaį¹ sameti, ekamattānaį¹ parinibbāpeti, evamassāyaį¹ ekasārÄ«rikaį¹ puƱƱappaį¹­ipadaį¹ paį¹­ipanno hoti, yadidaį¹ pabbajjādhikaraį¹‡anā€ti. But, worthy Gotama, when someone has gone forth from the lay life to homelessness, they tame, calm, and extinguish themselves alone. That being so, they are doing good for just one person on account of that going forth.ā€

ā€œTena hi, brāhmaį¹‡a, taƱƱevettha paį¹­ipucchissāmi. Yathā te khameyya tathā naį¹ byākareyyāsi. ā€œWell then, brahmin, Iā€™ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brāhmaį¹‡a, What do you think, brahmin?

idha tathāgato loke uppajjati arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavā. A Realized One arises in the world, perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.

So evamāha: He says,

ā€˜ethāyaį¹ maggo ayaį¹ paį¹­ipadā yathāpaį¹­ipanno ahaį¹ anuttaraį¹ brahmacariyogadhaį¹ sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā pavedemi; ā€˜Come, this is the path, this is the practice. Practicing like this, I realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual life with my own insight, and I make it known.

etha, tumhepi tathā paį¹­ipajjatha, yathāpaį¹­ipannā tumhepi anuttaraį¹ brahmacariyogadhaį¹ sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharissathāā€™ti. Please, all of you, practice like this, and you too will realize the supreme culmination of the spiritual life, and will live having realized it with your own insight.ā€™

Iti ayaƱceva satthā dhammaį¹ deseti, pare ca tathatthāya paį¹­ipajjanti, tāni kho pana honti anekānipi satāni anekānipi sahassāni anekānipi satasahassāni. So the teacher teaches Dhamma, and others practice accordingly, in their hundreds and thousands, and hundreds of thousands.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brāhmaį¹‡a, What do you think, brahmin?

iccāyaį¹ evaį¹ sante ekasārÄ«rikā vā puƱƱappaį¹­ipadā hoti anekasārÄ«rikā vā, yadidaį¹ pabbajjādhikaraį¹‡anā€ti? This being so, are they doing good for just one person or for many people on account of going forth?ā€

ā€œIccāyampi, bho gotama, evaį¹ sante anekasārÄ«rikā puƱƱappaį¹­ipadā hoti, yadidaį¹ pabbajjādhikaraį¹‡anā€ti. ā€œThis being so, worthy Gotama, they are doing good for many people on account of going forth.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, āyasmā ānando saį¹…gāravaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable Ānanda said to Saį¹…gārava,

ā€œimāsaį¹ te, brāhmaį¹‡a, dvinnaį¹ paį¹­ipadānaį¹ katamā paį¹­ipadā khamati appatthatarā ca appasamārambhatarā ca mahapphalatarā ca mahānisaį¹satarā cāā€ti? ā€œBrahmin, which of these two practices do you believe has fewer requirements and undertakings, yet is more fruitful and beneficial?ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, saį¹…gāravo brāhmaį¹‡o āyasmantaį¹ ānandaį¹ etadavoca: Saį¹…gārava said to Ānanda,

ā€œseyyathāpi bhavaį¹ gotamo bhavaį¹ cānando. ā€œThose such as the worthies Gotama and Ānanda

Ete me pujjā, ete me pāsaį¹sāā€ti. are honored and praised by me!ā€

Dutiyampi kho āyasmā ānando saį¹…gāravaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ etadavoca: For a second time, Ānanda said to Saį¹…gārava,

ā€œna kho tyāhaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, evaį¹ pucchāmi: ā€œBrahmin, I didnā€™t ask you

ā€˜ke vā te pujjā ke vā te pāsaį¹sāā€™ti? who you honor and praise.

Evaį¹ kho tyāhaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, pucchāmi: I asked you

ā€˜imāsaį¹ te, brāhmaį¹‡a, dvinnaį¹ paį¹­ipadānaį¹ katamā paį¹­ipadā khamati appatthatarā ca appasamārambhatarā ca mahapphalatarā ca mahānisaį¹satarā cāā€™ā€ti? which of these two practices do you believe has fewer requirements and undertakings, yet is more fruitful and beneficial?ā€

Dutiyampi kho saį¹…gāravo brāhmaį¹‡o āyasmantaį¹ ānandaį¹ etadavoca: For a second time Saį¹…gārava said to Ānanda,

ā€œseyyathāpi bhavaį¹ gotamo bhavaį¹ cānando. ā€œThose such as the worthies Gotama and Ānanda

Ete me pujjā, ete me pāsaį¹sāā€ti. are honored and praised by me!ā€

Tatiyampi kho āyasmā ānando saį¹…gāravaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ etadavoca: For a third time, Ānanda said to Saį¹…gārava,

ā€œna kho tyāhaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, evaį¹ pucchāmi: ā€œBrahmin, I didnā€™t ask you

ā€˜ke vā te pujjā ke vā te pāsaį¹sāā€™ti? who you honor and praise.

Evaį¹ kho tyāhaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, pucchāmi: I asked you

ā€˜imāsaį¹ te, brāhmaį¹‡a, dvinnaį¹ paį¹­ipadānaį¹ katamā paį¹­ipadā khamati appatthatarā ca appasamārambhatarā ca mahapphalatarā ca mahānisaį¹satarā cāā€™ā€ti? which of these two practices do you believe has fewer requirements and undertakings, yet is more fruitful and beneficial?ā€

Tatiyampi kho saį¹…gāravo brāhmaį¹‡o āyasmantaį¹ ānandaį¹ etadavoca: For a third time Saį¹…gārava said to Ānanda,

ā€œseyyathāpi bhavaį¹ gotamo bhavaį¹ cānando. ā€œThose such as the worthies Gotama and Ānanda

Ete me pujjā, ete me pāsaį¹sāā€ti. are honored and praised by me!ā€

Atha kho bhagavato etadahosi: Then it occurred to the Buddha,

ā€œyāva tatiyampi kho saį¹…gāravo brāhmaį¹‡o ānandena sahadhammikaį¹ paƱhaį¹ puį¹­į¹­ho saį¹sādeti no vissajjeti. ā€œThough Ānanda asked him a sensible question three times, Saį¹…gārava falters without answering.

YannÅ«nāhaį¹ parimoceyyanā€ti. Why donā€™t I give him a way out?ā€

Atha kho bhagavā saį¹…gāravaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ etadavoca: So the Buddha said to Saį¹…gārava,

ā€œkā nvajja, brāhmaį¹‡a, rājantepure rājapurisānaį¹ sannisinnānaį¹ sannipatitānaį¹ antarākathā udapādÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBrahmin, what came up in the conversation among the kingā€™s retinue today, sitting together in the royal compound?ā€

ā€œAyaį¹ khvajja, bho gotama, rājantepure rājapurisānaį¹ sannisinnānaį¹ sannipatitānaį¹ antarākathā udapādi: ā€œWorthy Gotama, this came up:

ā€˜pubbe sudaį¹ appatarā ceva bhikkhÅ« ahesuį¹ bahutarā ca uttari manussadhammā iddhipāį¹­ihāriyaį¹ dassesuį¹; ā€˜Formerly, it seems, there were fewer mendicants, but more of them displayed superhuman demonstrations of psychic power;

etarahi pana bahutarā ceva bhikkhÅ« appatarā ca uttari manussadhammā iddhipāį¹­ihāriyaį¹ dassentÄ«ā€™ti. while these days, there are more mendicants, but fewer display superhuman demonstrations of psychic power.ā€™

Ayaį¹ khvajja, bho gotama, rājantepure rājapurisānaį¹ sannisinnānaį¹ sannipatitānaį¹ antarākathā udapādÄ«ā€ti. This is what came up in the conversation among the kingā€™s retinue today, while sitting together in the royal compound.ā€

ā€œTÄ«į¹‡i kho imāni, brāhmaį¹‡a, pāį¹­ihāriyāni. ā€œBrahmin, there are three kinds of demonstration.

Katamāni tÄ«į¹‡i? What three?

Iddhipāį¹­ihāriyaį¹, ādesanāpāį¹­ihāriyaį¹, anusāsanÄ«pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹. A demonstration of psychic power, a demonstration of revealing, and a demonstration of instruction.

KatamaƱca, brāhmaį¹‡a, iddhipāį¹­ihāriyaį¹? And what is the demonstration of psychic power?

Idha, brāhmaį¹‡a, ekacco anekavihitaį¹ iddhividhaį¹ paccanubhoti: ā€˜ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaį¹, tirobhāvaį¹; tirokuį¹­į¹­aį¹ tiropākāraį¹ tiropabbataį¹ asajjamāno gacchati, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaį¹ karoti, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati, seyyathāpi pathaviyaį¹; ākāsepi pallaį¹…kena kamati, seyyathāpi pakkhÄ« sakuį¹‡o; imepi candimasÅ«riye evaį¹mahiddhike evaį¹mahānubhāve pāį¹‡inā parimasati parimajjati, yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaį¹ vattetiā€™. Itā€™s when someone wields the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unobstructed through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. They control the body as far as the realm of divinity.

Idaį¹ vuccati, brāhmaį¹‡a, iddhipāį¹­ihāriyaį¹. This is called the demonstration of psychic power.

KatamaƱca, brāhmaį¹‡a, ādesanāpāį¹­ihāriyaį¹? And what is the demonstration of revealing?

Idha, brāhmaį¹‡a, ekacco nimittena ādisati: In one case, someone reveals by means of a sign:

ā€˜evampi te mano, itthampi te mano, itipi te cittanā€™ti. ā€˜This is what youā€™re thinking, such is your thought, and thus is your state of mind.ā€™

So bahuƱcepi ādisati tatheva taį¹ hoti, no aƱƱathā. And even if they reveal this many times, it turns out exactly so, not otherwise.

Idha pana, brāhmaį¹‡a, ekacco na heva kho nimittena ādisati, api ca kho manussānaį¹ vā amanussānaį¹ vā devatānaį¹ vā saddaį¹ sutvā ādisati: In another case, someone reveals after hearing it from humans or non-humans or deities:

ā€˜evampi te mano, itthampi te mano, itipi te cittanā€™ti. ā€˜This is what youā€™re thinking, such is your thought, and thus is your state of mind.ā€™

So bahuƱcepi ādisati tatheva taį¹ hoti, no aƱƱathā. And even if they reveal this many times, it turns out exactly so, not otherwise.

Idha pana, brāhmaį¹‡a, ekacco na heva kho nimittena ādisati napi manussānaį¹ vā amanussānaį¹ vā devatānaį¹ vā saddaį¹ sutvā ādisati, api ca kho vitakkayato vicārayato vitakkavipphārasaddaį¹ sutvā ādisati: In another case, someone reveals by hearing the sound of thought spreading as someone thinks and considers:

ā€˜evampi te mano, itthampi te mano, itipi te cittanā€™ti. ā€˜This is what youā€™re thinking, such is your thought, and thus is your state of mind.ā€™

So bahuƱcepi ādisati tatheva taį¹ hoti, no aƱƱathā. And even if they reveal this many times, it turns out exactly so, not otherwise.

Idha pana, brāhmaį¹‡a, ekacco na heva kho nimittena ādisati, napi manussānaį¹ vā amanussānaį¹ vā devatānaį¹ vā saddaį¹ sutvā ādisati, napi vitakkayato vicārayato vitakkavipphārasaddaį¹ sutvā ādisati, api ca kho avitakkaį¹ avicāraį¹ samādhiį¹ samāpannassa cetasā ceto paricca pajānāti: In another case, someone comprehends the mind of a person who has attained the immersion thatā€™s free of placing the mind and keeping it connected. They understand:

ā€˜yathā imassa bhoto manosaį¹…khārā paį¹‡ihitā imassa cittassa anantarā amuį¹ nāma vitakkaį¹ vitakkessatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Judging by the way this personā€™s intentions are directed, immediately after this mind state, theyā€™ll think this thought.ā€™

So bahuƱcepi ādisati tatheva taį¹ hoti, no aƱƱathā. And even if they reveal this many times, it turns out exactly so, not otherwise.

Idaį¹ vuccati, brāhmaį¹‡a, ādesanāpāį¹­ihāriyaį¹. This is called the demonstration of revealing.

KatamaƱca, brāhmaį¹‡a, anusāsanÄ«pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹? And what is a demonstration of instruction?

Idha, brāhmaį¹‡a, ekacco evamanusāsati: Itā€™s when someone instructs others like this:

ā€˜evaį¹ vitakketha, mā evaį¹ vitakkayittha; evaį¹ manasi karotha, mā evaį¹ manasākattha; idaį¹ pajahatha, idaį¹ upasampajja viharathāā€™ti. ā€˜Think like this, not like that. Focus your mind like this, not like that. Give up this, and live having achieved that.ā€™

Idaį¹ vuccati, brāhmaį¹‡a, anusāsanÄ«pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹. This is called a demonstration of instruction.

Imāni kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, tÄ«į¹‡i pāį¹­ihāriyāni. These are the three kinds of demonstration.

Imesaį¹ te, brāhmaį¹‡a, tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ pāį¹­ihāriyānaį¹ katamaį¹ pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹ khamati abhikkantataraƱca paį¹‡Ä«tataraƱcāā€ti? Of these three kinds of demonstration, which do you consider to be the finest?ā€

ā€œTatra, bho gotama, yadidaį¹ pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹ idhekacco anekavihitaį¹ iddhividhaį¹ paccanubhoti ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œRegarding this, worthy Gotama, a demonstration of psychic power

yāva brāhmalokāpi kāyena vasaį¹ vatteti,

idaį¹, bho gotama, pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹ yova naį¹ karoti sova naį¹ paį¹­isaį¹vedeti, yova naį¹ karoti tasseva taį¹ hoti. is experienced only by the one who performs it, occurring only to them.

Idaį¹ me, bho gotama, pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹ māyāsahadhammarÅ«paį¹ viya khāyati. This seems to me like a magic trick.

Yampidaį¹, bho gotama, pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹ idhekacco nimittena ādisati: And the demonstration where someone reveals something by means of a sign,

ā€˜evampi te mano, itthampi te mano, itipi te cittanā€™ti, so bahuƱcepi ādisati tatheva taį¹ hoti, no aƱƱathā.

Idha pana, bho gotama, ekacco na heva kho nimittena ādisati, api ca kho manussānaį¹ vā amanussānaį¹ vā devatānaį¹ vā saddaį¹ sutvā ādisati ā€¦peā€¦ or after hearing it from humans, non-humans, or deities,

napi manussānaį¹ vā amanussānaį¹ vā devatānaį¹ vā saddaį¹ sutvā ādisati, api ca kho vitakkayato vicārayato vitakkavipphārasaddaį¹ sutvā ādisati ā€¦peā€¦ or by hearing the sound of thought spreading as someone thinks and considers,

napi vitakkayato vicārayato vitakkavipphārasaddaį¹ sutvā ādisati, api ca kho avitakkaį¹ avicāraį¹ samādhiį¹ samāpannassa cetasā ceto paricca pajānāti: or by comprehending the mind of another person,

ā€˜yathā imassa bhoto manosaį¹…khārā paį¹‡ihitā imassa cittassa anantarā amhaį¹ nāma vitakkaį¹ vitakkessatÄ«ā€™ti, so bahuƱcepi ādisati tatheva taį¹ hoti, no aƱƱathā.

Idampi, bho gotama, pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹ yova naį¹ karoti sova naį¹ paį¹­isaį¹vedeti, yova naį¹ karoti tasseva taį¹ hoti. is also experienced only by the one who performs it, occurring only to them.

Idampi me, bho gotama, pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹ māyāsahadhammarÅ«paį¹ viya khāyati. This also seems to me like a magic trick.

YaƱca kho idaį¹, bho gotama, pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹ idhekacco evaį¹ anusāsati: But as to the demonstration where someone instructs others:

ā€˜evaį¹ vitakketha, mā evaį¹ vitakkayittha; evaį¹ manasi karotha, mā evaį¹ manasākattha; idaį¹ pajahatha, idaį¹ upasampajja viharathāā€™ti. ā€˜Think like this, not like that. Focus your mind like this, not like that. Give up this, and live having achieved that.ā€™

Idameva, bho gotama, pāį¹­ihāriyaį¹ khamati imesaį¹ tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ pāį¹­ihāriyānaį¹ abhikkantataraƱca paį¹‡Ä«tataraƱca. I prefer this demonstration, worthy Gotama. Itā€™s the finest of the three kinds of demonstration.

Acchariyaį¹, bho gotama, abbhutaį¹, bho gotama. Itā€™s incredible, worthy Gotama, itā€™s amazing,

Yāvasubhāsitamidaį¹ bhotā gotamena imehi ca mayaį¹ tÄ«hi pāį¹­ihāriyehi samannāgataį¹ bhavantaį¹ gotamaį¹ dhārema. how well this was said by the worthy Gotama. We regard the worthy Gotama as someone who possesses these three kinds of demonstration.

BhavaƱhi gotamo anekavihitaį¹ iddhividhaį¹ paccanubhoti ā€¦peā€¦ yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaį¹ vatteti, For the worthy Gotama wields the many kinds of psychic power ā€¦ controlling the body as far as the realm of divinity.

bhavaƱhi gotamo avitakkaį¹ avicāraį¹ samādhiį¹ samāpannassa cetasā ceto paricca pajānāti: And the worthy Gotama comprehends the mind of another person who has attained the immersion that is free of placing the mind and keeping it connected. He understands:

ā€˜yathā imassa bhoto manosaį¹…khārā paį¹‡ihitā imassa cittassa anantarā amuį¹ nāma vitakkaį¹ vitakkessatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Judging by the way this personā€™s intentions are directed, immediately after this mind state theyā€™ll think this thought.ā€™

BhavaƱhi gotamo evamanusāsati: And the worthy Gotama instructs others like this:

ā€˜evaį¹ vitakketha, mā evaį¹ vitakkayittha; evaį¹ manasi karotha, mā evaį¹ manasākattha; idaį¹ pajahatha, idaį¹ upasampajja viharathāā€™ā€ti. ā€˜Think like this, not like that. Focus your mind like this, not like that. Give up this, and live having achieved that.ā€™ā€

ā€œAddhā kho tyāhaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, āsajja upanÄ«ya vācā bhāsitā; ā€œYour words are clearly invasive and intrusive, brahmin.

api ca tyāhaį¹ byākarissāmi. Nevertheless, I will answer you.

AhaƱhi, brāhmaį¹‡a, anekavihitaį¹ iddhividhaį¹ paccanubhomi ā€¦peā€¦ yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaį¹ vattemi. For I do wield the many kinds of psychic power ā€¦ controlling the body as far as the realm of divinity.

AhaƱhi, brāhmaį¹‡a, avitakkaį¹ avicāraį¹ samādhiį¹ samāpannassa cetasā ceto paricca pajānāmi: And I do comprehend the mind of another person who has attained the immersion that is free of placing the mind and keeping it connected. I understand:

ā€˜yathā imassa bhoto manosaį¹…khārā paį¹‡ihitā, imassa cittassa anantarā amuį¹ nāma vitakkaį¹ vitakkessatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Judging by the way this personā€™s intentions are directed, immediately after this mind state theyā€™ll think this thought.ā€™

AhaƱhi, brāhmaį¹‡a, evamanusāsāmi: And I do instruct others like this:

ā€˜evaį¹ vitakketha, mā evaį¹ vitakkayittha; evaį¹ manasi karotha, mā evaį¹ manasākattha; idaį¹ pajahatha, idaį¹ upasampajja viharathāā€™ā€ti. ā€˜Think like this, not like that. Focus your mind like this, not like that. Give up this, and live having achieved that.ā€™ā€

ā€œAtthi pana, bho gotama, aƱƱo ekabhikkhupi yo imehi tÄ«hi pāį¹­ihāriyehi samannāgato, aƱƱatra bhotā gotamenāā€ti? ā€œBut worthy Gotama, is there even one other mendicant who possesses these three kinds of demonstration, apart from the worthy Gotama?ā€

ā€œNa kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, ekaį¹yeva sataį¹ na dve satāni na tÄ«į¹‡i satāni na cattāri satāni na paƱca satāni, atha kho bhiyyova, ye bhikkhÅ« imehi tÄ«hi pāį¹­ihāriyehi samannāgatāā€ti. ā€œThereā€™s not just one hundred mendicants, brahmin, who possess these three kinds of demonstration, nor two, three, four, or five hundred, but many more than that.ā€

ā€œKahaį¹ pana, bho gotama, etarahi te bhikkhÅ« viharantÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut where are these mendicants now staying?ā€

ā€œImasmiį¹yeva kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, bhikkhusaį¹…gheā€ti. ā€œRight here, brahmin, in this Saį¹…gha of mendicants.ā€

ā€œAbhikkantaį¹, bho gotama, abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama. ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent!

Seyyathāpi, bho gotama, nikkujjitaį¹ vā ukkujjeyya, paį¹­icchannaį¹ vā vivareyya, mÅ«įø·hassa vā maggaį¹ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaį¹ dhāreyya: ā€˜cakkhumanto rÅ«pāni dakkhantÄ«ā€™ti; evamevaį¹ bhotā gotamena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see whatā€™s there, worthy Gotama has made the teaching clear in many ways.

Esāhaį¹ bhavantaį¹ gotamaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gacchāmi, dhammaƱca bhikkhusaį¹…ghaƱca. I go for refuge to the worthy Gotama, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Saį¹…gha.

Upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
