Ājīvakasutta A Disciple of the Ājīvakas

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā ānando kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositārāme. At one time Venerable Ānanda was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaā€™s Monastery.

Atha kho aƱƱataro ājÄ«vakasāvako gahapati yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaį¹ ānandaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so ājÄ«vakasāvako gahapati āyasmantaį¹ ānandaį¹ etadavoca: Then a householder who was a disciple of the ĀjÄ«vaka ascetics went up to Venerable Ānanda, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to Ānanda:

ā€œKesaį¹ no, bhante ānanda, dhammo svākkhāto? ā€œHonorable Ānanda, whose teaching is well explained?

Ke loke suppaį¹­ipannā? Who in the world is practicing well?

Ke loke sukatāā€ti? Who in the world has done well?ā€

ā€œTena hi, gahapati, taƱƱevettha paį¹­ipucchissāmi, yathā te khameyya tathā naį¹ byākareyyāsi. ā€œWell then, householder, Iā€™ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, gahapati, What do you think, householder?

ye rāgassa pahānāya dhammaį¹ desenti, dosassa pahānāya dhammaį¹ desenti, mohassa pahānāya dhammaį¹ desenti, tesaį¹ dhammo svākkhāto no vā? Is the teaching of those who teach for giving up greed, hate, and delusion well explained or not?

Kathaį¹ vā te ettha hotÄ«ā€ti? Or how do you see this?ā€

ā€œYe, bhante, rāgassa pahānāya dhammaį¹ desenti, dosassa pahānāya dhammaį¹ desenti, mohassa pahānāya dhammaį¹ desenti, tesaį¹ dhammo svākkhāto. ā€œThe teaching of those who teach for giving up greed, hate, and delusion is well explained.

Evaį¹ me ettha hotÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s how I see it.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, gahapati, ā€œWhat do you think, householder?

ye rāgassa pahānāya paį¹­ipannā, dosassa pahānāya paį¹­ipannā, mohassa pahānāya paį¹­ipannā, te loke suppaį¹­ipannā no vā? Are those who practice for giving up greed, hate, and delusion practicing well or not?

Kathaį¹ vā te ettha hotÄ«ā€ti? Or how do you see this?ā€

ā€œYe, bhante, rāgassa pahānāya paį¹­ipannā, dosassa pahānāya paį¹­ipannā, mohassa pahānāya paį¹­ipannā, te loke suppaį¹­ipannā. ā€œThose who practice for giving up greed, hate, and delusion are practicing well.

Evaį¹ me ettha hotÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s how I see it.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, gahapati, ā€œWhat do you think, householder?

yesaį¹ rāgo pahÄ«no ucchinnamÅ«lo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaį¹…kato āyatiį¹ anuppādadhammo, yesaį¹ doso pahÄ«no ucchinnamÅ«lo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaį¹…kato āyatiį¹ anuppādadhammo, yesaį¹ moho pahÄ«no ucchinnamÅ«lo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaį¹…kato āyatiį¹ anuppādadhammo, te loke sukatā no vā? Have those whoā€™ve given up greed, hate, and delusionā€”so theyā€™re cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, and unable to arise in the futureā€”done well in the world, or not?

ā€œYesaį¹, bhante, rāgo pahÄ«no ucchinnamÅ«lo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaį¹…kato āyatiį¹ anuppādadhammo, yesaį¹ doso pahÄ«no ā€¦peā€¦ yesaį¹ moho pahÄ«no ucchinnamÅ«lo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaį¹…kato āyatiį¹ anuppādadhammo, te loke sukatā. ā€œThose whoā€™ve given up greed, hate, and delusion have done well in the world.

ā€œIti kho, gahapati, tayāvetaį¹ byākataį¹: ā€œSo, householder, youā€™ve declared:

ā€˜ye, bhante, rāgassa pahānāya dhammaį¹ desenti, dosassa pahānāya dhammaį¹ desenti, mohassa pahānāya dhammaį¹ desenti, tesaį¹ dhammo svākkhātoā€™ti. ā€˜The teaching of those who teach for giving up greed, hate, and delusion is well explained.ā€™

Tayāvetaį¹ byākataį¹: And youā€™ve declared:

ā€˜ye, bhante, rāgassa pahānāya paį¹­ipannā, dosassa pahānāya paį¹­ipannā, mohassa pahānāya paį¹­ipannā, te loke suppaį¹­ipannāā€™ti. ā€˜Those who practice for giving up greed, hate, and delusion are practicing well.ā€™

Tayāvetaį¹ byākataį¹: And youā€™ve declared:

ā€˜yesaį¹, bhante, rāgo pahÄ«no ucchinnamÅ«lo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaį¹…kato āyatiį¹ anuppādadhammo, yesaį¹ doso pahÄ«no ā€¦peā€¦ yesaį¹ moho pahÄ«no ucchinnamÅ«lo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaį¹…kato āyatiį¹ anuppādadhammo, te loke sukatāā€™ā€ti. ā€˜Those whoā€™ve given up greed, hate, and delusion have done well in the world.ā€™ā€

ā€œAcchariyaį¹, bhante, abbhutaį¹, bhante. ā€œItā€™s incredible, sir, itā€™s amazing!

Na ceva nāma sadhammukkaį¹sanā bhavissati, na ca paradhammāpasādanā. Thereā€™s no acclaiming your own teaching or disrespecting someone elseā€™s,

Āyataneva dhammadesanā, attho ca vutto, attā ca anupanÄ«to. just teaching whatā€™s relevant in that context. The goal is spoken of, but the self is not involved.

Tumhe, bhante ānanda, rāgassa pahānāya dhammaį¹ desetha, dosassa ā€¦peā€¦ mohassa pahanāya dhammaį¹ desetha. You, sir, teach Dhamma for giving up greed, hate, and delusion.

Tumhākaį¹, bhante ānanda, dhammo svākkhāto. Your teaching is well explained.

Tumhe, bhante ānanda, rāgassa pahānāya paį¹­ipannā, dosassa ā€¦peā€¦ mohassa pahānāya paį¹­ipannā. You, sir, practice for giving up greed, hate, and delusion.

Tumhe, bhante, loke suppaį¹­ipannā. You in the world are practicing well.

Tumhākaį¹, bhante ānanda, rāgo pahÄ«no ucchinnamÅ«lo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaį¹…kato āyatiį¹ anuppādadhammo, tumhākaį¹ doso pahÄ«no ā€¦peā€¦ tumhākaį¹ moho pahÄ«no ucchinnamÅ«lo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaį¹…kato āyatiį¹ anuppādadhammo. Youā€™ve given up greed, hate, and delusion.

Tumhe loke sukatā. You in the world have done well.

Abhikkantaį¹, bhante, abhikkantaį¹, bhante. Excellent, sir! Excellent!

Seyyathāpi, bhante, nikkujjitaį¹ vā ukkujjeyya, paį¹­icchannaį¹ vā vivareyya, mÅ«įø·hassa vā maggaį¹ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaį¹ dhāreyya: ā€˜cakkhumanto rÅ«pāni dakkhantÄ«ā€™ti; evamevaį¹ ayyena ānandena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see whatā€™s there, Master Ānanda has made the teaching clear in many ways.

Esāhaį¹, bhante ānanda, taį¹ bhagavantaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gacchāmi dhammaƱca bhikkhusaį¹…ghaƱca. I go for refuge to the Buddha, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Saį¹…gha.

Upāsakaį¹ maį¹ ayyo ānando dhāretu, ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may Master Ānanda remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
