ÄjÄ«vakasutta A Disciple of the ÄjÄ«vakas
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ Änando kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme. At one time Venerable Änanda was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaās Monastery.
Atha kho aƱƱataro ÄjÄ«vakasÄvako gahapati yenÄyasmÄ Änando tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so ÄjÄ«vakasÄvako gahapati Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ etadavoca: Then a householder who was a disciple of the ÄjÄ«vaka ascetics went up to Venerable Änanda, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to Änanda:
āKesaį¹ no, bhante Änanda, dhammo svÄkkhÄto? āHonorable Änanda, whose teaching is well explained?
Ke loke suppaį¹ipannÄ? Who in the world is practicing well?
Ke loke sukatÄāti? Who in the world has done well?ā
āTena hi, gahapati, taƱƱevettha paį¹ipucchissÄmi, yathÄ te khameyya tathÄ naį¹ byÄkareyyÄsi. āWell then, householder, Iāll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like.
Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, gahapati, What do you think, householder?
ye rÄgassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, dosassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, mohassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, tesaį¹ dhammo svÄkkhÄto no vÄ? Is the teaching of those who teach for giving up greed, hate, and delusion well explained or not?
Kathaį¹ vÄ te ettha hotÄ«āti? Or how do you see this?ā
āYe, bhante, rÄgassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, dosassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, mohassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, tesaį¹ dhammo svÄkkhÄto. āThe teaching of those who teach for giving up greed, hate, and delusion is well explained.
Evaį¹ me ettha hotÄ«āti. Thatās how I see it.ā
āTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, gahapati, āWhat do you think, householder?
ye rÄgassa pahÄnÄya paį¹ipannÄ, dosassa pahÄnÄya paį¹ipannÄ, mohassa pahÄnÄya paį¹ipannÄ, te loke suppaį¹ipannÄ no vÄ? Are those who practice for giving up greed, hate, and delusion practicing well or not?

kato Äyatiį¹ anuppÄdadhammo, te loke sukatÄ no vÄ? Have those whoāve given up greed, hate, and delusionāso theyāre cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, and unable to arise in the futureādone well in the world, or not?

āye, bhante, rÄgassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, dosassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, mohassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desenti, tesaį¹ dhammo svÄkkhÄtoāti. āThe teaching of those who teach for giving up greed, hate, and delusion is well explained.ā
TayÄvetaį¹ byÄkataį¹: And youāve declared:

kato Äyatiį¹ anuppÄdadhammo, te loke sukatÄāāti. āThose whoāve given up greed, hate, and delusion have done well in the world.āā
āAcchariyaį¹, bhante, abbhutaį¹, bhante. āItās incredible, sir, itās amazing!
Na ceva nÄma sadhammukkaį¹sanÄ bhavissati, na ca paradhammÄpasÄdanÄ. Thereās no acclaiming your own teaching or disrespecting someone elseās,
Äyataneva dhammadesanÄ, attho ca vutto, attÄ ca anupanÄ«to. just teaching whatās relevant in that context. The goal is spoken of, but the self is not involved.
Tumhe, bhante Änanda, rÄgassa pahÄnÄya dhammaį¹ desetha, dosassa ā¦peā¦ mohassa pahanÄya dhammaį¹ desetha. You, sir, teach Dhamma for giving up greed, hate, and delusion.
TumhÄkaį¹, bhante Änanda, dhammo svÄkkhÄto. Your teaching is well explained.

Tumhe, bhante, loke suppaį¹ipannÄ. You in the world are practicing well.

kato Äyatiį¹ anuppÄdadhammo. Youāve given up greed, hate, and delusion.
Tumhe loke sukatÄ. You in the world have done well.
Abhikkantaį¹, bhante, abhikkantaį¹, bhante. Excellent, sir! Excellent!
SeyyathÄpi, bhante, nikkujjitaį¹ vÄ ukkujjeyya, paį¹icchannaį¹ vÄ vivareyya, mÅ«įø·hassa vÄ maggaį¹ Äcikkheyya, andhakÄre vÄ telapajjotaį¹ dhÄreyya: ācakkhumanto rÅ«pÄni dakkhantÄ«āti; evamevaį¹ ayyena Änandena anekapariyÄyena dhammo pakÄsito. As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see whatās there, Master Änanda has made the teaching clear in many ways.
EsÄhaį¹, bhante Änanda, taį¹ bhagavantaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gacchÄmi dhammaƱca bhikkhusaį¹
ghaƱca. I go for refuge to the Buddha, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Saį¹
gha.
UpÄsakaį¹ maį¹ ayyo Änando dhÄretu, ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may Master Änanda remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā
