Gandhajātasutta Fragrances

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œTÄ«į¹‡imāni, bhante, gandhajātāni, yesaį¹ anuvātaį¹yeva gandho gacchati, no paį¹­ivātaį¹. ā€œSir, there are these three kinds of fragrance that spread only with the wind, not against it.

Katamāni tÄ«į¹‡i? What three?

MÅ«lagandho, sāragandho, pupphagandhoā€”The fragrance of roots, heartwood, and flowers.

imāni kho, bhante, tÄ«į¹‡i gandhajātāni, yesaį¹ anuvātaį¹yeva gandho gacchati, no paį¹­ivātaį¹. These are the three kinds of fragrance that spread only with the wind, not against it.

Atthi nu kho, bhante, kiƱci gandhajātaį¹ yassa anuvātampi gandho gacchati, paį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchati, anuvātapaį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchatÄ«ā€ti? Is there a kind of fragrance that spreads with the wind, and against it, and both ways?ā€

ā€œAtthānanda, kiƱci gandhajātaį¹ yassa anuvātampi gandho gacchati, paį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchati, anuvātapaį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThere is, Ānanda, such a kind of fragrance.ā€

ā€œKatamaƱca pana, bhante, gandhajātaį¹ yassa anuvātampi gandho gacchati, paį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchati, anuvātapaį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSo what, sir, is that kind of fragrance?ā€

ā€œIdhānanda, yasmiį¹ gāme vā nigame vā itthÄ« vā puriso vā buddhaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato hoti, dhammaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato hoti, saį¹…ghaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato hoti, ā€œItā€™s when, Ānanda, in some village or town, a woman or man has gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹…gha.

pāį¹‡Ätipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti, adinnādānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācārā paį¹­ivirato hoti, musāvādā paį¹­ivirato hoti, surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, sÄ«lavā hoti kalyāį¹‡adhammo, They donā€™t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants. Theyā€™re ethical, of good character.

vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraį¹ ajjhāvasati muttacāgo payatapāį¹‡i vossaggarato yācayogo dānasaį¹vibhāgarato. They live at home with a heart rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.

Tassa disāsu samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Ä vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhāsanti: Ascetics and brahmins everywhere praise them for these good qualities;

ā€˜amukasmiį¹ nāma gāme vā nigame vā itthÄ« vā puriso vā buddhaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato hoti, dhammaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato hoti, saį¹…ghaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato hoti,

pāį¹‡Ätipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti, adinnādānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācārā paį¹­ivirato hoti, musāvādā paį¹­ivirato hoti, surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, sÄ«lavā hoti kalyāį¹‡adhammo,

vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraį¹ ajjhāvasati muttacāgo payatapāį¹‡i vossaggarato yācayogo dānasaį¹vibhāgaratoā€™ti.

Devatāpissa vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhāsanti: even the deities praise them.

ā€˜amukasmiį¹ nāma gāme vā nigame vā itthÄ« vā puriso vā buddhaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato hoti, dhammaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato hoti, saį¹…ghaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato hoti,

pāį¹‡Ätipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti ā€¦peā€¦ surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, sÄ«lavā hoti kalyāį¹‡adhammo,

vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraį¹ ajjhāvasati muttacāgo payatapāį¹‡i vossaggarato yācayogo dānasaį¹vibhāgaratoā€™ti.

Idaį¹ kho taį¹, ānanda, gandhajātaį¹ yassa anuvātampi gandho gacchati, paį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchati, anuvātapaį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchatÄ«ti. This is the kind of fragrance that spreads with the wind, and against it, and both.

Na pupphagandho paį¹­ivātameti, The fragrance of flowers doesnā€™t spread against the wind,

Na candanaį¹ tagaramallikā vā; nor sandalwood, pinwheel flowers, or jasmine;

SataƱca gandho paį¹­ivātameti, but the fragrance of the good spreads against the wind;

Sabbā disā sappuriso pavāyatÄ«ā€ti. a true personā€™s virtue spreads in every direction.ā€
