GandhajÄtasutta Fragrances
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ Änando yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Änanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āTÄ«į¹imÄni, bhante, gandhajÄtÄni, yesaį¹ anuvÄtaį¹yeva gandho gacchati, no paį¹ivÄtaį¹. āSir, there are these three kinds of fragrance that spread only with the wind, not against it.
KatamÄni tÄ«į¹i? What three?
MÅ«lagandho, sÄragandho, pupphagandhoāThe fragrance of roots, heartwood, and flowers.
imÄni kho, bhante, tÄ«į¹i gandhajÄtÄni, yesaį¹ anuvÄtaį¹yeva gandho gacchati, no paį¹ivÄtaį¹. These are the three kinds of fragrance that spread only with the wind, not against it.
Atthi nu kho, bhante, kiƱci gandhajÄtaį¹ yassa anuvÄtampi gandho gacchati, paį¹ivÄtampi gandho gacchati, anuvÄtapaį¹ivÄtampi gandho gacchatÄ«āti? Is there a kind of fragrance that spreads with the wind, and against it, and both ways?ā
āAtthÄnanda, kiƱci gandhajÄtaį¹ yassa anuvÄtampi gandho gacchati, paį¹ivÄtampi gandho gacchati, anuvÄtapaį¹ivÄtampi gandho gacchatÄ«āti. āThere is, Änanda, such a kind of fragrance.ā
āKatamaƱca pana, bhante, gandhajÄtaį¹ yassa anuvÄtampi gandho gacchati, paį¹ivÄtampi gandho gacchati, anuvÄtapaį¹ivÄtampi gandho gacchatÄ«āti? āSo what, sir, is that kind of fragrance?ā
āIdhÄnanda, yasmiį¹ gÄme vÄ nigame vÄ itthÄ« vÄ puriso vÄ buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti, dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti, saį¹
ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti, āItās when, Änanda, in some village or town, a woman or man has gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹
gha.
pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, adinnÄdÄnÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, kÄmesumicchÄcÄrÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, musÄvÄdÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, surÄmerayamajjapamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, sÄ«lavÄ hoti kalyÄį¹adhammo, They donāt kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants. Theyāre ethical, of good character.
vigatamalamaccherena cetasÄ agÄraį¹ ajjhÄvasati muttacÄgo payatapÄį¹i vossaggarato yÄcayogo dÄnasaį¹vibhÄgarato. They live at home with a heart rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.
Tassa disÄsu samaį¹abrÄhmaį¹Ä vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsanti: Ascetics and brahmins everywhere praise them for these good qualities;

Na pupphagandho paį¹ivÄtameti, The fragrance of flowers doesnāt spread against the wind,
Na candanaį¹ tagaramallikÄ vÄ; nor sandalwood, pinwheel flowers, or jasmine;
SataƱca gandho paį¹ivÄtameti, but the fragrance of the good spreads against the wind;
SabbÄ disÄ sappuriso pavÄyatÄ«āti. a true personās virtue spreads in every direction.ā
