Sekkhasutta A Trainee
Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āāSekho, sekhoāti, bhante, vuccati. āSir, they speak of this person called āa traineeā.
KittÄvatÄ nu kho, bhante, sekho hotÄ«āti? How is a trainee defined?ā
āSikkhatÄ«ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmÄ sekhoti vuccati. āThey train, mendicant, thatās why theyāre called āa traineeā.
KiƱca sikkhati? What is their training?
Adhisīlampi sikkhati, adhicittampi sikkhati, adhipaƱƱampi sikkhati. They train in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.
SikkhatÄ«ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmÄ sekhoti vuccatÄ«ti. They train, thatās why theyāre called āa traineeā.
Sekhassa sikkhamÄnassa, As a trainee trains,
ujumaggÄnusÄrino; following the straight road,
Khayasmiį¹ paį¹hamaį¹ ƱÄį¹aį¹, first they know about ending;
tato aĆ±Ć±Ä anantarÄ. enlightenment follows in the same lifetime.
Tato aƱƱÄvimuttassa, Then the knowledge comes
ƱÄį¹aį¹ ve hoti tÄdino; such a one, freed through enlightenment,
AkuppÄ me vimuttÄ«ti, with the end of the fetters of continued existence:
bhavasaį¹yojanakkhayeāti. āMy freedom is unshakable.āā
