Dutiyasikkhattayasutta Three Trainings (2nd)
āTisso imÄ, bhikkhave, sikkhÄ. āMendicants, these are the three trainings.
KatamÄ tisso? What three?
AdhisÄ«lasikkhÄ, adhicittasikkhÄ, adhipaƱƱÄsikkhÄ. The training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.
KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, adhisÄ«lasikkhÄ? And what is the training in the higher ethics?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«lavÄ hoti ā¦peā¦ samÄdÄya sikkhati sikkhÄpadesu. Itās when a mendicant is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyāve undertaken.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, adhisÄ«lasikkhÄ. This is called the training in the higher ethics.
KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, adhicittasikkhÄ? And what is the training in the higher mind?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vivicceva kÄmehi ā¦peā¦ catutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Itās when a mendicant, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption ā¦ second absorption ā¦ third absorption ā¦ fourth absorption.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, adhicittasikkhÄ. This is called the training in the higher mind.
KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, adhipaƱƱÄsikkhÄ? And what is the training in the higher wisdom?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharati. Itās when a mendicant realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

ImÄ kho, bhikkhave, tisso sikkhÄti. These are the three trainings.
AdhisÄ«laį¹ adhicittaį¹, The higher ethics, the higher mind,
adhipaƱƱaƱca vÄ«riyavÄ; and the higher wisdom should be practiced
ThÄmavÄ dhitimÄ jhÄyÄ«, by those energetic, steadfast, and resolute,
sato guttindriyo care. practicing absorption, mindful, with guarded senses.
YathÄ pure tathÄ pacchÄ, As before, so behind;
yathÄ pacchÄ tathÄ pure; as behind, so before.
YathÄ adho tathÄ uddhaį¹, As below, so above;
yathÄ uddhaį¹ tathÄ adho. as above, so below.
YathÄ divÄ tathÄ rattiį¹, As by day, so by night;
yathÄ rattiį¹ tathÄ divÄ; as by night, so by day.
Abhibhuyya disÄ sabbÄ, Having mastered every direction
appamÄį¹asamÄdhinÄ. with limitless immersion,
TamÄhu sekhaį¹ paį¹ipadaį¹, they call them a ātrainee on the pathā,
atho saį¹suddhacÄriyaį¹; and āone living a pure lifeā.
TamÄhu loke sambuddhaį¹, But a wise one who has gone to the end of the path
dhÄ«raį¹ paį¹ipadantaguį¹. they call a āBuddhaā in the world.
ViƱƱÄį¹assa nirodhena, With the cessation of consciousness,
taį¹hÄkkhayavimuttino; freed by the ending of craving,
Pajjotasseva nibbÄnaį¹, the liberation of their heart
vimokkho hoti cetasoāti. is like a lamp going out.ā
