Paį¹­hamaājānÄ«yasutta The Thoroughbred (1st)

ā€œTÄ«hi, bhikkhave, aį¹…gehi samannāgato raƱƱo bhadro assājānÄ«yo rājāraho hoti rājabhoggo, raƱƱo aį¹…ganteva saį¹…khyaį¹ gacchati. ā€œMendicants, a fine royal thoroughbred with three factors is worthy of a king, fit to serve a king, and reckoned as a factor of kingship.

Idha, bhikkhave, raƱƱo bhadro assājānÄ«yo vaį¹‡į¹‡asampanno ca hoti balasampanno ca javasampanno ca. Itā€™s when a fine royal thoroughbred is beautiful, strong, and fast.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, tÄ«hi aį¹…gehi samannāgato raƱƱo bhadro assājānÄ«yo rājāraho hoti rājabhoggo, raƱƱo aį¹…ganteva saį¹…khyaį¹ gacchati. A fine royal thoroughbred with these three factors is worthy of a king. ā€¦

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tÄ«hi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu āhuneyyo hoti pāhuneyyo dakkhiį¹‡eyyo aƱjalikaraį¹‡Ä«yo anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassa. In the same way, a mendicant with three qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vaį¹‡į¹‡asampanno ca hoti balasampanno ca javasampanno ca. Itā€™s when a mendicant is beautiful, strong, and fast.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vaį¹‡į¹‡asampanno hoti? And how is a mendicant beautiful?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«lavā hoti, pātimokkhasaį¹varasaį¹vuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno aį¹‡umattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvÄ«, samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu. Itā€™s when a mendicant is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyā€™ve undertaken.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vaį¹‡į¹‡asampanno hoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant is beautiful.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu balasampanno hoti? And how is a mendicant strong?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āraddhavÄ«riyo viharati akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ upasampadāya thāmavā daįø·haparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu. Itā€™s when a mendicant lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They are strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu balasampanno hoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant is strong.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu javasampanno hoti? And how is a mendicant fast?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti; Itā€™s when a mendicant truly understands: ā€˜This is sufferingā€™ ā€¦

ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti; ā€˜This is the origin of sufferingā€™ ā€¦

ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti; ā€˜This is the cessation of sufferingā€™ ā€¦

ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadāā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā€™.
