ā€œTÄ«į¹‡imāni, bhikkhave, nidānāni kammānaį¹ samudayāya. ā€œMendicants, there are these three sources that give rise to deeds.

Katamāni tÄ«į¹‡i? What three?

AtÄ«te, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati; Desire comes up for things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present.

anāgate, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati;

paccuppanne, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, atÄ«te chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati? And how does desire come up for things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present?

AtÄ«te, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha cetasā anuvitakketi anuvicāreti. In your heart you think about and consider things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present.

Tassa atÄ«te chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha cetasā anuvitakkayato anuvicārayato chando jāyati. When you do this, desire comes up,

Chandajāto tehi dhammehi saį¹yutto hoti. and you get attached to those things.

Etamahaį¹, bhikkhave, saį¹yojanaį¹ vadāmi yo cetaso sārāgo. This lust in the heart is what I call a fetter.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, atÄ«te chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando jāyati. Thatā€™s how desire comes up for things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present.

anāgate, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati;

paccuppanne, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, atÄ«te chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati? And how does desire not come up for things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present?

AtÄ«tānaį¹, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniyānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ āyatiį¹ vipākaį¹ pajānāti. You understand the future result of things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present.

Āyatiį¹ vipākaį¹ viditvā tadabhinivatteti. When you know this, you grow disillusioned,

Tadabhinivattetvā cetasā abhinivijjhitvā paƱƱāya ativijjha passati. your heart becomes dispassionate, and you see it with penetrating wisdom.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, atÄ«te chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati. Thatā€™s how desire doesnā€™t come up for things that stimulate desire and greed in the past, future, or present.

Anāgatānaį¹, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniyānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ āyatiį¹ vipākaį¹ pajānāti.

Āyatiį¹ vipākaį¹ viditvā tadabhinivatteti.

Tadabhinivattetvā cetasā abhinivijjhitvā paƱƱāya ativijjha passati.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, anāgate chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniye dhamme ārabbha chando na jāyati.

Paccuppannānaį¹, bhikkhave, chandarāgaį¹­į¹­hāniyānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ āyatiį¹ vipākaį¹ pajānāti, āyatiį¹ vipākaį¹ viditvā tadabhinivatteti, tadabhinivattetvā cetasā abhinivijjhitvā paƱƱāya ativijjha passati.
