ĀneƱjasutta Imperturbable

ā€œTayome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. ā€œMendicants, these three people are found in the world.

Katame tayo? What three?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo sabbaso rÅ«pasaƱƱānaį¹ samatikkamā paį¹­ighasaƱƱānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamā nānattasaƱƱānaį¹ amanasikārā ā€˜ananto ākāsoā€™ti ākāsānaƱcāyatanaį¹ upasampajja viharati. First, a person, going totally beyond perceptions of form, with the ending of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity, aware that ā€˜space is infiniteā€™, enters and remains in the dimension of infinite space.

So tadassādeti taį¹ nikāmeti tena ca vittiį¹ āpajjati, tatra į¹­hito tadadhimutto tabbahulavihārÄ« aparihÄ«no kālaį¹ kurumāno ākāsānaƱcāyatanÅ«pagānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying. If theyā€™re set on that, committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die theyā€™re reborn in the company of the gods of the dimension of infinite space.

ĀkāsānaƱcāyatanÅ«pagānaį¹, bhikkhave, devānaį¹ vÄ«sati kappasahassāni āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹. The lifespan of the gods of infinite space is twenty thousand eons.

Tattha puthujjano yāvatāyukaį¹ į¹­hatvā yāvatakaį¹ tesaį¹ devānaį¹ āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ taį¹ sabbaį¹ khepetvā nirayampi gacchati tiracchānayonimpi gacchati pettivisayampi gacchati. An ordinary person stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then they go to hell or the animal realm or the ghost realm.

Bhagavato pana sāvako tattha yāvatāyukaį¹ į¹­hatvā yāvatakaį¹ tesaį¹ devānaį¹ āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ taį¹ sabbaį¹ khepetvā tasmiį¹yeva bhave parinibbāyati. But a disciple of the Buddha stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then theyā€™re extinguished in that very life.

Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, viseso ayaį¹ adhippayāso idaį¹ nānākaraį¹‡aį¹ sutavato ariyasāvakassa assutavatā puthujjanena, yadidaį¹ gatiyā upapattiyā. This is the difference between a learned noble disciple and an unlearned ordinary person as regards their place of rebirth.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo sabbaso ākāsānaƱcāyatanaį¹ samatikkamma ā€˜anantaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡anā€™ti viƱƱāį¹‡aƱcāyatanaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Furthermore, a person, going totally beyond the dimension of infinite space, aware that ā€˜consciousness is infiniteā€™, enters and remains in the dimension of infinite consciousness.

So tadassādeti taį¹ nikāmeti tena ca vittiį¹ āpajjati, tatra į¹­hito tadadhimutto tabbahulavihārÄ« aparihÄ«no kālaį¹ kurumāno viƱƱāį¹‡aƱcāyatanÅ«pagānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying. ViƱƱāį¹‡aƱcāyatanÅ«pagānaį¹, bhikkhave, devānaį¹ cattārÄ«saį¹ kappasahassāni āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹. The lifespan of the gods of infinite consciousness is forty thousand eons.

Tattha puthujjano yāvatāyukaį¹ į¹­hatvā yāvatakaį¹ tesaį¹ devānaį¹ āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ taį¹ sabbaį¹ khepetvā nirayampi gacchati tiracchānayonimpi gacchati pettivisayampi gacchati. Furthermore, a person, going totally beyond the dimension of infinite consciousness, aware that ā€˜there is nothing at allā€™, enters and remains in the dimension of nothingness.

So tadassādeti taį¹ nikāmeti tena ca vittiį¹ āpajjati, tatra į¹­hito tadadhimutto tabbahulavihārÄ« aparihÄ«no kālaį¹ kurumāno ākiƱcaƱƱāyatanÅ«pagānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati.
