Vipattisampadāsutta Failures and Accomplishments

ā€œTisso imā, bhikkhave, vipattiyo. ā€œMendicants, there are three failures.

Katamā tisso? What three?

SÄ«lavipatti, cittavipatti, diį¹­į¹­hivipatti. Failure in ethics, mind, and view.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, sīlavipatti? And what is failure in ethics?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāį¹‡ÄtipātÄ« hoti, adinnādāyÄ« hoti, kāmesumicchācārÄ« hoti, musāvādÄ« hoti, pisuį¹‡avāco hoti, pharusavāco hoti, samphappalāpÄ« hoti. Itā€™s when someone kills living creatures, steals, commits sexual misconduct, and uses speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sÄ«lavipatti. This is called ā€˜failure in ethicsā€™.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, cittavipatti? And what is failure in mind?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco abhijjhālu hoti byāpannacitto. Itā€™s when someone is covetous and malicious.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, cittavipatti. This is called ā€˜failure in mindā€™.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, diį¹­į¹­hivipatti? And what is failure in view?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti viparÄ«tadassano: Itā€™s when someone has wrong view, a distorted perspective, such as:

ā€˜natthi dinnaį¹, natthi yiį¹­į¹­haį¹, natthi hutaį¹, natthi sukatadukkaį¹­Änaį¹, kammānaį¹ phalaį¹ vipāko, natthi ayaį¹ loko, natthi paro loko, natthi mātā, natthi pitā, natthi sattā opapātikā, natthi loke samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Ä sammaggatā sammāpaį¹­ipannā ye imaƱca lokaį¹ paraƱca lokaį¹ sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā pavedentÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Thereā€™s no meaning in giving, sacrifice, or offerings. Thereā€™s no fruit or result of good and bad deeds. Thereā€™s no afterlife. Thereā€™s no such thing as mother and father, or beings that are reborn spontaneously. And thereā€™s no ascetic or brahmin who is rightly comported and rightly practiced, and who describes the afterlife after realizing it with their own insight.ā€™

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, diį¹­į¹­hivipatti. This is called ā€˜failure in viewā€™.

SÄ«lavipattihetu vā, bhikkhave, sattā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjanti; Some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell because of failure in ethics,

cittavipattihetu vā, bhikkhave, sattā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjanti; mind,

diį¹­į¹­hivipattihetu vā, bhikkhave, sattā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjanti. or view.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso vipattiyoti. These are the three failures.

Tisso imā, bhikkhave, sampadā. There are three accomplishments.

Katamā tisso? What three?

SÄ«lasampadā, cittasampadā, diį¹­į¹­hisampadā. Accomplishment in ethics, mind, and view.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, sīlasampadā? And what is accomplishment in ethics?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāį¹‡Ätipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti, adinnādānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācārā paį¹­ivirato hoti, musāvādā paį¹­ivirato hoti, pisuį¹‡Äya vācāya paį¹­ivirato hoti, pharusāya vācāya paį¹­ivirato hoti, samphappalāpā paį¹­ivirato hoti. Itā€™s when someone doesnā€™t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, or use speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, diį¹­į¹­hisampadā? And what is accomplishment in view?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco sammādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti aviparÄ«tadassano: Itā€™s when someone has right view, an undistorted perspective, such as:

ā€˜atthi dinnaį¹, atthi yiį¹­į¹­haį¹, atthi hutaį¹, atthi sukatadukkaį¹­Änaį¹ kammānaį¹ phalaį¹ vipāko, atthi ayaį¹ loko, atthi paro loko, atthi mātā, atthi pitā, atthi sattā opapātikā, atthi loke samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Ä sammaggatā sammāpaį¹­ipannā ye imaƱca lokaį¹ paraƱca lokaį¹ sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā pavedentÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜There is meaning in giving, sacrifice, and offerings. diį¹­į¹­hisampadāhetu vā, bhikkhave, sattā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjanti. or view.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso sampadāā€ti. These are the three accomplishments.ā€
