Apaį¹į¹akasutta Unfailing Dice
āTisso imÄ, bhikkhave, vipattiyo. āMendicants, there are three failures.
KatamÄ tisso? What three?
SÄ«lavipatti, cittavipatti, diį¹į¹hivipatti. Failure in ethics, mind, and view.
KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, sÄ«lavipatti? And what is failure in ethics?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ« hoti ā¦peā¦ samphappalÄpÄ« hoti. Itās when someone kills living creatures, steals, commits sexual misconduct, and uses speech thatās false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sÄ«lavipatti. This is called āfailure in ethicsā.
KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, cittavipatti? And what is failure in mind?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco abhijjhÄlu hoti byÄpannacitto. Itās when someone is covetous and malicious.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, cittavipatti. This is called āfailure in mindā.
KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, diį¹į¹hivipatti? And what is failure in view?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco micchÄdiį¹į¹hiko hoti viparÄ«tadassano: Itās when someone has wrong view, a distorted perspective, such as:
ānatthi dinnaį¹, natthi yiį¹į¹haį¹ ā¦peā¦ ye imaƱca lokaį¹ paraƱca lokaį¹ sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ pavedentÄ«āti. āThereās no meaning in giving, sacrifice, or offerings. Thereās no fruit or result of good and bad deeds. Thereās no afterlife. Thereās no such thing as mother and father, or beings that are reborn spontaneously. And thereās no ascetic or brahmin who is rightly comported and rightly practiced, and who describes the afterlife after realizing it with their own insight.ā

SÄ«lavipattihetu vÄ, bhikkhave ā¦peā¦ diį¹į¹hivipattihetu vÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjanti. Some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell because of failure in ethics, mind, or view.
SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, apaį¹į¹ako maį¹i uddhaį¹ khitto yena yeneva patiį¹į¹hÄti suppatiį¹į¹hitaį¹yeva patiį¹į¹hÄti; Itās like throwing unfailing dice: they always fall the right side up.
evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, sÄ«lavipattihetu vÄ sattÄ ā¦peā¦ upapajjanti. In the same way, some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell because of failure in ethics, mind, or view.
ImÄ kho, bhikkhave, tisso vipattiyoti. These are the three failures.
Tisso imÄ, bhikkhave, sampadÄ. There are three accomplishments.

SÄ«lasampadÄ, cittasampadÄ, diį¹į¹hisampadÄ. Accomplishment in ethics, mind, and view.

āatthi dinnaį¹, atthi yiį¹į¹haį¹ ā¦peā¦ ye imaƱca lokaį¹ paraƱca lokaį¹ sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ pavedentÄ«āti. āThere is meaning in giving, sacrifice, and offerings.
