Dutiyasoceyyasutta Purity (2nd)

ā€œTÄ«į¹‡imāni, bhikkhave, soceyyāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these three kinds of purity.

Katamāni tÄ«į¹‡i? What three?

Kāyasoceyyaį¹, vacÄ«soceyyaį¹, manosoceyyaį¹. Purity of body, speech, and mind.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, kāyasoceyyaį¹? And what is purity of body?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pāį¹‡Ätipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti, adinnādānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, abrahmacariyā paį¹­ivirato hoti. Itā€™s when a mendicant doesnā€™t kill living creatures, steal, or have sex.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, kāyasoceyyaį¹. This is called ā€˜purity of bodyā€™.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, vacÄ«soceyyaį¹? And what is purity of speech?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu musāvādā paį¹­ivirato hoti, pisuį¹‡Äya vācāya paį¹­ivirato hoti, pharusāya vācāya paį¹­ivirato hoti, samphappalāpā paį¹­ivirato hoti. Itā€™s when a mendicant doesnā€™t use speech thatā€™s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, vacÄ«soceyyaį¹. This is called ā€˜purity of speechā€™.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, manosoceyyaį¹? And what is purity of mind?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ kāmacchandaį¹: ā€˜atthi me ajjhattaį¹ kāmacchandoā€™ti pajānāti; asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ kāmacchandaį¹: ā€˜natthi me ajjhattaį¹ kāmacchandoā€™ti pajānāti; yathā ca anuppannassa kāmacchandassa uppādo hoti, taƱca pajānāti; yathā ca uppannassa kāmacchandassa pahānaį¹ hoti, taƱca pajānāti; yathā ca pahÄ«nassa kāmacchandassa āyatiį¹ anuppādo hoti, taƱca pajānāti; Itā€™s when a mendicant who has sensual desire in them understands ā€˜I have sensual desire in me.ā€™ When they donā€™t have sensual desire in them, they understand ā€˜I donā€™t have sensual desire in me.ā€™ They understand how sensual desire arises; how, when itā€™s already arisen, itā€™s given up; and how, once itā€™s given up, it doesnā€™t arise again in the future.

santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ byāpādaį¹: ā€˜atthi me ajjhattaį¹ byāpādoā€™ti pajānāti; asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ byāpādaį¹: ā€˜natthi me ajjhattaį¹ byāpādoā€™ti pajānāti; yathā ca anuppannassa byāpādassa uppādo hoti, taƱca pajānāti; yathā ca uppannassa byāpādassa pahānaį¹ hoti, taƱca pajānāti; yathā ca pahÄ«nassa byāpādassa āyatiį¹ anuppādo hoti, taƱca pajānāti; When they have ill will in them they understand ā€˜I have ill will in meā€™; and when they donā€™t have ill will in them they understand ā€˜I donā€™t have ill will in meā€™. They understand how ill will arises; how, when itā€™s already arisen, itā€™s given up; and how, once itā€™s given up, it doesnā€™t arise again in the future.

santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ thinamiddhaį¹: ā€˜atthi me ajjhattaį¹ thinamiddhanā€™ti pajānāti; asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ thinamiddhaį¹: ā€˜natthi me ajjhattaį¹ thinamiddhanā€™ti pajānāti; yathā ca anuppannassa thinamiddhassa uppādo hoti, taƱca pajānāti; yathā ca uppannassa thinamiddhassa pahānaį¹ hoti, taƱca pajānāti; yathā ca pahÄ«nassa thinamiddhassa āyatiį¹ anuppādo hoti, taƱca pajānāti; When they have dullness and drowsiness in them they understand ā€˜I have dullness and drowsiness in meā€™; and when they donā€™t have dullness and drowsiness in them they understand ā€˜I donā€™t have dullness and drowsiness in meā€™. They understand how dullness and drowsiness arise; how, when theyā€™ve already arisen, theyā€™re given up; and how, once theyā€™re given up, they donā€™t arise again in the future.

santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ uddhaccakukkuccaį¹: ā€˜atthi me ajjhattaį¹ uddhaccakukkuccanā€™ti pajānāti; asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ uddhaccakukkuccaį¹: ā€˜natthi me ajjhattaį¹ uddhaccakukkuccanā€™ti pajānāti; yathā ca anuppannassa uddhaccakukkuccassa uppādo hoti, taƱca pajānāti; yathā ca uppannassa uddhaccakukkuccassa pahānaį¹ hoti, taƱca pajānāti; yathā ca pahÄ«nassa uddhaccakukkuccassa āyatiį¹ anuppādo hoti, taƱca pajānāti; When they have restlessness and remorse in them they understand ā€˜I have restlessness and remorse in meā€™; and when they donā€™t have restlessness and remorse in them they understand ā€˜I donā€™t have restlessness and remorse in meā€™. They understand how restlessness and remorse arise; how, when theyā€™ve already arisen, theyā€™re given up; and how, once theyā€™re given up, they donā€™t arise again in the future.

santaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ vicikicchaį¹: ā€˜atthi me ajjhattaį¹ vicikicchāā€™ti pajānāti; asantaį¹ vā ajjhattaį¹ vicikicchaį¹: ā€˜natthi me ajjhattaį¹ vicikicchāā€™ti pajānāti; yathā ca anuppannāya vicikicchāya uppādo hoti, taƱca pajānāti; yathā ca uppannāya vicikicchāya pahānaį¹ hoti, taƱca pajānāti; yathā ca pahÄ«nāya vicikicchāya āyatiį¹ anuppādo hoti, taƱca pajānāti. When they have doubt in them they understand ā€˜I have doubt in meā€™; and when they donā€™t have doubt in them they understand ā€˜I donā€™t have doubt in meā€™. They understand how doubt arises; how, when itā€™s already arisen, itā€™s given up; and how, once itā€™s given up, it doesnā€™t arise again in the future.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, manosoceyyaį¹. This is called ā€˜purity of mindā€™.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tÄ«į¹‡i soceyyānÄ«ti. These are the three kinds of purity.

Kāyasuciį¹ vacÄ«suciį¹, Purity of body, purity of speech,

cetosuciį¹ anāsavaį¹; and undefiled purity of heart.

Suciį¹ soceyyasampannaį¹, A pure person, blessed with purity,

āhu ninhātapāpakanā€ti. has washed off all bad things, they say.ā€
