Dutiyaanuruddhasutta With Anuruddha (2nd)

Atha kho āyasmā anuruddho yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā sāriputtena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Venerable Anuruddha went up to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā anuruddho āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to him:

ā€œidhāhaį¹, āvuso sāriputta, dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena sahassaį¹ lokaį¹ olokemi. ā€œHereā€™s the thing, Reverend Sāriputta. With clairvoyance that is purified and surpasses the human, I survey the thousandfold galaxy.

Āraddhaį¹ kho pana me vÄ«riyaį¹ asallÄ«naį¹, upaį¹į¹hitā sati asammuį¹į¹hā, passaddho kāyo asāraddho, samāhitaį¹ cittaį¹ ekaggaį¹. My energy is roused up and unflagging, my mindfulness is established and lucid, my body is tranquil and undisturbed, and my mind is immersed in samādhi.

Atha ca pana me nānupādāya āsavehi cittaį¹ vimuccatÄ«ā€ti. But my mind is not freed from the defilements by not grasping.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ kho te, āvuso anuruddha, evaį¹ hoti: ā€œWell, Reverend Anuruddha, when you say:

ā€˜ahaį¹ dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena sahassaį¹ lokaį¹ volokemÄ«ā€™ti, idaį¹ te mānasmiį¹. ā€˜With clairvoyance that is purified and surpasses the human, I survey the thousandfold galaxy,ā€™ thatā€™s your conceit.

Yampi te, āvuso anuruddha, evaį¹ hoti: And when you say:

ā€˜Äraddhaį¹ kho pana me vÄ«riyaį¹ asallÄ«naį¹, upaį¹į¹hitā sati asammuį¹į¹hā, passaddho kāyo asāraddho, samāhitaį¹ cittaį¹ ekagganā€™ti, idaį¹ te uddhaccasmiį¹. ā€˜My energy is roused up and unflagging, my mindfulness is established and lucid, my body is tranquil and undisturbed, and my mind is immersed in samādhi,ā€™ thatā€™s your restlessness.

Yampi te, āvuso anuruddha, evaį¹ hoti: And when you say:

ā€˜atha ca pana me nānupādāya āsavehi cittaį¹ vimuccatÄ«ā€™ti, idaį¹ te kukkuccasmiį¹. ā€˜But my mind is not freed from the defilements by not grasping,ā€™ thatā€™s your remorse.

Sādhu vatāyasmā anuruddho ime tayo dhamme pahāya, ime tayo dhamme amanasikaritvā amatāya dhātuyā cittaį¹ upasaį¹haratÅ«ā€ti. It would be good to give up these three things. Ignore them and apply your mind to freedom from death.ā€

Atha kho āyasmā anuruddho aparena samayena ime tayo dhamme pahāya, ime tayo dhamme amanasikaritvā amatāya dhātuyā cittaį¹ upasaį¹hari. After some time Anuruddha gave up these three things. Ignoring them, he applied his mind to freedom from death.

Atha kho āyasmā anuruddho eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirassevaā€”yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ā€”brahmacariyapariyosānaį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. Then Anuruddha, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

ā€œKhÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€ti abbhaƱƱāsi. He understood: ā€œRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā€

AƱƱataro ca panāyasmā anuruddho arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And Venerable Anuruddha became one of the perfected.

Aį¹į¹hamaį¹.
