Vesārajjasutta Self-assured

ā€œCattārimāni, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa vesārajjāni, yehi vesārajjehi samannāgato tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. ā€œMendicants, a Realized One has four kinds of self-assurance. With these he claims the bullā€™s place, roars his lionā€™s roar in the assemblies, and turns the divine wheel.

Katamāni cattāri? What four?

ā€˜ā€œSammāsambuddhassa te paį¹­ijānato ime dhammā anabhisambuddhāā€ti tatra vata maį¹ samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā devo vā māro vā brahmā vā koci vā lokasmiį¹ sahadhammena paį¹­icodessatÄ«ā€™ti nimittametaį¹, bhikkhave, na samanupassāmi. I see no reason for anyoneā€”whether ascetic, brahmin, god, Māra, or the Divinity, or anyone else in the worldā€”to legitimately scold me, saying: ā€˜You claim to be a fully awakened Buddha, but you donā€™t understand these things.ā€™

Etamahaį¹, bhikkhave, nimittaį¹ asamanupassanto khemappatto abhayappatto vesārajjappatto viharāmi. Since I see no such reason, I live secure, fearless, and assured.

ā€˜ā€œKhÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa te paį¹­ijānato ime āsavā aparikkhÄ«į¹‡Äā€ti tatra vata maį¹ samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā devo vā māro vā brahmā vā koci vā lokasmiį¹ sahadhammena paį¹­icodessatÄ«ā€™ti nimittametaį¹, bhikkhave, na samanupassāmi. I see no reason for anyoneā€”whether ascetic, brahmin, god, Māra, or the Divinity, or anyone else in the worldā€”to legitimately scold me, saying: ā€˜You claim to have ended all defilements, but you still have these defilements.ā€™

Etamahaį¹, bhikkhave, nimittaį¹ asamanupassanto khemappatto abhayappatto vesārajjappatto viharāmi. Since I see no such reason, I live secure, fearless, and assured.

ā€˜ā€œYe kho pana te antarāyikā dhammā vuttā te paį¹­isevato nālaį¹ antarāyāyāā€ti tatra vata maį¹ samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā devo vā māro vā brahmā vā koci vā lokasmiį¹ sahadhammena paį¹­icodessatÄ«ā€™ti nimittametaį¹, bhikkhave, na samanupassāmi. I see no reason for anyoneā€”whether ascetic, brahmin, god, Māra, or the Divinity, or anyone else in the worldā€”to legitimately scold me, saying: ā€˜The acts that you say are obstructions are not really obstructions for the one who performs them.ā€™

Etamahaį¹, bhikkhave, nimittaį¹ asamanupassanto khemappatto abhayappatto vesārajjappatto viharāmi. Since I see no such reason, I live secure, fearless, and assured.

ā€˜ā€œYassa kho pana te atthāya dhammo desito so na niyyāti takkarassa sammā dukkhakkhayāyāā€ti tatra vata maį¹ samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā devo vā māro vā brahmā vā koci vā lokasmiį¹ sahadhammena paį¹­icodessatÄ«ā€™ti nimittametaį¹, bhikkhave, na samanupassāmi. I see no reason for anyoneā€”whether ascetic, brahmin, god, Māra, or the Divinity, or anyone else in the worldā€”to legitimately scold me, saying: ā€˜Though you teach that this teaching leads to the goal of the complete ending of suffering, it doesnā€™t lead there for one who practices it.ā€™

Etamahaį¹, bhikkhave, nimittaį¹ asamanupassanto khemappatto abhayappatto vesārajjappatto viharāmi. Since I see no such reason, I live secure, fearless, and assured.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri tathāgatassa vesārajjāni, yehi vesārajjehi samannāgato tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavattetÄ«ti. A Realized One has these four kinds of self-assurance. With these he claims the bullā€™s place, roars his lionā€™s roar in the assemblies, and turns the divine wheel.

Ye kecime vādapathā puthussitā, The various grounds for criticism

Yaį¹nissitā samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Ä ca; that ascetics and brahmins rely on

Tathāgataį¹ patvā na te bhavanti, vanish on reaching a Realized One,

Visāradaį¹ vādapathātivattaį¹. assured, gone beyond grounds for criticism.

Yo dhammacakkaį¹ abhibhuyya kevalÄ«, He rolls forth the Wheel of Dhamma as a consummate one,

Pavattayī sabbabhūtānukampī; complete, sympathetic for all living creatures.

Taį¹ tādisaį¹ devamanussaseį¹­į¹­haį¹, Sentient beings revere him, first among gods and humans,

Sattā namassanti bhavassa pāragunā€ti. who has gone beyond rebirth.ā€
