Padhānasutta Effort

ā€œCattārimāni, bhikkhave, sammappadhānāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these four right efforts.

Katamāni cattāri? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaį¹ pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ anuppādāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati; A mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities donā€™t arise.

uppannānaį¹ pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up.

anuppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ uppādāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise.

uppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ į¹­hitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripÅ«riyā chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are fulfilled by development.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri sammappadhānānīti. These are the four right efforts.

Sammappadhānā māradheyyābhibhÅ«tā, By rightly striving, theyā€™ve crushed Māraā€™s sovereignty;

Te asitā jātimaraį¹‡abhayassa pāragÅ«; unattached, theyā€™ve gone beyond the peril of birth and death.

Te tusitā jetvā māraį¹ savāhiniį¹ te anejā, Contented and unstirred, theyā€™ve vanquished Māra and his mount;

Sabbaį¹ namucibalaį¹ upātivattā te sukhitāā€ti. now theyā€™ve gone beyond all Namuciā€™s forces, theyā€™re happy.ā€
