Saį¹varasutta Restraint

ā€œCattārimāni, bhikkhave, padhānāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these four efforts.

Katamāni cattāri? What four?

Saį¹varappadhānaį¹, pahānappadhānaį¹, bhāvanāppadhānaį¹, anurakkhaį¹‡Äppadhānaį¹. The efforts to restrain, to give up, to develop, and to preserve.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saį¹varappadhānaį¹? And what, mendicants, is the effort to restrain?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunā rÅ«paį¹ disvā na nimittaggāhÄ« hoti nānubyaƱjanaggāhÄ«. When a mendicant sees a sight with their eyes, they donā€™t get caught up in the features and details.

Yatvādhikaraį¹‡amenaį¹ cakkhundriyaį¹ asaį¹vutaį¹ viharantaį¹ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuį¹, tassa saį¹varāya paį¹­ipajjati, rakkhati cakkhundriyaį¹, cakkhundriye saį¹varaį¹ āpajjati. If the faculty of sight were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, they practice restraint, protecting the faculty of sight, and achieving its restraint.

Sotena saddaį¹ sutvā ā€¦ When they hear a sound with their ears ā€¦

ghānena gandhaį¹ ghāyitvā ā€¦ When they smell an odor with their nose ā€¦

jivhāya rasaį¹ sāyitvā ā€¦ When they taste a flavor with their tongue ā€¦

kāyena phoį¹­į¹­habbaį¹ phusitvā ā€¦ When they feel a touch with their body ā€¦

manasā dhammaį¹ viƱƱāya na nimittaggāhÄ« hoti nānubyaƱjanaggāhÄ«, When they know an idea with their mind, they donā€™t get caught up in the features and details.

yatvādhikaraį¹‡amenaį¹ manindriyaį¹ asaį¹vutaį¹ viharantaį¹ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuį¹, tassa saį¹varāya paį¹­ipajjati, rakkhati manindriyaį¹, manindriye saį¹varaį¹ āpajjati. If the faculty of mind were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, they practice restraint, protecting the faculty of mind, and achieving its restraint.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannaį¹ kāmavitakkaį¹ nādhivāseti pajahati vinodeti byantÄ«karoti anabhāvaį¹ gameti; Itā€™s when a mendicant doesnā€™t tolerate a sensual,

uppannaį¹ byāpādavitakkaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ malicious,

uppannaį¹ vihiį¹sāvitakkaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ or cruel thought thatā€™s arisen, but gives it up, gets rid of it, eliminates it, and obliterates it.

uppannuppanne pāpake akusale dhamme nādhivāseti pajahati vinodeti byantÄ«karoti anabhāvaį¹ gameti. They donā€™t tolerate any bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen, but give them up, get rid of them, eliminate them, and obliterate them.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, pahānappadhānaį¹. This is called the effort to give up.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, bhāvanāppadhānaį¹? And what, mendicants, is the effort to develop?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹, Itā€™s when a mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness,

dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti ā€¦ investigation of principles,

vÄ«riyasambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti ā€¦ energy,

pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti ā€¦ rapture,

passaddhisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti ā€¦ tranquility,

samādhisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti ā€¦ immersion,

upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹. and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhāvanāppadhānaį¹. This is called the effort to develop.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, anurakkhaį¹‡Äppadhānaį¹? And what, mendicants, is the effort to preserve?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannaį¹ bhaddakaį¹ samādhinimittaį¹ anurakkhati aį¹­į¹­hikasaƱƱaį¹ puįø·avakasaƱƱaį¹ vinÄ«lakasaƱƱaį¹ vicchiddakasaƱƱaį¹ uddhumātakasaƱƱaį¹. Itā€™s when a mendicant preserves a meditation subject thatā€™s a fine basis of immersion: the perception of a skeleton, a worm-infested corpse, a livid corpse, a split open corpse, or a bloated corpse.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, anurakkhaį¹‡Äppadhānaį¹. This is called the effort to preserve.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri padhānānīti. These are the four efforts.

Saį¹varo ca pahānaƱca, Restraint and giving up,

bhāvanā anurakkhaį¹‡Ä; development and preservation:

Ete padhānā cattāro, these are the four efforts

desitādiccabandhunā; taught by the kinsman of the Sun.

Yehi bhikkhu idhātāpī, Any mendicant who keenly applies these

khayaį¹ dukkhassa pāpuį¹‡eā€ti. may attain the ending of suffering.ā€
