āCattÄrimÄni, bhikkhave, padhÄnÄni. āMendicants, there are these four efforts.
KatamÄni cattÄri? What four?
Saį¹varappadhÄnaį¹, pahÄnappadhÄnaį¹, bhÄvanÄppadhÄnaį¹, anurakkhaį¹ÄppadhÄnaį¹. The efforts to restrain, to give up, to develop, and to preserve.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saį¹varappadhÄnaį¹? And what, mendicants, is the effort to restrain?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunÄ rÅ«paį¹ disvÄ na nimittaggÄhÄ« hoti nÄnubyaƱjanaggÄhÄ«. When a mendicant sees a sight with their eyes, they donāt get caught up in the features and details.
YatvÄdhikaraį¹amenaį¹ cakkhundriyaį¹ asaį¹vutaį¹ viharantaį¹ abhijjhÄdomanassÄ pÄpakÄ akusalÄ dhammÄ anvÄssaveyyuį¹, tassa saį¹varÄya paį¹ipajjati, rakkhati cakkhundriyaį¹, cakkhundriye saį¹varaį¹ Äpajjati. If the faculty of sight were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, they practice restraint, protecting the faculty of sight, and achieving its restraint.

manasÄ dhammaį¹ viƱƱÄya na nimittaggÄhÄ« hoti nÄnubyaƱjanaggÄhÄ«, When they know an idea with their mind, they donāt get caught up in the features and details.
yatvÄdhikaraį¹amenaį¹ manindriyaį¹ asaį¹vutaį¹ viharantaį¹ abhijjhÄdomanassÄ pÄpakÄ akusalÄ dhammÄ anvÄssaveyyuį¹, tassa saį¹varÄya paį¹ipajjati, rakkhati manindriyaį¹, manindriye saį¹varaį¹ Äpajjati. If the faculty of mind were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannaį¹ kÄmavitakkaį¹ nÄdhivÄseti pajahati vinodeti byantÄ«karoti anabhÄvaį¹ gameti; Itās when a mendicant doesnāt tolerate a sensual,
uppannaį¹ byÄpÄdavitakkaį¹ ā¦peā¦ malicious,
uppannaį¹ vihiį¹sÄvitakkaį¹ ā¦peā¦ or cruel thought thatās arisen, but gives it up, gets rid of it, eliminates it, and obliterates it.
uppannuppanne pÄpake akusale dhamme nÄdhivÄseti pajahati vinodeti byantÄ«karoti anabhÄvaį¹ gameti. They donāt tolerate any bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen, but give them up, get rid of them, eliminate them, and obliterate them.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, bhÄvanÄppadhÄnaį¹? And what, mendicants, is the effort to develop?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satisambojjhaį¹
gaį¹ bhÄveti vivekanissitaį¹ virÄganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹Ämiį¹, Itās when a mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness,
dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹
gaį¹ bhÄveti ā¦ investigation of principles,
vÄ«riyasambojjhaį¹
gaį¹ bhÄveti ā¦ energy,
pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹
gaį¹ bhÄveti ā¦ rapture,
passaddhisambojjhaį¹
gaį¹ bhÄveti ā¦ tranquility,
samÄdhisambojjhaį¹
gaį¹ bhÄveti ā¦ immersion,
upekkhÄsambojjhaį¹
gaį¹ bhÄveti vivekanissitaį¹ virÄganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹Ämiį¹. and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.
Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhÄvanÄppadhÄnaį¹. This is called the effort to develop.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, anurakkhaį¹ÄppadhÄnaį¹? And what, mendicants, is the effort to preserve?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannaį¹ bhaddakaį¹ samÄdhinimittaį¹ anurakkhati aį¹į¹hikasaƱƱaį¹ puįø·avakasaƱƱaį¹ vinÄ«lakasaƱƱaį¹ vicchiddakasaƱƱaį¹ uddhumÄtakasaƱƱaį¹. Itās when a mendicant preserves a meditation subject thatās a fine basis of immersion: the perception of a skeleton, a worm-infested corpse, a livid corpse, a split open corpse, or a bloated corpse.
Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, anurakkhaį¹ÄppadhÄnaį¹. This is called the effort to preserve.
ImÄni kho, bhikkhave, cattÄri padhÄnÄnÄ«ti. These are the four efforts.
Saį¹varo ca pahÄnaƱca, Restraint and giving up,
bhÄvanÄ anurakkhaį¹Ä; development and preservation:
Ete padhÄnÄ cattÄro, these are the four efforts
desitÄdiccabandhunÄ; taught by the kinsman of the Sun.
Yehi bhikkhu idhÄtÄpÄ«, Any mendicant who keenly applies these
khayaį¹ dukkhassa pÄpuį¹eāti. may attain the ending of suffering.ā
