Brahmacariyasutta The Spiritual Life

ā€œNayidaį¹, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaį¹ vussati janakuhanatthaį¹, na janalapanatthaį¹, na lābhasakkārasilokānisaį¹satthaį¹, na itivādappamokkhānisaį¹satthaį¹, na ā€˜iti maį¹ jano jānātÅ«ā€™ti. ā€œMendicants, this spiritual life is not lived for the sake of deceiving people or flattering them, nor for the benefit of possessions, honor, or popularity, nor for the benefit of winning debates, nor thinking, ā€˜So let people know about me!ā€™

Atha kho idaį¹, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaį¹ vussati saį¹varatthaį¹ pahānatthaį¹ virāgatthaį¹ nirodhatthanti. This spiritual life is lived for the sake of restraint, giving up, fading away, and cessation.

Saį¹varatthaį¹ pahānatthaį¹, The Buddha taught the spiritual life

brahmacariyaį¹ anÄ«tihaį¹; not because of tradition,

Adesayi so bhagavā, but for the sake of restraint and giving up,

nibbānogadhagāminaį¹; and because it culminates in extinguishment.

Esa maggo mahantehi, This is the path followed by the great souls,

anuyāto mahesibhi. the great seers.

Ye ca taį¹ paį¹­ipajjanti, Those who practice it

yathā buddhena desitaį¹; as it was taught by the Buddha,

Dukkhassantaį¹ karissanti, doing the teacherā€™s bidding,

satthusāsanakārinoā€ti. make an end of suffering.ā€
