Vassakārasutta With Vassakāra

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivāpe. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā€™ feeding ground.

Atha kho vassakāro brāhmaį¹‡o magadhamahāmatto yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Vassakāra the brahmin, a chief minister of Magadha, went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho vassakāro brāhmaį¹‡o magadhamahāmatto bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

ā€œCatÅ«hi kho mayaį¹, bho gotama, dhammehi samannāgataį¹ mahāpaƱƱaį¹ mahāpurisaį¹ paƱƱāpema. ā€œWorthy Gotama, when someone has four qualities we describe him as a great man with great wisdom.

Katamehi catūhi? What four?

Idha, bho gotama, bahussuto hoti tassa tasseva sutajātassa They are very learned in diverse fields of learning.

tassa tasseva kho pana bhāsitassa atthaį¹ jānāti: ā€˜ayaį¹ imassa bhāsitassa attho, ayaį¹ imassa bhāsitassa atthoā€™ti. They understand the meaning of diverse statements, saying: ā€˜This is what that statement means; that is what this statement means.ā€™

Satimā kho pana hoti cirakatampi cirabhāsitampi saritā anussaritā They are mindful, able to remember and recollect what was said and done long ago.

yāni kho pana tāni gahaį¹­į¹­hakāni kiį¹…karaį¹‡Ä«yāni, tattha dakkho hoti analaso, tatrupāyāya vÄ«maį¹sāya samannāgato alaį¹ kātuį¹ alaį¹ saį¹vidhātuį¹. They are deft and tireless in household duties, understanding how to go about things in order to complete and organize the work.

Imehi kho mayaį¹, bho gotama, catÅ«hi dhammehi samannāgataį¹ mahāpaƱƱaį¹ mahāpurisaį¹ paƱƱāpema. When someone has these four qualities we describe him as a great man with great wisdom.

Sace me, bho gotama, anumoditabbaį¹ anumodatu me bhavaį¹ gotamo; If the worthy Gotama agrees with me, please say so.

sace pana me, bho gotama, paį¹­ikkositabbaį¹ paį¹­ikkosatu me bhavaį¹ gotamoā€ti. If he disagrees, please say so.ā€

ā€œNeva kho tyāhaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, anumodāmi na paį¹­ikkosāmi. ā€œBrahmin, I neither agree nor disagree with you,

CatÅ«hi kho ahaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, dhammehi samannāgataį¹ mahāpaƱƱaį¹ mahāpurisaį¹ paƱƱāpemi. but when someone has four qualities I describe him as a great man with great wisdom.

Katamehi catūhi? What four?

Idha, brāhmaį¹‡a, bahujanahitāya paį¹­ipanno hoti bahujanasukhāya; Itā€™s when someone practices for the welfare and happiness of the people.

bahuā€™ssa janatā ariye Ʊāye patiį¹­į¹­hāpitā, yadidaį¹ kalyāį¹‡adhammatā kusaladhammatā. Theyā€™ve established many people in the noble system, that is, the principles of goodness and skillfulness.

So yaį¹ vitakkaį¹ ākaį¹…khati vitakketuį¹ taį¹ vitakkaį¹ vitakketi, yaį¹ vitakkaį¹ nākaį¹…khati vitakketuį¹ na taį¹ vitakkaį¹ vitakketi; They think what they want to think, and donā€™t think what they donā€™t want to think.

yaį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ ākaį¹…khati saį¹…kappetuį¹ taį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ saį¹…kappeti, yaį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ nākaį¹…khati saį¹…kappetuį¹ na taį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ saį¹…kappeti. They consider what they want to consider, and donā€™t consider what they donā€™t want to consider.

Iti cetovasippatto hoti vitakkapathe. Thus they have achieved mental mastery of the paths of thought.

Catunnaį¹ jhānānaį¹ ābhicetasikānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­hadhammasukhavihārānaį¹ nikāmalābhÄ« hoti akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ«. They get the four absorptionsā€”blissful meditations in this life that belong to the higher mindā€”when they want, without trouble or difficulty.

Āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Neva kho tyāhaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, anumodāmi na pana paį¹­ikkosāmi. Brahmin, I neither agree nor disagree with you,

Imehi kho ahaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, catÅ«hi dhammehi samannāgataį¹ mahāpaƱƱaį¹ mahāpurisaį¹ paƱƱāpemÄ«ā€ti. but when someone has these four qualities I describe him as a great man with great wisdom.ā€

ā€œAcchariyaį¹, bho gotama, abbhutaį¹, bho gotama. ā€œItā€™s incredible, worthy Gotama, itā€™s amazing!

Yāva subhāsitaƱcidaį¹ bhotā gotamena. How well said this was by the worthy Gotama!

Imehi ca mayaį¹, bho gotama, catÅ«hi dhammehi samannāgataį¹ bhavantaį¹ gotamaį¹ dhārema; And we will remember the worthy Gotama as someone who has these four qualities.

bhavaƱhi gotamo bahujanahitāya paį¹­ipanno bahujanasukhāya; For the worthy Gotama practices for the welfare and happiness of the people ā€¦

bahu te janatā ariye Ʊāye patiį¹­į¹­hāpitā, yadidaį¹ kalyāį¹‡adhammatā kusaladhammatā.

BhavaƱhi gotamo yaį¹ vitakkaį¹ ākaį¹…khati vitakketuį¹ taį¹ vitakkaį¹ vitakketi, yaį¹ vitakkaį¹ nākaį¹…khati vitakketuį¹ na taį¹ vitakkaį¹ vitakketi, yaį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ ākaį¹…khati saį¹…kappetuį¹ taį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ saį¹…kappeti, yaį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ nākaį¹…khati saį¹…kappetuį¹ na taį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ saį¹…kappeti.

BhavaƱhi gotamo cetovasippatto vitakkapathe. The worthy Gotama has achieved mental mastery of the paths of thought.

BhavaƱhi gotamo catunnaį¹ jhānānaį¹ ābhicetasikānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­hadhammasukhavihārānaį¹ nikāmalābhÄ« akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ«. The worthy Gotama gets the four absorptions ā€¦ when he wants, without trouble or difficulty.

BhavaƱhi gotamo āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatÄ«ā€ti. The worthy Gotama has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. He lives having realized it with his own insight due to the ending of defilements.ā€

ā€œAddhā kho tyāhaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, āsajja upanÄ«ya vācā bhāsitā. ā€œYour words are clearly invasive and intrusive, brahmin.

Api ca tyāhaį¹ byākarissāmi: Nevertheless, I will answer you.

ā€˜ahaƱhi, brāhmaį¹‡a, bahujanahitāya paį¹­ipanno bahujanasukhāya; For I do practice for the welfare and happiness of the people ā€¦

bahu me janatā ariye Ʊāye patiį¹­į¹­hāpitā, yadidaį¹ kalyāį¹‡adhammatā kusaladhammatā.

AhaƱhi, brāhmaį¹‡a, yaį¹ vitakkaį¹ ākaį¹…khāmi vitakketuį¹ taį¹ vitakkaį¹ vitakkemi, yaį¹ vitakkaį¹ nākaį¹…khāmi vitakketuį¹ na taį¹ vitakkaį¹ vitakkemi, yaį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ ākaį¹…khāmi saį¹…kappetuį¹ taį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ saį¹…kappemi, yaį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ nākaį¹…khāmi saį¹…kappetuį¹ na taį¹ saį¹…kappaį¹ saį¹…kappemi.

AhaƱhi, brāhmaį¹‡a, cetovasippatto vitakkapathe. I have achieved mental mastery of the paths of thought.

AhaƱhi, brāhmaį¹‡a, catunnaį¹ jhānānaį¹ ābhicetasikānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­hadhammasukhavihārānaį¹ nikāmalābhÄ« akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ«. I do get the four absorptions ā€¦ when I want, without trouble or difficulty.

AhaƱhi, brāhmaį¹‡a, āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharāmÄ«ā€™ti. I have realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. I live having realized it with my own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Yo vedi sabbasattānaį¹, He discovered release from the snare of death

maccupāsappamocanaį¹; for all beings,

Hitaį¹ devamanussānaį¹, and explained the system of the teaching

Ʊāyaį¹ dhammaį¹ pakāsayi; for the welfare of gods and humans.

Yaį¹ ve disvā ca sutvā ca, When they see him or hear him,

pasīdanti bahū janā. many people become confident.

Maggāmaggassa kusalo, He is skilled in what is the path and what is not the path,

Katakicco anāsavo; he has completed the task and is free of defilements.

Buddho antimasārīro, The Buddha, bearing his final body,

MahāpaƱƱo mahāpurisoti vuccatÄ«ā€ti. is called ā€˜a great man, of great wisdomā€™.ā€
