Aparihāniyasutta Non-decline

ā€œCatÅ«hi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu abhabbo parihānāya nibbānasseva santike. ā€œMendicants, a mendicant who has four qualities canā€™t decline, and has drawn near to extinguishment.

Katamehi catūhi? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«lasampanno hoti, indriyesu guttadvāro hoti, bhojane mattaĆ±Ć±Å« hoti, jāgariyaį¹ anuyutto hoti. A mendicant is accomplished in ethics, guards the sense doors, eats in moderation, and is dedicated to wakefulness.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlasampanno hoti? And how is a mendicant accomplished in ethics?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«lavā hoti pātimokkhasaį¹varasaį¹vuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno aį¹‡umattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvÄ«, samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu. Itā€™s when a mendicant is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyā€™ve undertaken.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«lasampanno hoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant is accomplished in ethics.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu indriyesu guttadvāro hoti? And how does a mendicant guard the sense doors?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunā rÅ«paį¹ disvā na nimittaggāhÄ« hoti nānubyaƱjanaggāhÄ«. When a mendicant sees a sight with their eyes, they donā€™t get caught up in the features and details.

Yatvādhikaraį¹‡amenaį¹ cakkhundriyaį¹ asaį¹vutaį¹ viharantaį¹ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuį¹, tassa saį¹varāya paį¹­ipajjati; rakkhati cakkhundriyaį¹; cakkhundriye saį¹varaį¹ āpajjati. If the faculty of sight were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, they practice restraint, protecting the faculty of sight, and achieving restraint over it.

ghānena gandhaį¹ ghāyitvā ā€¦ Smelling an odor with their nose ā€¦

jivhāya rasaį¹ sāyitvā ā€¦ Tasting a flavor with their tongue ā€¦

kāyena phoį¹­į¹­habbaį¹ phusitvā ā€¦ Feeling a touch with their body ā€¦

manasā dhammaį¹ viƱƱāya na nimittaggāhÄ« hoti nānubyaƱjanaggāhÄ«. Knowing an idea with their mind, they donā€™t get caught up in the features and details.

Yatvādhikaraį¹‡amenaį¹ manindriyaį¹ asaį¹vutaį¹ viharantaį¹ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuį¹, tassa saį¹varāya paį¹­ipajjati; rakkhati manindriyaį¹; manindriye saį¹varaį¹ āpajjati. If the faculty of mind were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paį¹­isaį¹…khā yoniso āhāraį¹ āhāreti: Itā€™s when a mendicant reflects rationally on the food that they eat:

ā€˜neva davāya na madāya na maį¹‡įøanāya na vibhÅ«sanāya; yāvadeva imassa kāyassa į¹­hitiyā yāpanāya vihiį¹sÅ«paratiyā brahmacariyānuggahāya. Iti purāį¹‡aƱca vedanaį¹ paį¹­ihaį¹…khāmi, navaƱca vedanaį¹ na uppādessāmi, yātrā ca me bhavissati, anavajjatā ca phāsuvihāro cāā€™ti. ā€˜Not for fun, indulgence, adornment, or decoration, but only to sustain this body, to avoid harm, and to support spiritual practice. In this way, I shall put an end to old discomfort and not give rise to new discomfort, and I will have the means to keep going, blamelessness, and a comfortable abiding.ā€™

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu jāgariyaį¹ anuyutto hoti? And how is a mendicant dedicated to wakefulness?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu divasaį¹ caį¹…kamena nisajjāya āvaraį¹‡Ä«yehi dhammehi cittaį¹ parisodheti; Itā€™s when a mendicant practices walking and sitting meditation by day, purifying their mind from obstacles.

rattiyā paį¹­hamaį¹ yāmaį¹ caį¹…kamena nisajjāya āvaraį¹‡Ä«yehi dhammehi cittaį¹ parisodheti; In the first watch of the night, they continue to practice walking and sitting meditation.

rattiyā majjhimaį¹ yāmaį¹ dakkhiį¹‡ena passena sÄ«haseyyaį¹ kappeti, pāde pādaį¹ accādhāya, sato sampajāno uį¹­į¹­hānasaƱƱaį¹ manasi karitvā; In the middle watch, they lie down in the lionā€™s postureā€”on the right side, placing one foot on top of the otherā€”mindful and aware, and focused on the time of getting up.

rattiyā pacchimaį¹ yāmaį¹ paccuį¹­į¹­hāya caį¹…kamena nisajjāya āvaraį¹‡Ä«yehi dhammehi cittaį¹ parisodheti. In the last watch, they get up and continue to practice walking and sitting meditation, purifying their mind from obstacles.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu jāgariyaį¹ anuyutto hoti. This is how a mendicant is dedicated to wakefulness.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catÅ«hi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu abhabbo parihānāya, nibbānasseva santiketi. A mendicant who has these four qualities canā€™t decline, and has drawn near to extinguishment.

SÄ«le patiį¹­į¹­hito bhikkhu, Established in ethics,

indriyesu ca saį¹vuto; restrained in the sense faculties,

Bhojanamhi ca mattaĆ±Ć±Å«, eating in moderation,

jāgariyaį¹ anuyuƱjati. and dedicated to wakefulness;

Evaį¹ vihārÄ« ātāpÄ«, a mendicant lives like this, with keen energy,

ahorattamatandito; tireless all night and day,

Bhāvayaį¹ kusalaį¹ dhammaį¹, developing skillful qualities,

yogakkhemassa pattiyā. for the sake of sanctuary from the yoke.

Appamādarato bhikkhu, A mendicant who loves to be diligent,

pamāde bhayadassi vā; seeing fear in negligence,

Abhabbo parihānāya, canā€™t decline,

nibbānasseva santikeā€ti. and has drawn near to extinguishment.ā€
