Patilīnasutta Withdrawn

ā€œPanuį¹‡į¹‡apaccekasacco, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ā€˜samavayasaį¹­į¹­hesano passaddhakāyasaį¹…khāro patilÄ«noā€™ti vuccati. ā€œMendicants, a mendicant has eliminated idiosyncratic interpretations of the truth, has totally given up searching, has stilled the physical process, and is said to be ā€˜withdrawnā€™.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu panuį¹‡į¹‡apaccekasacco hoti? And how has a mendicant eliminated idiosyncratic interpretations of the truth?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno yāni tāni puthusamaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Änaį¹ puthupaccekasaccāni, seyyathidaį¹ā€”Different ascetics and brahmins have different idiosyncratic interpretations of the truth. For example:

sassato lokoti vā, asassato lokoti vā, antavā lokoti vā, anantavā lokoti vā, taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranti vā, aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranti vā, hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äti vā, na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äti vā, hoti ca na ca hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äti vā, neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraį¹ maraį¹‡Äti vā; the cosmos is eternal, or not eternal, or finite, or infinite; the soul and the body are the same thing, or they are different things; after death, a realized one still exists, or no longer exists, or both still exists and no longer exists, or neither still exists nor no longer exists.

sabbāni tāni nuį¹‡į¹‡Äni honti panuį¹‡į¹‡Äni cattāni vantāni muttāni pahÄ«nāni paį¹­inissaį¹­į¹­hāni. A mendicant has dispelled, eliminated, thrown out, rejected, let go of, given up, and relinquished all these.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu panuį¹‡į¹‡apaccekasacco hoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant has eliminated idiosyncratic interpretations of the truth.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu samavayasaį¹­į¹­hesano hoti? And how has a mendicant totally given up searching?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno kāmesanā pahÄ«nā hoti, bhavesanā pahÄ«nā hoti, brahmacariyesanā paį¹­ippassaddhā. Itā€™s when theyā€™ve given up searching for sensual pleasures, for continued existence, and for a spiritual path.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu samavayasaį¹­į¹­hesano hoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant has totally given up searching.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu passaddhakāyasaį¹…khāro hoti? And how has a mendicant stilled the physical process?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamā adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Itā€™s when, giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu passaddhakāyasaį¹…khāro hoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant has stilled the physical process.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu patilīno hoti? And how is a mendicant withdrawn?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno asmimāno pahÄ«no hoti ucchinnamÅ«lo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaį¹…kato āyatiį¹ anuppādadhammo. Itā€™s when theyā€™ve given up the conceit ā€˜I amā€™, cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, obliterated it, so itā€™s unable to arise in the future.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu patilÄ«no hoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant is withdrawn.

Panuį¹‡į¹‡apaccekasacco, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ā€˜samavayasaį¹­į¹­hesano passaddhakāyasaį¹…khāro patilÄ«noā€™ti vuccatÄ«ti. A mendicant has eliminated idiosyncratic interpretations of the truth, has totally given up searching, has stilled the physical process, and is said to be ā€˜withdrawnā€™.

Kāmesanā bhavesanā, The search for sensual pleasures, for a good rebirth,

brahmacariyesanā saha; and the search for a spiritual path;

Iti saccaparāmāso, the holding tight to the thought, ā€˜this is the truthā€™,

diį¹­į¹­hiį¹­į¹­hānā samussayā. and the mass of grounds for viewsā€”

Sabbarāgavirattassa, for one detached from all lusts,

taį¹‡hakkhayavimuttino; freed by the ending of craving,

Esanā paį¹­inissaį¹­į¹­hā, that searching has been relinquished,

diį¹­į¹­hiį¹­į¹­hānā samÅ«hatā. and those viewpoints eradicated.

Sa ve santo sato bhikkhu, That mendicant is peaceful and mindful,

passaddho aparājito; a tranquil champion.

Mānābhisamayā buddho, And when theyā€™re awakened by comprehending conceit,

patilÄ«noti vuccatÄ«ā€ti. theyā€™re called ā€˜withdrawnā€™.ā€
