Samādhibhāvanāsutta Ways of Developing Immersion Further

ā€œCatasso imā, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā. ā€œMendicants, there are these four ways of developing immersion further.

Katamā catasso? What four?

Atthi, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā diį¹­į¹­hadhammasukhavihārāya saį¹vattati; There is a way of developing immersion further that leads to blissful meditation in this life.

atthi, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā Ʊāį¹‡adassanappaį¹­ilābhāya saį¹vattati; There is a way of developing immersion further that leads to gaining knowledge and vision.

atthi, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā satisampajaƱƱāya saį¹vattati; There is a way of developing immersion further that leads to mindfulness and awareness.

atthi, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā āsavānaį¹ khayāya saį¹vattati. There is a way of developing immersion further that leads to the ending of defilements.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā diį¹­į¹­hadhammasukhavihārāya saį¹vattati? And what is the way of developing immersion further that leads to blissful meditation in this life?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi ā€¦peā€¦ catutthaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Itā€™s when a mendicant, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption ā€¦ second absorption ā€¦ third absorption ā€¦ fourth absorption.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā diį¹­į¹­hadhammasukhavihārāya saį¹vattati. This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to blissful meditation in this life.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā Ʊāį¹‡adassanappaį¹­ilābhāya saį¹vattati? And what is the way of developing immersion further that leads to gaining knowledge and vision?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ālokasaƱƱaį¹ manasi karoti, divāsaƱƱaį¹ adhiį¹­į¹­hātiā€”Itā€™s when a mendicant applies their mind to the perception of light, focusing on the perception of day:

yathā divā tathā rattiį¹, yathā rattiį¹ tathā divā. as by day, so by night; as by night, so by day.

Iti vivaį¹­ena cetasā apariyonaddhena sappabhāsaį¹ cittaį¹ bhāveti. And so, with an open and unenveloped heart, they develop a mind thatā€™s full of radiance.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā Ʊāį¹‡adassanappaį¹­ilābhāya saį¹vattati. This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to gaining knowledge and vision.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā satisampajaƱƱāya saį¹vattati? And what is the way of developing immersion further that leads to mindfulness and awareness?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno viditā vedanā uppajjanti, viditā upaį¹­į¹­hahanti, viditā abbhatthaį¹ gacchanti; Itā€™s when a mendicant knows feelings as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away.

viditā saƱƱā ā€¦peā€¦ viditā vitakkā uppajjanti, viditā upaį¹­į¹­hahanti, viditā abbhatthaį¹ gacchanti. They know perceptions as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away. They know thoughts as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā satisampajaƱƱāya saį¹vattati. This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to mindfulness and awareness.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā āsavānaį¹ khayāya saį¹vattati? And what is the way of developing immersion further that leads to the ending of defilements?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱcasu upādānakkhandhesu udayabbayānupassÄ« viharati: Itā€™s when a mendicant meditates observing rise and fall in the five grasping aggregates.

ā€˜iti rÅ«paį¹, iti rÅ«passa samudayo, iti rÅ«passa atthaį¹…gamo; ā€˜Such is form, such is the origin of form, such is the ending of form.

iti vedanā, iti vedanāya samudayo, iti vedanāya atthaį¹…gamo; Such is feeling, such is the origin of feeling, such is the ending of feeling.

iti saƱƱā, iti saƱƱāya samudayo, iti saƱƱāya atthaį¹…gamo; Such is perception, such is the origin of perception, such is the ending of perception.

iti saį¹…khārā, iti saį¹…khārānaį¹ samudayo, iti saį¹…khārānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamo; Such are choices, such is the origin of choices, such is the ending of choices.

iti viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹, iti viƱƱāį¹‡assa samudayo, iti viƱƱāį¹‡assa atthaį¹…gamoā€™ti. Such is consciousness, such is the origin of consciousness, such is the ending of consciousness.ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, samādhibhāvanā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā āsavānaį¹ khayāya saį¹vattati. This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to the ending of defilements.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, catasso samādhibhāvanā. These are the four ways of developing immersion further.

IdaƱca pana metaį¹, bhikkhave, sandhāya bhāsitaį¹ pārāyane puį¹‡į¹‡akapaƱhe: And it was in this connection that I said in ā€˜The Way to the Far Shoreā€™, in ā€˜The Questions of Puį¹‡į¹‡akaā€™:

ā€˜Saį¹…khāya lokasmiį¹ paroparāni, ā€˜Having appraised the world high and low,

YassiƱjitaį¹ natthi kuhiƱci loke; there is nothing in the world that disturbs them.

Santo vidhūmo anīgho nirāso, Peaceful, unclouded, untroubled, with no need for hope,

Atāri so jātijaranti brÅ«mÄ«ā€™ā€ti. theyā€™ve crossed over rebirth and old age, I declare.ā€™ā€
