SamÄdhibhÄvanÄsutta Ways of Developing Immersion Further
āCatasso imÄ, bhikkhave, samÄdhibhÄvanÄ. āMendicants, there are these four ways of developing immersion further.

Atthi, bhikkhave, samÄdhibhÄvanÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ diį¹į¹hadhammasukhavihÄrÄya saį¹vattati; There is a way of developing immersion further that leads to blissful meditation in this life.
atthi, bhikkhave, samÄdhibhÄvanÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ Ć±Äį¹adassanappaį¹ilÄbhÄya saį¹vattati; There is a way of developing immersion further that leads to gaining knowledge and vision.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vivicceva kÄmehi ā¦peā¦ catutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Itās when a mendicant, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption ā¦ second absorption ā¦ third absorption ā¦ fourth absorption.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, samÄdhibhÄvanÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ diį¹į¹hadhammasukhavihÄrÄya saį¹vattati. This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to blissful meditation in this life.
KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, samÄdhibhÄvanÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ Ć±Äį¹adassanappaį¹ilÄbhÄya saį¹vattati? And what is the way of developing immersion further that leads to gaining knowledge and vision?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ÄlokasaƱƱaį¹ manasi karoti, divÄsaƱƱaį¹ adhiį¹į¹hÄtiāItās when a mendicant applies their mind to the perception of light, focusing on the perception of day:
yathÄ divÄ tathÄ rattiį¹, yathÄ rattiį¹ tathÄ divÄ. as by day, so by night; as by night, so by day.
Iti vivaį¹ena cetasÄ apariyonaddhena sappabhÄsaį¹ cittaį¹ bhÄveti. And so, with an open and unenveloped heart, they develop a mind thatās full of radiance.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, samÄdhibhÄvanÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ Ć±Äį¹adassanappaį¹ilÄbhÄya saį¹vattati. This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to gaining knowledge and vision.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno viditÄ vedanÄ uppajjanti, viditÄ upaį¹į¹hahanti, viditÄ abbhatthaį¹ gacchanti; Itās when a mendicant knows feelings as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away.
viditÄ saĆ±Ć±Ä ā¦peā¦ viditÄ vitakkÄ uppajjanti, viditÄ upaį¹į¹hahanti, viditÄ abbhatthaį¹ gacchanti. They know perceptions as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away. They know thoughts as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, samÄdhibhÄvanÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ satisampajaƱƱÄya saį¹vattati. This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to mindfulness and awareness.
KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, samÄdhibhÄvanÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄya saį¹vattati? And what is the way of developing immersion further that leads to the ending of defilements?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱcasu upÄdÄnakkhandhesu udayabbayÄnupassÄ« viharati: Itās when a mendicant meditates observing rise and fall in the five grasping aggregates.
āiti rÅ«paį¹, iti rÅ«passa samudayo, iti rÅ«passa atthaį¹
gamo; āSuch is form, such is the origin of form, such is the ending of form.
iti vedanÄ, iti vedanÄya samudayo, iti vedanÄya atthaį¹
gamo; Such is feeling, such is the origin of feeling, such is the ending of feeling.
iti saƱƱÄ, iti saƱƱÄya samudayo, iti saƱƱÄya atthaį¹
gamo; Such is perception, such is the origin of perception, such is the ending of perception.

khÄrÄ, iti saį¹
khÄrÄnaį¹ samudayo, iti saį¹
khÄrÄnaį¹ atthaį¹
gamo; Such are choices, such is the origin of choices, such is the ending of choices.
iti viƱƱÄį¹aį¹, iti viƱƱÄį¹assa samudayo, iti viƱƱÄį¹assa atthaį¹
gamoāti. Such is consciousness, such is the origin of consciousness, such is the ending of consciousness.ā
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, samÄdhibhÄvanÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄya saį¹vattati. This is the way of developing immersion further that leads to the ending of defilements.
ImÄ kho, bhikkhave, catasso samÄdhibhÄvanÄ. These are the four ways of developing immersion further.
IdaƱca pana metaį¹, bhikkhave, sandhÄya bhÄsitaį¹ pÄrÄyane puį¹į¹akapaƱhe: And it was in this connection that I said in āThe Way to the Far Shoreā, in āThe Questions of Puį¹į¹akaā:
āSaį¹
khÄya lokasmiį¹ paroparÄni, āHaving appraised the world high and low,
YassiƱjitaį¹ natthi kuhiƱci loke; there is nothing in the world that disturbs them.
Santo vidhÅ«mo anÄ«gho nirÄso, Peaceful, unclouded, untroubled, with no need for hope,
AtÄri so jÄtijaranti brÅ«mÄ«āāti. theyāve crossed over rebirth and old age, I declare.āā
