DutiyapuƱƱābhisandasutta Overflowing Merit (2nd)

ā€œCattārome, bhikkhave, puƱƱābhisandā kusalābhisandā sukhassāhārā sovaggikā sukhavipākā saggasaį¹vattanikā iį¹­į¹­hāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saį¹vattanti. ā€œMendicants, there are these four kinds of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness. They nurture happiness and are conducive to heaven, ripening in happiness and leading to heaven. They lead to what is likable, desirable, agreeable, to welfare and happiness.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti: Itā€™s when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha:

ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāā€™ti. ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­hamo puƱƱābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro sovaggiko sukhavipāko saggasaį¹vattaniko iį¹­į¹­hāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saį¹vattati. This is the first kind of overflowing merit ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako dhamme aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti: Furthermore, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the teaching:

ā€˜svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiį¹­į¹­hiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜The teaching is well explained by the Buddhaā€”apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dutiyo puƱƱābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro sovaggiko sukhavipāko saggasaį¹vattaniko iį¹­į¹­hāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saį¹vattati. This is the second kind of overflowing merit ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saį¹…ghe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti: Furthermore, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Saį¹…gha:

ā€˜suppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, ujuppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, Ʊāyappaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, sāmÄ«cippaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, yadidaį¹ cattāri purisayugāni aį¹­į¹­ha purisapuggalā, esa bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiį¹‡eyyo aƱjalikaraį¹‡Ä«yo anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassāā€™ti. ā€˜The Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples is practicing the way thatā€™s good, sincere, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saį¹…gha of the Buddhaā€™s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, tatiyo puƱƱābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro sovaggiko sukhavipāko saggasaį¹vattaniko iį¹­į¹­hāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saį¹vattati. This is the third kind of overflowing merit ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannāgato hoti akhaį¹‡įøehi acchiddehi asabalehi akammāsehi bhujissehi viƱƱuppasatthehi aparāmaį¹­į¹­hehi samādhisaį¹vattanikehi. Furthermore, a noble discipleā€™s ethical conduct is loved by the noble ones, unbroken, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to immersion.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, catuttho puƱƱābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro sovaggiko sukhavipāko saggasaį¹vattaniko iį¹­į¹­hāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saį¹vattati. This is the fourth kind of overflowing merit ā€¦

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro puƱƱābhisandā kusalābhisandā sukhassāhārā sovaggikā sukhavipākā saggasaį¹vattanikā iį¹­į¹­hāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saį¹vattantÄ«ti. These are the four kinds of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness. They nurture happiness and are conducive to heaven, ripening in happiness and leading to heaven. They lead to what is likable, desirable, agreeable, to welfare and happiness.

Yassa saddhā tathāgate, Whoever has faith in the Realized One,

acalā suppatiį¹­į¹­hitā; unwavering and well grounded;

SÄ«laƱca yassa kalyāį¹‡aį¹, whose ethical conduct is good,

ariyakantaį¹ pasaį¹sitaį¹. praised and loved by the noble ones;

Saį¹…ghe pasādo yassatthi, who has confidence in the Saį¹…gha,

ujubhÅ«taƱca dassanaį¹; and correct view:

Adaliddoti taį¹ āhu, theyā€™re said to be prosperous,

amoghaį¹ tassa jÄ«vitaį¹. their life is not in vain.

Tasmā saddhaƱca sīlaƱca, So let the wise devote themselves

pasādaį¹ dhammadassanaį¹; to faith, ethical behavior,

AnuyuƱjetha medhāvī, confidence, and insight into the teaching,

saraį¹ buddhāna sāsananā€ti. remembering the instructions of the Buddhas.ā€
