Paį¹­hamasaį¹vāsasutta Living Together (1st)

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā antarā ca madhuraį¹ antarā ca veraƱjaį¹ addhānamaggappaį¹­ipanno hoti. At one time the Buddha was traveling along the road between Madhurā and VeraƱjā,

Sambahulāpi kho gahapatÄ« ca gahapatāniyo ca antarā ca madhuraį¹ antarā ca veraƱjaį¹ addhānamaggappaį¹­ipannā honti. as were several householders, both women and men.

Atha kho bhagavā maggā okkamma aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le (ā€¦) nisÄ«di. The Buddha left the road and sat at the root of a tree,

Addasaį¹su kho gahapatÄ« ca gahapatāniyo ca bhagavantaį¹ aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le nisinnaį¹. where the householders saw him.

Disvā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinne kho te gahapatÄ« ca gahapatāniyo ca bhagavā etadavoca: They went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to them:

ā€œCattārome, gahapatayo, saį¹vāsā. ā€œHouseholders, there are four ways of living together.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Chavo chavāya saddhiį¹ saį¹vasati, A male zombie living with a female zombie;

chavo deviyā saddhiį¹ saį¹vasati, a male zombie living with a goddess;

devo chavāya saddhiį¹ saį¹vasati, a god living with a female zombie;

devo deviyā saddhiį¹ saį¹vasati. a god living with a goddess.

KathaƱca, gahapatayo, chavo chavāya saddhiį¹ saį¹vasati? And how does a male zombie live with a female zombie?

Idha, gahapatayo, sāmiko hoti pāį¹‡ÄtipātÄ« adinnādāyÄ« kāmesumicchācārÄ« musāvādÄ« surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hāyÄ« dussÄ«lo pāpadhammo maccheramalapariyuį¹­į¹­hitena cetasā agāraį¹ ajjhāvasati akkosakaparibhāsako samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Änaį¹; Itā€™s when the husband kills living creatures, steals, commits sexual misconduct, lies, and consumes beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants. Heā€™s unethical, of bad character, living at home with his heart full of the stain of stinginess, abusing and insulting ascetics and brahmins.

bhariyāpissa hoti pāį¹‡ÄtipātinÄ« adinnādāyinÄ« kāmesumicchācārinÄ« musāvādinÄ« surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hāyinÄ« dussÄ«lā pāpadhammā maccheramalapariyuį¹­į¹­hitena cetasā agāraį¹ ajjhāvasati akkosikaparibhāsikā samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Änaį¹. And the wife is also ā€¦ unethical, of bad character ā€¦

Evaį¹ kho, gahapatayo, chavo chavāya saddhiį¹ saį¹vasati. Thatā€™s how a male zombie lives with a female zombie.

bhariyā khvassa hoti pāį¹‡Ätipātā paį¹­iviratā adinnādānā paį¹­iviratā kāmesumicchācārā paį¹­iviratā musāvādā paį¹­iviratā surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­iviratā sÄ«lavatÄ« kalyāį¹‡adhammā vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraį¹ ajjhāvasati anakkosikaparibhāsikā samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Änaį¹. But the wife doesnā€™t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants. Sheā€™s ethical, of good character, living at home with her heart rid of the stain of stinginess, not abusing and insulting ascetics and brahmins.

Ime kho, gahapatayo, cattāro saį¹vāsāti. These are the four ways of living together.

Ubho ca honti dussīlā, When both are unethical,

kadariyā paribhāsakā; miserly and abusive,

Te honti jānipatayo, then wife and husband

chavā saį¹vāsamāgatā. live together as zombies.

Sāmiko hoti dussīlo, When the husband is unethical,

kadariyo paribhāsako; miserly and abusive,

Bhariyā sīlavatī hoti, but the wife is ethical,

vadaĆ±Ć±Å« vÄ«tamaccharā; bountiful, rid of stinginess,

Sāpi devÄ« saį¹vasati, sheā€™s a goddess living

chavena patinā saha. with a zombie for a husband.

Sāmiko sīlavā hoti, When the husband is ethical,

vadaĆ±Ć±Å« vÄ«tamaccharo; bountiful, rid of stinginess,

Bhariyā hoti dussīlā, but the wife is unethical,

kadariyā paribhāsikā; miserly and abusive,

Sāpi chavā saį¹vasati, sheā€™s a zombie living

devena patinā saha. with a god for a husband.

Ubho saddhā vadaĆ±Ć±Å« ca, When both are faithful and bountiful,

saƱƱatā dhammajīvino; disciplined, living righteously,

Te honti jānipatayo, then wife and husband

aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ piyaį¹vadā. say nice things to each other.

Atthāsaį¹ pacurā honti, Their needs are amply satisfied,

phāsukaį¹ upajāyati; so they live at ease.

Amittā dummanā honti, Their enemies are downhearted,

ubhinnaį¹ samasÄ«linaį¹. when both are equal in ethics.

Idha dhammaį¹ caritvāna, Having practiced the teaching here,

samasīlabbatā ubho; both equal in precepts and observances,

Nandino devalokasmiį¹, they delight in the heavenly realm,

modanti kāmakāminoā€ti. enjoying all the pleasures they desire.ā€
