Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ koliyesu viharati pajjanikaį¹ nÄma koliyÄnaį¹ nigamo. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Koliyans, where they have a town named Pajjanika.
Atha kho bhagavÄ pubbaį¹hasamayaį¹ nivÄsetvÄ pattacÄ«varamÄdÄya yena suppavÄsÄya koliyadhÄ«tuyÄ nivesanaį¹ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ paƱƱatte Äsane nisÄ«di. Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of SuppavÄsÄ the Koliyan, where he sat on the seat spread out.
Atha kho suppavÄsÄ koliyadhÄ«tÄ bhagavantaį¹ paį¹Ä«tena khÄdanÄ«yena bhojanÄ«yena sahatthÄ santappesi sampavÄresi. Then SuppavÄsÄ served and satisfied the Buddha with her own hands with delicious fresh and cooked foods.
Atha kho suppavÄsÄ koliyadhÄ«tÄ bhagavantaį¹ bhuttÄviį¹ onÄ«tapattapÄį¹iį¹ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. When the Buddha had eaten and washed his hand and bowl, she sat down to one side.
Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho suppavÄsaį¹ koliyadhÄ«taraį¹ bhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said to her:
āBhojanaį¹, suppavÄse, dentÄ« ariyasÄvikÄ paį¹iggÄhakÄnaį¹ cattÄri į¹hÄnÄni deti. āSuppavÄsÄ, when a noble disciple gives food, she gives the recipients four things.
KatamÄni cattÄri? What four?
Äyuį¹ deti, vaį¹į¹aį¹ deti, sukhaį¹ deti, balaį¹ deti. Long life, beauty, happiness, and strength.
Äyuį¹ kho pana datvÄ Äyussa bhÄginÄ« hoti dibbassa vÄ mÄnusassa vÄ. Giving long life, she has long life as a god or human.
Vaį¹į¹aį¹ datvÄ vaį¹į¹assa bhÄginÄ« hoti dibbassa vÄ mÄnusassa vÄ. Giving beauty, she has beauty as a god or human.
Sukhaį¹ datvÄ sukhassa bhÄginÄ« hoti dibbassa vÄ mÄnusassa vÄ. Giving happiness, she has happiness as a god or human.
Balaį¹ datvÄ balassa bhÄginÄ« hoti dibbassa vÄ mÄnusassa vÄ. Giving strength, she has strength as a god or human.
Bhojanaį¹, suppavÄse, dentÄ« ariyasÄvikÄ paį¹iggÄhakÄnaį¹ imÄni cattÄri į¹hÄnÄni detÄ«ti. When a noble disciple gives food, she gives the recipients these four things.

khataį¹ bhojanaį¹ yÄ dadÄti, When she gives well-prepared food,
Suciį¹ paį¹Ä«taį¹ rasasÄ upetaį¹; pure, fine, and full of flavor,
SÄ dakkhiį¹Ä ujjugatesu dinnÄ, that offeringāgiven to the sincere,
Caraį¹Å«papannesu mahaggatesu; who have good conduct, and are big-heartedā
PuƱƱena puƱƱaį¹ saį¹sandamÄnÄ, joins merit to merit. Itās very fruitful,
MahapphalÄ lokavidÅ«na vaį¹į¹itÄ. and is praised by those who know the world.
EtÄdisaį¹ yaƱƱamanussarantÄ, Those who recall such sacrifices,
Ye vedajÄtÄ vicaranti loke; live in the world full of inspiration.
Vineyya maccheramalaį¹ samÅ«laį¹, Theyāve driven out the stain of stinginess, root and all,
AninditÄ saggamupenti į¹hÄnanāti. blameless, they go to a heavenly place.ā
