Suppavāsāsutta Suppavāsā

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā koliyesu viharati pajjanikaį¹ nāma koliyānaį¹ nigamo. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Koliyans, where they have a town named Pajjanika.

Atha kho bhagavā pubbaį¹‡hasamayaį¹ nivāsetvā pattacÄ«varamādāya yena suppavāsāya koliyadhÄ«tuyā nivesanaį¹ tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā paƱƱatte āsane nisÄ«di. Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of Suppavāsā the Koliyan, where he sat on the seat spread out.

Atha kho suppavāsā koliyadhÄ«tā bhagavantaį¹ paį¹‡Ä«tena khādanÄ«yena bhojanÄ«yena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi. Then Suppavāsā served and satisfied the Buddha with her own hands with delicious fresh and cooked foods.

Atha kho suppavāsā koliyadhÄ«tā bhagavantaį¹ bhuttāviį¹ onÄ«tapattapāį¹‡iį¹ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. When the Buddha had eaten and washed his hand and bowl, she sat down to one side.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho suppavāsaį¹ koliyadhÄ«taraį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said to her:

ā€œBhojanaį¹, suppavāse, dentÄ« ariyasāvikā paį¹­iggāhakānaį¹ cattāri į¹­hānāni deti. ā€œSuppavāsā, when a noble disciple gives food, she gives the recipients four things.

Katamāni cattāri? What four?

Āyuį¹ deti, vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ deti, sukhaį¹ deti, balaį¹ deti. Long life, beauty, happiness, and strength.

Āyuį¹ kho pana datvā āyussa bhāginÄ« hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā. Giving long life, she has long life as a god or human.

Vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ datvā vaį¹‡į¹‡assa bhāginÄ« hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā. Giving beauty, she has beauty as a god or human.

Sukhaį¹ datvā sukhassa bhāginÄ« hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā. Giving happiness, she has happiness as a god or human.

Balaį¹ datvā balassa bhāginÄ« hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā. Giving strength, she has strength as a god or human.

Bhojanaį¹, suppavāse, dentÄ« ariyasāvikā paį¹­iggāhakānaį¹ imāni cattāri į¹­hānāni detÄ«ti. When a noble disciple gives food, she gives the recipients these four things.

Susaį¹…khataį¹ bhojanaį¹ yā dadāti, When she gives well-prepared food,

Suciį¹ paį¹‡Ä«taį¹ rasasā upetaį¹; pure, fine, and full of flavor,

Sā dakkhiį¹‡Ä ujjugatesu dinnā, that offeringā€”given to the sincere,

Caraį¹‡Å«papannesu mahaggatesu; who have good conduct, and are big-heartedā€”

PuƱƱena puƱƱaį¹ saį¹sandamānā, joins merit to merit. Itā€™s very fruitful,

Mahapphalā lokavidÅ«na vaį¹‡į¹‡itā. and is praised by those who know the world.

Etādisaį¹ yaƱƱamanussarantā, Those who recall such sacrifices,

Ye vedajātā vicaranti loke; live in the world full of inspiration.

Vineyya maccheramalaį¹ samÅ«laį¹, Theyā€™ve driven out the stain of stinginess, root and all,

Aninditā saggamupenti į¹­hānanā€ti. blameless, they go to a heavenly place.ā€
