RÅ«pasutta Appearance
āCattÄrome, bhikkhave, puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. āMendicants, these four people are found in the world.
Katame cattÄro? What four?
RÅ«pappamÄį¹o rÅ«pappasanno, ghosappamÄį¹o ghosappasanno, lÅ«khappamÄį¹o lÅ«khappasanno, dhammappamÄį¹o dhammappasannoāThere are those whose estimation of and confidence in others is based on their appearance, on their voice, on their mortification, and on principle.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattÄro puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasminti. These are the four people found in the world.
Ye ca rÅ«pe pamÄį¹iį¹su, Those who judge on appearance,
ye ca ghosena anvagū; and those swayed by a voice,
ChandarÄgavasÅ«petÄ, are full of desire and greed;
nÄbhijÄnanti te janÄ. those people just donāt understand.
AjjhattaƱca na jÄnÄti, Not knowing whatās inside,
bahiddhÄ ca na passati; nor seeing whatās outside,
SamantÄvaraį¹o bÄlo, the fool shut in on every side,
sa ve ghosena vuyhati. gets carried away by a voice.
AjjhattaƱca na jÄnÄti, Not knowing whatās inside,
bahiddhÄ ca vipassati; but discerning whatās outside,
BahiddhÄ phaladassÄvÄ«, seeing the fruit outside,
sopi ghosena vuyhati. theyāre also carried away by a voice.
AjjhattaƱca pajÄnÄti, Understanding whatās inside,
bahiddhÄ ca vipassati; and discerning whatās outside,
VinÄ«varaį¹adassÄvÄ«, seeing without hindrances,
na so ghosena vuyhatÄ«āti. they donāt get carried away by a voice.ā
