RÅ«pasutta Appearance

ā€œCattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. ā€œMendicants, these four people are found in the world.

Katame cattāro? What four?

RÅ«pappamāį¹‡o rÅ«pappasanno, ghosappamāį¹‡o ghosappasanno, lÅ«khappamāį¹‡o lÅ«khappasanno, dhammappamāį¹‡o dhammappasannoā€”There are those whose estimation of and confidence in others is based on their appearance, on their voice, on their mortification, and on principle.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasminti. These are the four people found in the world.

Ye ca rÅ«pe pamāį¹‡iį¹su, Those who judge on appearance,

ye ca ghosena anvagū; and those swayed by a voice,

Chandarāgavasūpetā, are full of desire and greed;

nābhijānanti te janā. those people just donā€™t understand.

AjjhattaƱca na jānāti, Not knowing whatā€™s inside,

bahiddhā ca na passati; nor seeing whatā€™s outside,

Samantāvaraį¹‡o bālo, the fool shut in on every side,

sa ve ghosena vuyhati. gets carried away by a voice.

AjjhattaƱca na jānāti, Not knowing whatā€™s inside,

bahiddhā ca vipassati; but discerning whatā€™s outside,

Bahiddhā phaladassāvī, seeing the fruit outside,

sopi ghosena vuyhati. theyā€™re also carried away by a voice.

AjjhattaƱca pajānāti, Understanding whatā€™s inside,

bahiddhā ca vipassati; and discerning whatā€™s outside,

VinÄ«varaį¹‡adassāvÄ«, seeing without hindrances,

na so ghosena vuyhatÄ«ā€ti. they donā€™t get carried away by a voice.ā€
