Padhānasutta Effort

ā€œCattārimāni, bhikkhave, padhānāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these four efforts.

Katamāni cattāri? What four?

Saį¹varappadhānaį¹, pahānappadhānaį¹, bhāvanāppadhānaį¹, anurakkhaį¹‡Äppadhānaį¹. The efforts to restrain, to give up, to develop, and to preserve.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saį¹varappadhānaį¹? And what, mendicants, is the effort to restrain?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaį¹ pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ anuppādāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati. Itā€™s when you generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities donā€™t arise.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, saį¹varappadhānaį¹. This is called the effort to restrain.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, pahānappadhānaį¹? And what, mendicants, is the effort to give up?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannānaį¹ pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati. Itā€™s when you generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities are given up.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, pahānappadhānaį¹. This is called the effort to give up.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, bhāvanāppadhānaį¹? And what, mendicants, is the effort to develop?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ uppādāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati. Itā€™s when you generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhāvanāppadhānaį¹. This is called the effort to develop.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, anurakkhaį¹‡Äppadhānaį¹? And what, mendicants, is the effort to preserve?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ į¹­hitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripÅ«riyā chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati. Itā€™s when you generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are fulfilled by development.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, anurakkhaį¹‡Äppadhānaį¹. This is called the effort to preserve.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri padhānānīti. These are the four efforts.

Saį¹varo ca pahānaƱca, Restraint and giving up,

bhāvanā anurakkhaį¹‡Ä; development and preservation:

Ete padhānā cattāro, these are the four efforts

desitādiccabandhunā; taught by the kinsman of the Sun.

Yo hi bhikkhu idhātāpī, Any mendicant who keenly applies these

khayaį¹ dukkhassa pāpuį¹‡eā€ti. may attain the ending of suffering.ā€
