Padhānasutta Effort

ā€œCatÅ«hi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu apaį¹‡į¹‡akappaį¹­ipadaį¹ paį¹­ipanno hoti, yoni cassa āraddhā hoti āsavānaį¹ khayāya. ā€œMendicants, when a mendicant has four things their practice is unfailing, and they have laid the groundwork for ending the defilements.

Katamehi catūhi? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«lavā hoti, bahussuto hoti, āraddhavÄ«riyo hoti, paƱƱavā hoti. Itā€™s when a mendicant is ethical, learned, energetic, and wise.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catÅ«hi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu apaį¹‡į¹‡akappaį¹­ipadaį¹ paį¹­ipanno hoti, yoni cassa āraddhā hoti āsavānaį¹ khayāyāā€ti. When a mendicant has these four things their practice is unfailing, and they have laid the groundwork for ending the defilements.ā€
