Sappurisasutta A True Person

ā€œCatÅ«hi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato asappuriso veditabbo. ā€œMendicants, an untrue person can be known by four qualities.

Katamehi catūhi? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, asappuriso yo hoti parassa avaį¹‡į¹‡o taį¹ apuį¹­į¹­hopi pātu karoti, ko pana vādo puį¹­į¹­hassa. To start with, an untrue person speaks ill of another even when not asked, let alone when asked.

Puį¹­į¹­ho kho pana paƱhābhinÄ«to ahāpetvā alambitvā paripÅ«raį¹ vitthārena parassa avaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhāsitā hoti. But when summoned for questioning they speak ill of another in full detail, not leaving anything out.

Veditabbametaį¹, bhikkhave, asappuriso ayaį¹ bhavanti. Thatā€™s how to know that this is an untrue person.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato sappuriso veditabbo. A true person can be known by these four qualities.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, vadhukā yaƱƱadeva rattiį¹ vā divaį¹ vā ānÄ«tā hoti, tāvadevassā tibbaį¹ hirottappaį¹ paccupaį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ hoti sassuyāpi sasurepi sāmikepi antamaso dāsakammakaraporisesu. Itā€™s like a bride on the day or night sheā€™s first brought to her husbandā€™s home. Right away she sets up a keen sense of conscience and prudence for her mother and father in law, her husband, and even the bondservants, workers, and staff.

Sā aparena samayena saį¹vāsamanvāya vissāsamanvāya sassumpi sasurampi sāmikampi evamāha: But after some time, because of living together and familiarity, sheā€™ll even say to her mother and father in law, or to her husband:

ā€˜apetha, kiį¹ pana tumhe jānāthāā€™ti. ā€˜Go away! What would you know?ā€™

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco bhikkhu yaƱƱadeva rattiį¹ vā divaį¹ vā agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajito hoti, tāvadevassa tibbaį¹ hirottappaį¹ paccupaį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ hoti bhikkhÅ«su bhikkhunÄ«su upāsakesu upāsikāsu antamaso ārāmikasamaį¹‡uddesesu. In the same way, on the day or night a mendicant first goes forth from the lay life to homelessness, right away they set up a keen sense of conscience and prudence for the monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen, and even the monastery workers and novices.

So aparena samayena saį¹vāsamanvāya vissāsamanvāya ācariyampi upajjhāyampi evamāha: But after some time, because of living together and familiarity, theyā€™ll even say to their tutor or mentor:

ā€˜apetha, kiį¹ pana tumhe jānāthāā€™ti. ā€˜Go away! What would you know?ā€™

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: So you should train like this:

ā€˜adhunāgatavadhukāsamena cetasā viharissāmāā€™ti. ā€˜We will live with hearts like that of a newly wedded bride.ā€™

EvaƱhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbanā€ti. Thatā€™s how you should train.ā€
