Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kusinÄrÄyaį¹ viharati upavattane mallÄnaį¹ sÄlavane antarena yamakasÄlÄnaį¹ parinibbÄnasamaye. At one time the Buddha was staying between a pair of sal trees in the sal forest of the Mallas at Upavattana near KusinÄrÄ at the time of his full extinguishment.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,
ābhikkhavoāti. āMendicants!ā
āBhadanteāti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āVenerable sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āSiyÄ kho pana, bhikkhave, ekabhikkhussapi kaį¹
khÄ vÄ vimati vÄ buddhe vÄ dhamme vÄ saį¹
ghe vÄ magge vÄ paį¹ipadÄya vÄ, pucchatha, bhikkhave, mÄ pacchÄ vippaį¹isÄrino ahuvattha: āPerhaps even a single mendicant has doubt or uncertainty regarding the Buddha, the teaching, the Saį¹
gha, the path, or the practice. So ask, mendicants! Donāt regret it later, thinking:
āsammukhÄ«bhÅ«to no satthÄ ahosi, nÄsakkhimha bhagavantaį¹ sammukhÄ paį¹ipucchitunāāti. āWe were in the Teacherās presence and we werenāt able to ask the Buddha a question.āā
Evaį¹ vutte, te bhikkhÅ« tuį¹hÄ« ahesuį¹. When this was said, the mendicants kept silent.
Dutiyampi kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: For a second time the Buddha addressed the mendicants: ā¦
āsiyÄ kho pana, bhikkhave, ekabhikkhussapi kaį¹
khÄ vÄ vimati vÄ buddhe vÄ dhamme vÄ saį¹
ghe vÄ magge vÄ paį¹ipadÄya vÄ, pucchatha, bhikkhave, mÄ pacchÄ vippaį¹isÄrino ahuvattha:
āsammukhÄ«bhÅ«to no satthÄ ahosi, nÄsakkhimha bhagavantaį¹ sammukhÄ paį¹ipucchitunāāti.
Dutiyampi kho te bhikkhÅ« tuį¹hÄ« ahesuį¹. For a second time, the mendicants kept silent.
Tatiyampi kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: For a third time the Buddha addressed the mendicants: ā¦
āsiyÄ kho pana, bhikkhave, ekabhikkhussapi kaį¹
khÄ vÄ vimati vÄ buddhe vÄ dhamme vÄ saį¹
ghe vÄ magge vÄ paį¹ipadÄya vÄ, pucchatha, bhikkhave, mÄ pacchÄ vippaį¹isÄrino ahuvattha:
āsammukhÄ«bhÅ«to no satthÄ ahosi, nÄsakkhimha bhagavantaį¹ sammukhÄ paį¹ipucchitunāāti.
Tatiyampi kho te bhikkhÅ« tuį¹hÄ« ahesuį¹. For a third time, the mendicants kept silent.
Atha kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: Then the Buddha said to the mendicants:
āsiyÄ kho pana, bhikkhave, satthugÄravenapi na puccheyyÄtha, sahÄyakopi, bhikkhave, sahÄyakassa ÄrocetÅ«āti. āMendicants, perhaps you donāt ask out of respect for the Teacher. So let a friend tell a friend.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, te bhikkhÅ« tuį¹hÄ« ahesuį¹. When this was said, the mendicants kept silent.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Änanda said to the Buddha:
āacchariyaį¹, bhante, abbhutaį¹, bhante. āItās incredible, sir, itās amazing!
Evaį¹ pasanno ahaį¹, bhante. Natthi imasmiį¹ bhikkhusaį¹
ghe ekabhikkhussapi kaį¹
khÄ vÄ vimati vÄ buddhe vÄ dhamme vÄ saį¹
ghe vÄ magge vÄ paį¹ipadÄya vÄāti. I am quite confident that thereās not even a single mendicant in this Saį¹
gha who has doubt or uncertainty regarding the Buddha, the teaching, the Saį¹
gha, the path, or the practice.ā
āPasÄdÄ kho tvaį¹, Änanda, vadesi. ĆÄį¹ameva hettha, Änanda, tathÄgatassa: ānatthi imasmiį¹ bhikkhusaį¹
ghe ekabhikkhussapi kaį¹
khÄ vÄ vimati vÄ buddhe vÄ dhamme vÄ saį¹
ghe vÄ magge vÄ paį¹ipadÄya vÄā. āÄnanda, you speak from faith. But the Realized One knows that thereās not even a single mendicant in this Saį¹
gha who has doubt or uncertainty regarding the Buddha, the teaching, the Saį¹
gha, the path, or the practice.
ImesaƱhi, Änanda, paƱcannaį¹ bhikkhusatÄnaį¹ yo pacchimako bhikkhu so sotÄpanno avinipÄtadhammo niyato sambodhiparÄyaį¹oāti. Even the last of these five hundred mendicants is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.ā
Chaį¹į¹haį¹.
