ā€œCattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. ā€œMendicants, these four people are found in the world.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo lābhÄ« hoti ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa, na lābhÄ« adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya. One person has internal serenity of heart, but not the higher wisdom of discernment of principles.

Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo lābhÄ« hoti adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya, na lābhÄ« ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa. One person has the higher wisdom of discernment of principles, but not internal serenity of heart.

Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo na ceva lābhÄ« hoti ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa na ca lābhÄ« adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya. One person has neither internal serenity of heart, nor the higher wisdom of discernment of principles.

Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo lābhÄ« ceva hoti ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa lābhÄ« ca adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya. One person has both internal serenity of heart, and the higher wisdom of discernment of principles.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yvāyaį¹ puggalo lābhÄ« ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa na lābhÄ« adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya, tena, bhikkhave, puggalena yvāyaį¹ puggalo lābhÄ« adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya so upasaį¹…kamitvā evamassa vacanÄ«yo: As for the person who has serenity but not discernment: they should approach someone who has discernment and ask:

ā€˜kathaį¹ nu kho, āvuso, saį¹…khārā daį¹­į¹­habbā? ā€˜Reverend, how should conditions be seen?

Kathaį¹ saį¹…khārā sammasitabbā? How should they be comprehended?

Kathaį¹ saį¹…khārā vipassitabbāā€™ti? How should they be discerned?ā€™

Tassa so yathādiį¹­į¹­haį¹ yathāviditaį¹ byākaroti: That person would answer from their own experience:

ā€˜evaį¹ kho, āvuso, saį¹…khārā daį¹­į¹­habbā, evaį¹ saį¹…khārā sammasitabbā, evaį¹ saį¹…khārā vipassitabbāā€™ti. ā€˜This is how conditions should be seen, comprehended, and discerned.ā€™

So aparena samayena lābhÄ« ceva hoti ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa lābhÄ« ca adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya. After some time they have both serenity and discernment.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yvāyaį¹ puggalo lābhÄ« adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya na lābhÄ« ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa, tena, bhikkhave, puggalena yvāyaį¹ puggalo lābhÄ« ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa so upasaį¹…kamitvā evamassa vacanÄ«yo: As for the person who has discernment but not serenity: they should approach someone who has serenity and ask:

ā€˜kathaį¹ nu kho, āvuso, cittaį¹ saį¹‡į¹­hapetabbaį¹? ā€˜Reverend, how should the mind be stilled?

Kathaį¹ cittaį¹ sannisādetabbaį¹? How should it be settled?

Kathaį¹ cittaį¹ ekodi kātabbaį¹? How should it be unified?

Kathaį¹ cittaį¹ samādahātabbanā€™ti? How should it be immersed in samādhi?ā€™

Tassa so yathādiį¹­į¹­haį¹ yathāviditaį¹ byākaroti: That person would answer from their own experience:

ā€˜evaį¹ kho, āvuso, cittaį¹ saį¹‡į¹­hapetabbaį¹, evaį¹ cittaį¹ sannisādetabbaį¹, evaį¹ cittaį¹ ekodi kātabbaį¹, evaį¹ cittaį¹ samādahātabbanā€™ti. ā€˜Reverend, this is how the mind should be stilled, settled, unified, and immersed in samādhi.ā€™

So aparena samaye lābhÄ« ceva hoti adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya lābhÄ« ca ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa. After some time they have both discernment and serenity.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yvāyaį¹ puggalo na ceva lābhÄ« ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa na ca lābhÄ« adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya, tena, bhikkhave, puggalena yvāyaį¹ puggalo lābhÄ« ceva ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa lābhÄ« ca adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya so upasaį¹…kamitvā evamassa vacanÄ«yo: As for the person who has neither serenity nor discernment: they should approach someone who has serenity and discernment and ask:

ā€˜kathaį¹ nu kho, āvuso, cittaį¹ saį¹‡į¹­hapetabbaį¹? ā€˜Reverend, how should the mind be stilled?

Kathaį¹ cittaį¹ sannisādetabbaį¹? How should it be settled?

Kathaį¹ cittaį¹ ekodi kātabbaį¹? How should it be unified?

Kathaį¹ cittaį¹ samādahātabbaį¹? How should it be immersed in samādhi?ā€™

ā€˜evaį¹ kho, āvuso, cittaį¹ saį¹‡į¹­hapetabbaį¹, evaį¹ cittaį¹ sannisādetabbaį¹, evaį¹ cittaį¹ ekodi kātabbaį¹, evaį¹ cittaį¹ samādahātabbaį¹, evaį¹ saį¹…khārā daį¹­į¹­habbā, evaį¹ saį¹…khārā sammasitabbā, evaį¹ saį¹…khārā vipassitabbāā€™ti. ā€˜Reverend, this is how the mind should be stilled, settled, unified, and immersed in samādhi. And this is how conditions should be seen, comprehended, and discerned.ā€™

So aparena samayena lābhÄ« ceva hoti ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa lābhÄ« ca adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya. After some time they have both serenity and discernment.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yvāyaį¹ puggalo lābhÄ« ceva hoti ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa lābhÄ« ca adhipaƱƱādhammavipassanāya, tena, bhikkhave, puggalena tesu ceva kusalesu dhammesu patiį¹­į¹­hāya uttari āsavānaį¹ khayāya yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yo. As for the person who has both serenity and discernment: grounded on those skillful qualities, they should practice meditation further to end the defilements.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasminā€ti. These are the four people found in the world.ā€
