āCattÄrome, bhikkhave, puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. āMendicants, these four people are found in the world.
Katame cattÄro? What four?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo lÄbhÄ« hoti ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa, na lÄbhÄ« adhipaƱƱÄdhammavipassanÄya. One person has internal serenity of heart, but not the higher wisdom of discernment of principles.
Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo lÄbhÄ« hoti adhipaƱƱÄdhammavipassanÄya, na lÄbhÄ« ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa. One person has the higher wisdom of discernment of principles, but not internal serenity of heart.
Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo na ceva lÄbhÄ« hoti ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa na ca lÄbhÄ« adhipaƱƱÄdhammavipassanÄya. One person has neither internal serenity of heart, nor the higher wisdom of discernment of principles.
Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo lÄbhÄ« ceva hoti ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa lÄbhÄ« ca adhipaƱƱÄdhammavipassanÄya. One person has both internal serenity of heart, and the higher wisdom of discernment of principles.

kamitvÄ evamassa vacanÄ«yo: As for the person who has serenity but not discernment: they should approach someone who has discernment and ask:
ākathaį¹ nu kho, Ävuso, saį¹
khÄrÄ daį¹į¹habbÄ? āReverend, how should conditions be seen?
Kathaį¹ saį¹
khÄrÄ sammasitabbÄ? How should they be comprehended?
Kathaį¹ saį¹
khÄrÄ vipassitabbÄāti? How should they be discerned?ā
Tassa so yathÄdiį¹į¹haį¹ yathÄviditaį¹ byÄkaroti: That person would answer from their own experience:
āevaį¹ kho, Ävuso, saį¹
khÄrÄ daį¹į¹habbÄ, evaį¹ saį¹
khÄrÄ sammasitabbÄ, evaį¹ saį¹
khÄrÄ vipassitabbÄāti. āThis is how conditions should be seen, comprehended, and discerned.ā
So aparena samayena lÄbhÄ« ceva hoti ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa lÄbhÄ« ca adhipaƱƱÄdhammavipassanÄya. After some time they have both serenity and discernment.
Tatra, bhikkhave, yvÄyaį¹ puggalo lÄbhÄ« adhipaƱƱÄdhammavipassanÄya na lÄbhÄ« ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa, tena, bhikkhave, puggalena yvÄyaį¹ puggalo lÄbhÄ« ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa so upasaį¹
kamitvÄ evamassa vacanÄ«yo: As for the person who has discernment but not serenity: they should approach someone who has serenity and ask:
ākathaį¹ nu kho, Ävuso, cittaį¹ saį¹į¹hapetabbaį¹? āReverend, how should the mind be stilled?
Kathaį¹ cittaį¹ sannisÄdetabbaį¹? How should it be settled?
Kathaį¹ cittaį¹ ekodi kÄtabbaį¹? How should it be unified?
Kathaį¹ cittaį¹ samÄdahÄtabbanāti? How should it be immersed in samÄdhi?ā
Tassa so yathÄdiį¹į¹haį¹ yathÄviditaį¹ byÄkaroti: That person would answer from their own experience:

As for the person who has both serenity and discernment: grounded on those skillful qualities, they should practice meditation further to end the defilements.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattÄro puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmināti. These are the four people found in the world.ā
