Potaliyasutta With Potaliya the Wanderer

Atha kho potaliyo paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the wanderer Potaliya went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho potaliyaį¹ paribbājakaį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and the Buddha said to him:

ā€œCattārome, potaliya, puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. ā€œPotaliya, these four people are found in the world.

Idha, potaliya, ekacco puggalo avaį¹‡į¹‡Ärahassa avaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhāsitā hoti bhÅ«taį¹ tacchaį¹ kālena, no ca kho vaį¹‡į¹‡Ärahassa vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ bhāsitā hoti bhÅ«taį¹ tacchaį¹ kālena. One person criticizes those deserving of criticism at the right time, truthfully and correctly. But they donā€™t praise those deserving of praise at the right time, truthfully and correctly.

ayaį¹ me puggalo khamati imesaį¹ catunnaį¹ puggalānaį¹ abhikkantataro ca paį¹‡Ä«tataro ca. That is the person I believe to be the finest.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Abhikkantā hesā, bho gotama, yadidaį¹ upekkhāā€ti. Because, worthy Gotama, equanimity is the best.ā€

Abhikkantā hesā, bho gotama, yadidaį¹ tattha tattha kālaƱƱutā. Because, worthy Gotama, understanding of time and context is the best.

Abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama, abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama. Excellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent!

Seyyathāpi, bho gotama, nikkujjitaį¹ vā ukkujjeyya, paį¹­icchannaį¹ vā vivareyya, mÅ«įø·hassa vā maggaį¹ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaį¹ dhāreyya: ā€˜cakkhumanto rÅ«pāni dakkhantÄ«ā€™ti; evamevaį¹ bhotā gotamena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see whatā€™s there, worthy Gotama has made the teaching clear in many ways.

Esāhaį¹ bhavantaį¹ gotamaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gacchāmi dhammaƱca bhikkhusaį¹…ghaƱca. I go for refuge to the worthy Gotama, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Saį¹…gha.

Upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€

Tassuddānaį¹

Asuro tayo samādhī,

chavālātena paƱcamaį¹;

Rāgo nisanti attahitaį¹,

sikkhā potaliyena cāti.
