kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho kesiį¹ assadammasÄrathiį¹ bhagavÄ etadavoca: Then Kesi the horse trainer went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him,
ātvaį¹ khosi, kesi, paƱƱÄto assadammasÄrathÄ«ti. āKesi, youāre known as a horse trainer.
Kathaį¹ pana tvaį¹, kesi, assadammaį¹ vinesÄ«āti? Just how do you guide a horse in training?ā
āAhaį¹ kho, bhante, assadammaį¹ saį¹henapi vinemi, pharusenapi vinemi, saį¹hapharusenapi vinemÄ«āti. āSir, I guide a horse in training sometimes gently, sometimes harshly, and sometimes both gently and harshly.ā
āSace te, kesi, assadammo saį¹hena vinayaį¹ na upeti, pharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, saį¹hapharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, kinti naį¹ karosÄ«āti? āKesi, what do you do with a horse in training that doesnāt follow these forms of training?ā
āSace me, bhante, assadammo saį¹hena vinayaį¹ na upeti, pharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, saį¹hapharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti;

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
āMÄ me Äcariyakulassa avaį¹į¹o ahosÄ«āti. So that I donāt disgrace my tradition.
BhagavÄ pana, bhante, anuttaro purisadammasÄrathi. But sir, the Buddha is the supreme guide for those who wish to train.
Kathaį¹ pana, bhante, bhagavÄ purisadammaį¹ vinetÄ«āti? Just how do you guide a person in training?ā
āAhaį¹ kho, kesi, purisadammaį¹ saį¹henapi vinemi, pharusenapi vinemi, saį¹hapharusenapi vinemi. āKesi, I guide a person in training sometimes gently, sometimes harshly, and sometimes both gently and harshly.
Tatridaį¹, kesi, saį¹hasmiį¹āThe gentle way is this:
iti kÄyasucaritaį¹ iti kÄyasucaritassa vipÄko, iti vacÄ«sucaritaį¹ iti vacÄ«sucaritassa vipÄko, iti manosucaritaį¹ iti manosucaritassa vipÄko, iti devÄ, iti manussÄti. āThis is good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is the result of good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is life as a god. This is life as a human.ā
Tatridaį¹, kesi, pharusasmiį¹āThe harsh way is this:
iti kÄyaduccaritaį¹ iti kÄyaduccaritassa vipÄko, iti vacÄ«duccaritaį¹ iti vacÄ«duccaritassa vipÄko, iti manoduccaritaį¹ iti manoduccaritassa vipÄko, iti nirayo, iti tiracchÄnayoni, iti pettivisayoti. āThis is bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is the result of bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is life in hell. This is life as an animal. This is life as a ghost.ā
Tatridaį¹, kesi, saį¹hapharusasmiį¹āThe both gentle and harsh way is this:
iti kÄyasucaritaį¹ iti kÄyasucaritassa vipÄko, iti kÄyaduccaritaį¹ iti kÄyaduccaritassa vipÄko, iti vacÄ«sucaritaį¹ iti vacÄ«sucaritassa vipÄko, iti vacÄ«duccaritaį¹ iti vacÄ«duccaritassa vipÄko, iti manosucaritaį¹ iti manosucaritassa vipÄko, iti manoduccaritaį¹ iti manoduccaritassa vipÄko, iti devÄ, iti manussÄ, iti nirayo, iti tiracchÄnayoni, iti pettivisayoāti. āThis is good conduct ā¦ this is bad conduct ā¦āā
āSace te, bhante, purisadammo saį¹hena vinayaį¹ na upeti, pharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, saį¹hapharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, kinti naį¹ bhagavÄ karotÄ«āti? āSir, what do you do with a person in training who doesnāt follow these forms of training?ā
āSace me, kesi, purisadammo saį¹hena vinayaį¹ na upeti, pharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, saį¹hapharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, hanÄmi naį¹, kesÄ«āti. āIn that case, Kesi, I kill them.ā
āNa kho, bhante, bhagavato pÄį¹ÄtipÄto kappati. āSir, itās not appropriate for the Buddha to kill living creatures.
Atha ca pana bhagavÄ evamÄha: And yet you say
āhanÄmi naį¹, kesÄ«āāti. you kill them.ā
āSaccaį¹, kesi. āItās true, Kesi,
Na tathÄgatassa pÄį¹ÄtipÄto kappati. itās not appropriate for a Realized One to kill living creatures.
Api ca yo purisadammo saį¹hena vinayaį¹ na upeti, pharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, saį¹hapharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, na taį¹ tathÄgato vattabbaį¹ anusÄsitabbaį¹ maƱƱati, nÄpi viĆ±Ć±Å« sabrahmacÄrÄ« vattabbaį¹ anusÄsitabbaį¹ maƱƱanti. But when a person in training doesnāt follow any of these forms of training, the Realized One doesnāt think theyāre worth advising or instructing, and neither do their sensible spiritual companions.
Vadho heso, kesi, ariyassa vinayeāFor it is killing in the training of the Noble One
yaį¹ na tathÄgato vattabbaį¹ anusÄsitabbaį¹ maƱƱati, nÄpi viĆ±Ć±Å« sabrahmacÄrÄ« vattabbaį¹ anusÄsitabbaį¹ maƱƱantÄ«āti. when the Realized One doesnāt think theyāre worth advising or instructing, and neither do their sensible spiritual companions.ā
āSo hi nÅ«na, bhante, suhato hotiāāWell, theyāre definitely dead
yaį¹ na tathÄgato vattabbaį¹ anusÄsitabbaį¹ maƱƱati, nÄpi viĆ±Ć±Å« sabrahmacÄrÄ« vattabbaį¹ anusÄsitabbaį¹ maƱƱantÄ«ti. when the Realized One doesnāt think theyāre worth advising or instructing, and neither do their sensible spiritual companions.
