Kesisutta With Kesi

Atha kho kesi assadammasārathi yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho kesiį¹ assadammasārathiį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: Then Kesi the horse trainer went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him,

ā€œtvaį¹ khosi, kesi, paƱƱāto assadammasārathÄ«ti. ā€œKesi, youā€™re known as a horse trainer.

Kathaį¹ pana tvaį¹, kesi, assadammaį¹ vinesÄ«ā€ti? Just how do you guide a horse in training?ā€

ā€œAhaį¹ kho, bhante, assadammaį¹ saį¹‡henapi vinemi, pharusenapi vinemi, saį¹‡hapharusenapi vinemÄ«ā€ti. ā€œSir, I guide a horse in training sometimes gently, sometimes harshly, and sometimes both gently and harshly.ā€

ā€œSace te, kesi, assadammo saį¹‡hena vinayaį¹ na upeti, pharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, saį¹‡hapharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, kinti naį¹ karosÄ«ā€ti? ā€œKesi, what do you do with a horse in training that doesnā€™t follow these forms of training?ā€

ā€œSace me, bhante, assadammo saį¹‡hena vinayaį¹ na upeti, pharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, saį¹‡hapharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti;

hanāmi naį¹, bhante. ā€œIn that case, sir, I kill it.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

ā€˜Mā me ācariyakulassa avaį¹‡į¹‡o ahosÄ«ā€™ti. So that I donā€™t disgrace my tradition.

Bhagavā pana, bhante, anuttaro purisadammasārathi. But sir, the Buddha is the supreme guide for those who wish to train.

Kathaį¹ pana, bhante, bhagavā purisadammaį¹ vinetÄ«ā€ti? Just how do you guide a person in training?ā€

ā€œAhaį¹ kho, kesi, purisadammaį¹ saį¹‡henapi vinemi, pharusenapi vinemi, saį¹‡hapharusenapi vinemi. ā€œKesi, I guide a person in training sometimes gently, sometimes harshly, and sometimes both gently and harshly.

Tatridaį¹, kesi, saį¹‡hasmiį¹ā€”The gentle way is this:

iti kāyasucaritaį¹ iti kāyasucaritassa vipāko, iti vacÄ«sucaritaį¹ iti vacÄ«sucaritassa vipāko, iti manosucaritaį¹ iti manosucaritassa vipāko, iti devā, iti manussāti. ā€˜This is good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is the result of good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is life as a god. This is life as a human.ā€™

Tatridaį¹, kesi, pharusasmiį¹ā€”The harsh way is this:

iti kāyaduccaritaį¹ iti kāyaduccaritassa vipāko, iti vacÄ«duccaritaį¹ iti vacÄ«duccaritassa vipāko, iti manoduccaritaį¹ iti manoduccaritassa vipāko, iti nirayo, iti tiracchānayoni, iti pettivisayoti. ā€˜This is bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is the result of bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is life in hell. This is life as an animal. This is life as a ghost.ā€™

Tatridaį¹, kesi, saį¹‡hapharusasmiį¹ā€”The both gentle and harsh way is this:

iti kāyasucaritaį¹ iti kāyasucaritassa vipāko, iti kāyaduccaritaį¹ iti kāyaduccaritassa vipāko, iti vacÄ«sucaritaį¹ iti vacÄ«sucaritassa vipāko, iti vacÄ«duccaritaį¹ iti vacÄ«duccaritassa vipāko, iti manosucaritaį¹ iti manosucaritassa vipāko, iti manoduccaritaį¹ iti manoduccaritassa vipāko, iti devā, iti manussā, iti nirayo, iti tiracchānayoni, iti pettivisayoā€ti. ā€˜This is good conduct ā€¦ this is bad conduct ā€¦ā€™ā€

ā€œSir, what do you do with a person in training who doesnā€™t follow these forms of training?ā€

ā€œSace me, kesi, purisadammo saį¹‡hena vinayaį¹ na upeti, pharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, saį¹‡hapharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, hanāmi naį¹, kesÄ«ā€ti. ā€œIn that case, Kesi, I kill them.ā€

ā€œNa kho, bhante, bhagavato pāį¹‡Ätipāto kappati. ā€œSir, itā€™s not appropriate for the Buddha to kill living creatures.

Atha ca pana bhagavā evamāha: And yet you say

ā€˜hanāmi naį¹, kesÄ«ā€™ā€ti. you kill them.ā€

ā€œSaccaį¹, kesi. ā€œItā€™s true, Kesi,

Na tathāgatassa pāį¹‡Ätipāto kappati. itā€™s not appropriate for a Realized One to kill living creatures.

Api ca yo purisadammo saį¹‡hena vinayaį¹ na upeti, pharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, saį¹‡hapharusena vinayaį¹ na upeti, na taį¹ tathāgato vattabbaį¹ anusāsitabbaį¹ maƱƱati, nāpi viĆ±Ć±Å« sabrahmacārÄ« vattabbaį¹ anusāsitabbaį¹ maƱƱanti. But when a person in training doesnā€™t follow any of these forms of training, the Realized One doesnā€™t think theyā€™re worth advising or instructing, and neither do their sensible spiritual companions.

Vadho heso, kesi, ariyassa vinayeā€”For it is killing in the training of the Noble One

yaį¹ na tathāgato vattabbaį¹ anusāsitabbaį¹ maƱƱati, nāpi viĆ±Ć±Å« sabrahmacārÄ« vattabbaį¹ anusāsitabbaį¹ maƱƱantÄ«ā€ti. when the Realized One doesnā€™t think theyā€™re worth advising or instructing, and neither do their sensible spiritual companions.ā€

ā€œSo hi nÅ«na, bhante, suhato hotiā€”ā€œWell, theyā€™re definitely dead

yaį¹ na tathāgato vattabbaį¹ anusāsitabbaį¹ maƱƱati, nāpi viĆ±Ć±Å« sabrahmacārÄ« vattabbaį¹ anusāsitabbaį¹ maƱƱantÄ«ti. when the Realized One doesnā€™t think theyā€™re worth advising or instructing, and neither do their sensible spiritual companions.

Abhikkantaį¹, bhante, abhikkantaį¹, bhante ā€¦peā€¦ upāsakaį¹ maį¹, bhante, bhagavā dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. Excellent, sir! ā€¦ From this day forth, may the Buddha remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€

Paį¹hamaį¹.
