Patodasutta The Goad

ā€œCattārome, bhikkhave, bhadrā assājānÄ«yā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. ā€œMendicants, these four fine thoroughbreds are found in the world.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco bhadro assājānÄ«yo patodacchāyaį¹ disvā saį¹vijjati saį¹vegaį¹ āpajjati: One fine thoroughbred is moved to act when it sees the shadow of the goad, thinking:

ā€˜kiį¹ nu kho maį¹ ajja assadammasārathi kāraį¹‡aį¹ kāressati, kimassāhaį¹ paį¹­ikaromÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜What task will the horse trainer have me do today? How should I respond?ā€™

Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco bhadro assājānīyo hoti. Some fine thoroughbreds are like that.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­hamo bhadro assājānÄ«yo santo saį¹vijjamāno lokasmiį¹. This is the first fine thoroughbred found in the world.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, idhekacco bhadro assājānÄ«yo na heva kho patodacchāyaį¹ disvā saį¹vijjati saį¹vegaį¹ āpajjati, api ca kho lomavedhaviddho saį¹vijjati saį¹vegaį¹ āpajjati: Furthermore, one fine thoroughbred isnā€™t moved to act when it sees the shadow of the goad, but only when its hairs are struck, thinking:

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, cattārome bhadrā purisājānÄ«yā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. In the same way, these four fine thoroughbred people are found in the world.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco bhadro purisājānÄ«yo suį¹‡Äti: One fine thoroughbred person hears about

ā€˜amukasmiį¹ nāma gāme vā nigame vā itthÄ« vā puriso vā dukkhito vā kālaį¹…kato vāā€™ti. the suffering or death of a woman or man in such and such village or town.

So tena saį¹vijjati, saį¹vegaį¹ āpajjati. Theyā€™re moved to act by this,

Saį¹viggo yoniso padahati. and strive effectively.

Pahitatto kāyena ceva paramasaccaį¹ sacchikaroti, paƱƱāya ca ativijjha passati. Applying themselves, they directly realize the ultimate truth, and see it with penetrating wisdom.

Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, bhadro assājānÄ«yo patodacchāyaį¹ disvā saį¹vijjati saį¹vegaį¹ āpajjati; This person is like the fine thoroughbred

tathÅ«pamāhaį¹, bhikkhave, imaį¹ bhadraį¹ purisājānÄ«yaį¹ vadāmi. thatā€™s shaken when it sees the shadow of the goad.

ā€˜amukasmiį¹ nāma gāme vā nigame vā itthÄ« vā puriso vā dukkhito vā kālaį¹…kato vāā€™ti, nāpi sāmaį¹ passati itthiį¹ vā purisaį¹ vā dukkhitaį¹ vā kālaį¹…kataį¹ vā, nāpissa Ʊāti vā sālohito vā dukkhito vā hoti kālaį¹…kato vā, api ca kho sāmaƱƱeva phuį¹­į¹­ho hoti sārÄ«rikāhi vedanāhi dukkhāhi tibbāhi kharāhi kaį¹­ukāhi asātāhi amanāpāhi pāį¹‡aharāhi. the suffering or death of a woman or man in such and such village or town, nor do they see it themselves, nor does it happen to their own relative or family member, but they themselves are afflicted with physical painā€”sharp, severe, acute, unpleasant, disagreeable, and life-threatening.

So tena saį¹vijjati, saį¹vegaį¹ āpajjati. Theyā€™re moved to act by this,

Saį¹viggo yoniso padahati. and strive effectively.
