Paį¹­hamanānākaraį¹‡asutta Difference (1st)

ā€œCattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. ā€œMendicants, these four people are found in the world.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaį¹ savicāraį¹ vivekajaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Take a person who, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected.

So tadassādeti, taį¹ nikāmeti, tena ca vittiį¹ āpajjati. They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying.

Tattha į¹­hito tadadhimutto tabbahulavihārÄ« aparihÄ«no kālaį¹ kurumāno brahmakāyikānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. If they abide in that, are committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die theyā€™re reborn in the company of the gods of the Divinityā€™s host.

Brahmakāyikānaį¹, bhikkhave, devānaį¹ kappo āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹. The lifespan of the gods of the Divinityā€™s host is one eon.

Tattha puthujjano yāvatāyukaį¹ į¹­hatvā yāvatakaį¹ tesaį¹ devānaį¹ āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ taį¹ sabbaį¹ khepetvā nirayampi gacchati tiracchānayonimpi gacchati pettivisayampi gacchati. An ordinary person stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then they go to hell or the animal realm or the ghost realm.

Bhagavato pana sāvako tattha yāvatāyukaį¹ į¹­hatvā yāvatakaį¹ tesaį¹ devānaį¹ āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ taį¹ sabbaį¹ khepetvā tasmiį¹yeva bhave parinibbāyati. But a disciple of the Buddha stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then theyā€™re extinguished in that very life.

Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, viseso ayaį¹ adhippayāso idaį¹ nānākaraį¹‡aį¹ sutavato ariyasāvakassa assutavatā puthujjanena, yadidaį¹ gatiyā upapattiyā sati. This is the difference between a learned noble disciple and an unlearned ordinary person, that is, when there is a place of rebirth.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo vitakkavicārānaį¹ vÅ«pasamā ajjhattaį¹ sampasādanaį¹ cetaso ekodibhāvaį¹ avitakkaį¹ avicāraį¹ samādhijaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Furthermore, take a person who, as the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, enters and remains in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.

So tadassādeti, taį¹ nikāmeti, tena ca vittiį¹ āpajjati. They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying.

Tattha į¹­hito tadadhimutto tabbahulavihārÄ« aparihÄ«no kālaį¹ kurumāno ābhassarānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. If they abide in that, are committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die theyā€™re reborn in the company of the gods of streaming radiance.

Ābhassarānaį¹, bhikkhave, devānaį¹ dve kappā āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹. The lifespan of the gods of streaming radiance is two eons.

Tattha puthujjano yāvatāyukaį¹ į¹­hatvā yāvatakaį¹ tesaį¹ devānaį¹ āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ taį¹ sabbaį¹ khepetvā nirayampi gacchati tiracchānayonimpi gacchati pettivisayampi gacchati. An ordinary person stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then they go to hell or the animal realm or the ghost realm.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo pÄ«tiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajāno sukhaƱca kāyena paį¹­isaį¹vedeti yaį¹ taį¹ ariyā ācikkhanti: ā€˜upekkhako satimā sukhavihārÄ«ā€™ti tatiyaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Furthermore, take a person who, with the fading away of rapture, enters and remains in the third absorption, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, ā€˜Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.ā€™

So tadassādeti, taį¹ nikāmeti, tena ca vittiį¹ āpajjati. They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying.

Subhakiį¹‡hānaį¹, bhikkhave, devānaį¹ cattāro kappā āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹. The lifespan of the gods of universal beauty is four eons.

Tattha puthujjano yāvatāyukaį¹ į¹­hatvā yāvatakaį¹ tesaį¹ devānaį¹ āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ taį¹ sabbaį¹ khepetvā nirayampi gacchati tiracchānayonimpi gacchati pettivisayampi gacchati. Furthermore, take a person who, giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, enters and remains in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.

So tadassādeti, taį¹ nikāmeti, tena ca vittiį¹ āpajjati. They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying.

Tattha į¹­hito tadadhimutto tabbahulavihārÄ« aparihÄ«no kālaį¹ kurumāno vehapphalānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. If they abide in that, are committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die theyā€™re reborn in the company of the gods of abundant fruit.

Vehapphalānaį¹, bhikkhave, devānaį¹ paƱca kappasatāni āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹. The lifespan of the gods of abundant fruit is five hundred eons.

Tattha puthujjano yāvatāyukaį¹ į¹­hatvā yāvatakaį¹ tesaį¹ devānaį¹ āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ taį¹ sabbaį¹ khepetvā nirayampi gacchati tiracchānayonimpi gacchati pettivisayampi gacchati. An ordinary person stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then they go to hell or the animal realm or the ghost realm.
