āCattÄrome, bhikkhave, puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. āMendicants, these four people are found in the world.
Katame cattÄro? What four?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo vivicceva kÄmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaį¹ savicÄraį¹ vivekajaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ paį¹hamaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Take a person who, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected.
So tadassÄdeti, taį¹ nikÄmeti, tena ca vittiį¹ Äpajjati. They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying.
Tattha į¹hito tadadhimutto tabbahulavihÄrÄ« aparihÄ«no kÄlaį¹ kurumÄno brahmakÄyikÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. If they abide in that, are committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die theyāre reborn in the company of the gods of the Divinityās host.
BrahmakÄyikÄnaį¹, bhikkhave, devÄnaį¹ kappo ÄyuppamÄį¹aį¹. The lifespan of the gods of the Divinityās host is one eon.
Tattha puthujjano yÄvatÄyukaį¹ į¹hatvÄ yÄvatakaį¹ tesaį¹ devÄnaį¹ ÄyuppamÄį¹aį¹ taį¹ sabbaį¹ khepetvÄ nirayampi gacchati tiracchÄnayonimpi gacchati pettivisayampi gacchati. An ordinary person stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then they go to hell or the animal realm or the ghost realm.
Bhagavato pana sÄvako tattha yÄvatÄyukaį¹ į¹hatvÄ yÄvatakaį¹ tesaį¹ devÄnaį¹ ÄyuppamÄį¹aį¹ taį¹ sabbaį¹ khepetvÄ tasmiį¹yeva bhave parinibbÄyati. But a disciple of the Buddha stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then theyāre extinguished in that very life.
Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, viseso ayaį¹ adhippayÄso idaį¹ nÄnÄkaraį¹aį¹ sutavato ariyasÄvakassa assutavatÄ puthujjanena, yadidaį¹ gatiyÄ upapattiyÄ sati. This is the difference between a learned noble disciple and an unlearned ordinary person, that is, when there is a place of rebirth.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo vitakkavicÄrÄnaį¹ vÅ«pasamÄ ajjhattaį¹ sampasÄdanaį¹ cetaso ekodibhÄvaį¹ avitakkaį¹ avicÄraį¹ samÄdhijaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Furthermore, take a person who, as the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, enters and remains in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.
So tadassÄdeti, taį¹ nikÄmeti, tena ca vittiį¹ Äpajjati. They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying.

Furthermore, take a person who, with the fading away of rapture, enters and remains in the third absorption, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, āEquanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.ā

VehapphalÄnaį¹, bhikkhave, devÄnaį¹ paƱca kappasatÄni ÄyuppamÄį¹aį¹. The lifespan of the gods of abundant fruit is five hundred eons.
