Nikaį¹į¹hasutta Retreat
āCattÄrome, bhikkhave, puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. āMendicants, these four people are found in the world.
Katame cattÄro? What four?
Nikaį¹į¹hakÄyo anikaį¹į¹hacitto, One is on retreat in body, but not mind;
anikaį¹į¹hakÄyo nikaį¹į¹hacitto, one is on retreat in mind, but not body;
anikaį¹į¹hakÄyo ca anikaį¹į¹hacitto ca, one is on retreat in neither body nor mind; and
nikaį¹į¹hakÄyo ca nikaį¹į¹hacitto ca. one is on retreat in both body and mind.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, puggalo nikaį¹į¹hakÄyo hoti anikaį¹į¹hacitto? And how is a person on retreat in body, but not mind?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo araƱƱavanapatthÄni pantÄni senÄsanÄni paį¹isevati. Itās when a person frequents remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.
So tattha kÄmavitakkampi vitakketi byÄpÄdavitakkampi vitakketi vihiį¹sÄvitakkampi vitakketi. But they think sensual, malicious, and cruel thoughts.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo nikaį¹į¹hakÄyo hoti anikaį¹į¹hacitto. Thatās how a person is on retreat in body, but not mind.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, puggalo anikaį¹į¹hakÄyo hoti nikaį¹į¹hacitto? And how is a person on retreat in mind, but not body?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo naheva kho araƱƱavanapatthÄni pantÄni senÄsanÄni paį¹isevati. Itās when a person doesnāt frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.
So tattha nekkhammavitakkampi vitakketi abyÄpÄdavitakkampi vitakketi avihiį¹sÄvitakkampi vitakketi. But they think thoughts of renunciation, good will, and harmlessness.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo anikaį¹į¹hakÄyo hoti nikaį¹į¹hacitto. Thatās how a person is on retreat in mind, but not body.
