ParihÄnisutta Decline
Tatra kho ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There SÄriputta addressed the mendicants:
āÄvuso bhikkhaveāti. āReverends, mendicants!ā
āÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato sÄriputtassa paccassosuį¹. āReverend,ā they replied.
ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto etadavoca: SÄriputta said this:
āYo hi koci, Ävuso, bhikkhu vÄ bhikkhunÄ« vÄ cattÄro dhamme attani samanupassati, niį¹į¹hamettha gantabbaį¹: āReverends, any monk or nun who sees four things inside themselves should conclude:
āparihÄyÄmi kusalehi dhammehiā. āMy skillful qualities are declining.
ParihÄnametaį¹ vuttaį¹ bhagavatÄ. For this is what the Buddha calls decline.ā
Katame cattÄro? What four?
RÄgavepullattaį¹, dosavepullattaį¹, mohavepullattaį¹, gambhÄ«resu kho panassa į¹hÄnÄį¹hÄnesu paƱƱÄcakkhu na kamati. They have much greed, much hate, and much delusion; and their wisdom eye doesnāt go into the many deep matters.
Yo hi koci, Ävuso, bhikkhu vÄ bhikkhunÄ« vÄ ime cattÄro dhamme attani samanupassati, niį¹į¹hamettha gantabbaį¹: Any monk or nun who sees these four things inside themselves should conclude:
āparihÄyÄmi kusalehi dhammehiā. āMy skillful qualities are declining.
ParihÄnametaį¹ vuttaį¹ bhagavatÄ. For this is what the Buddha calls decline.ā
