Parihānisutta Decline

Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi: There Sāriputta addressed the mendicants:

ā€œÄvuso bhikkhaveā€ti. ā€œReverends, mendicants!ā€

ā€œÄ€vusoā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuį¹. ā€œReverend,ā€ they replied.

Āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca: Sāriputta said this:

ā€œYo hi koci, āvuso, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunÄ« vā cattāro dhamme attani samanupassati, niį¹­į¹­hamettha gantabbaį¹: ā€œReverends, any monk or nun who sees four things inside themselves should conclude:

ā€˜parihāyāmi kusalehi dhammehiā€™. ā€˜My skillful qualities are declining.

Parihānametaį¹ vuttaį¹ bhagavatā. For this is what the Buddha calls decline.ā€™

Katame cattāro? What four?

Rāgavepullattaį¹, dosavepullattaį¹, mohavepullattaį¹, gambhÄ«resu kho panassa į¹­hānāį¹­hānesu paƱƱācakkhu na kamati. They have much greed, much hate, and much delusion; and their wisdom eye doesnā€™t go into the many deep matters.

Yo hi koci, āvuso, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunÄ« vā ime cattāro dhamme attani samanupassati, niį¹­į¹­hamettha gantabbaį¹: Any monk or nun who sees these four things inside themselves should conclude:

ā€˜parihāyāmi kusalehi dhammehiā€™. ā€˜My skillful qualities are declining.
