Ubhayasutta Both

ā€œCatasso imā, bhikkhave, paį¹­ipadā. ā€œMendicants, there are four ways of practice.

Katamā catasso? What four?

Dukkhā paį¹­ipadā dandhābhiƱƱā, Painful practice with slow insight,

dukkhā paį¹­ipadā khippābhiƱƱā, painful practice with swift insight,

sukhā paį¹­ipadā dandhābhiƱƱā, pleasant practice with slow insight, and

sukhā paį¹­ipadā khippābhiƱƱā. pleasant practice with swift insight.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yāyaį¹ paį¹­ipadā dukkhā dandhābhiƱƱā, ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­ipadā ubhayeneva hÄ«nā akkhāyati. Yampāyaį¹ paį¹­ipadā dukkhā, imināpāyaį¹ hÄ«nā akkhāyati; yampāyaį¹ paį¹­ipadā dandhā, imināpāyaį¹ hÄ«nā akkhāyati. Of these, the painful practice with slow insight is said to be inferior in both ways: because itā€™s painful and because itā€™s slow.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­ipadā ubhayeneva hÄ«nā akkhāyati. This practice is said to be inferior in both ways.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yāyaį¹ paį¹­ipadā dukkhā khippābhiƱƱā, ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­ipadā dukkhattā hÄ«nā akkhāyati. The painful practice with swift insight is said to be inferior because itā€™s painful.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yāyaį¹ paį¹­ipadā sukhā dandhābhiƱƱā, ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­ipadā dandhattā hÄ«nā akkhāyati. The pleasant practice with slow insight is said to be inferior because itā€™s slow.

Tatra, bhikkhave, yāyaį¹ paį¹­ipadā sukhā khippābhiƱƱā, ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­ipadā ubhayeneva paį¹‡Ä«tā akkhāyati. Yampāyaį¹ paį¹­ipadā sukhā, imināpāyaį¹ paį¹‡Ä«tā akkhāyati; yampāyaį¹ paį¹­ipadā khippā, imināpāyaį¹ paį¹‡Ä«tā akkhāyati. The pleasant practice with swift insight is said to be superior in both ways: because itā€™s pleasant, and because itā€™s swift.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­ipadā ubhayeneva paį¹‡Ä«tā akkhāyati. This practice is said to be superior in both ways.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, catasso paį¹­ipadāā€ti. These are the four ways of practice.ā€
