Sasaį¹…khārasutta Extra Effort

ā€œCattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. ā€œMendicants, these four people are found in the world.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sasaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti. One person is fully extinguished in this very life by making extra effort.

Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo kāyassa bhedā sasaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti. One person is fully extinguished when the body breaks up by making extra effort.

Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme asaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti. One person is fully extinguished in this very life without making extra effort.

Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo kāyassa bhedā asaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti. One person is fully extinguished when the body breaks up without making extra effort.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, puggalo diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sasaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti? And how is a person fully extinguished in this very life by making extra effort?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asubhānupassÄ« kāye viharati, āhāre paį¹­ikÅ«lasaƱƱī, sabbaloke anabhiratisaƱƱī, sabbasaį¹…khāresu aniccānupassÄ«. Itā€™s when a mendicant meditates observing the ugliness of the body, perceives the repulsiveness of food, perceives dissatisfaction with the whole world, observes the impermanence of all conditions,

Maraį¹‡asaƱƱā kho panassa ajjhattaį¹ sÅ«paį¹­į¹­hitā hoti. and has well established the perception of their own death.

So imāni paƱca sekhabalāni upanissāya viharatiā€”They rely on these five powers of a trainee:

saddhābalaį¹, hiribalaį¹, ottappabalaį¹, vÄ«riyabalaį¹, paƱƱābalaį¹. faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom.

Tassimāni paƱcindriyāni adhimattāni pātubhavantiā€”And these five faculties manifest in them strongly:

saddhindriyaį¹, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹, satindriyaį¹, samādhindriyaį¹, paƱƱindriyaį¹. faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

So imesaį¹ paƱcannaį¹ indriyānaį¹ adhimattattā diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sasaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti. Because of the strength of the five faculties, they are fully extinguished in this very life by making extra effort.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sasaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti. Thatā€™s how a person is fully extinguished in this very life by making extra effort.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, puggalo kāyassa bhedā sasaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti? How is a person fully extinguished when the body breaks up by making extra effort?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi ā€¦peā€¦ paį¹­hamaį¹ jhānaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ dutiyaį¹ jhānaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ tatiyaį¹ jhānaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ catutthaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Itā€™s when a mendicant ā€¦ enters and remains in the first absorption ā€¦ second absorption ā€¦ third absorption ā€¦ fourth absorption ā€¦

So imāni paƱca sekhabalāni upanissāya viharatiā€”They rely on these five powers of a trainee:

saddhābalaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ paƱƱābalaį¹. faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom.
